Never would I have thought I would start writing at 73 years of age. I have thoroughly enjoyed my voyage into the written spirituality of poetry and am thankful for the opportunity.  In my seven years here I have met many new and wonderful persons. Having them accept me as a friend has been a moving experience.

Why Read Poetry Soup Poems

Blog Posted by Charles Henderson: 12/6/2016 10:22:00 PM

When I first started writing poety and blogs I was naive enough to believe that those who commented on a particular poem did so because they liked it. I commented not because a friend had written it, or a newbie, or that I was fishing for kudos on my poetry.  I commented simply because I read it and liked it.  I have always posted on the soup and will continue.   I will contrinue to comment and compliment when I feel something is noteworthy.   I welcome anyone to contact me at cghenderso@msn.com if they have a question about one of my poem, or any other reason for that matter.  Maybe where the inspiration came from, if not from just trying to think up a poem.  Some poems do seem to reach out find each of us.  Those are the ones we may be the proudest of, in my opinion.  They are the ones impired not by a contest or a challenge, but sitting alone quietly and listening.  Such a poem of mine, I titled "To all my grands, et al- - -Winkin', Blinkin', and nod.   I feel it is one of the few good poems I have and am only too glad to share it to soup members.  i'm 80 now and do not know how much longer I will be on the soup.  I am going to instruct my son to post an obit on the soup one of these days.  It has meant so much to me.  My wife and I continue to build the 'dream' home in upstate SC, closer to the 10 grands.  We both dance the shag on Friday nights weekly at a local shag club.  Shag was a dance started at Fat Harold's Rock and roll dance hall at Myrtle Beach SC back in the mid 50's -60's.  It is a southern derivation of the jitterbug, but is much slower and more suave. Fat Harold is no longer here but the shag is steadily growing.  It is a four hour drive from upstate but we will always be at a table with a cool one promptly at 8 pm.- - -waiting for the first dance.  My wife is a terrific dancer and we blend well together so it is something we love to do.  We love the hits of the 60's and 70's best, but there are still a few good hits coming out.  Well, I have said my piece and welcome any feedback.  I'm a big boy and can take it.  I love all you guys and gals here and the soup for giving us this opportunity to become friends in poetry.   Sincerely Charles Grady Henderson, Junior

Charles, great comments all, but this really speaks to me: "Those are the ones we may be the proudest of, in my opinion. They are the ones inspired not by a contest or a challenge, but sitting alone quietly and listening." -- There is much to be said for silence, listening, and contemplation. Some (perhaps more soulful?) people seem to know this at a young age, and some of the rest of us take a long time to get there. Cheers, Doug.

I read poetry and write poetry because it fills a need, It has always been a need, an expression from within..the poets I read are the ones who write poetry that touch my senses, of course I do not have the time to read every poet on PS, but I'm sure they're many more poets I could follow and try to expand to more poets from time to time

if someone as taken the time to visit one of my poems, I will go have a look at theirs, to many poems posted daily to read them all, so its nice to visit a poet who you know is on the same page taste wise, might read 3 or 4 and I can't remember a occasion when i could not find a poem that connects, I think it's a nice thing to do. good blog my friend. have a dance for me as i can't dance for toffee lol

I enjoyed the blog post, Charles. Keep up the writing...and now that I know you're "here" I'll be sure to read some of your stuff. I agree with you about certain poems reaching out to find us, rather than us ruminating on and finding them. Lastly, I grew up in Rock Hill, SC and find myself missing it these days in the frigid temperatures of AK.

I like it that you wrote this blog post, because if you hadn't, I might never have known you wrote poems. And that is also my answer to you. There are so many great poets out there, and so many on Soup, but I meet only a small group, a circle slowly growing. To me the interface of Soup is so incredibly confusing, that I have a hard time finding my way. Finding new great poets to read and talk to is a challenge for me. So yeah, I am glad for blog posts like this one, or comments on my poems from people I thus far hadn't known yet. Wishing you all the best, and love seeing you around :)
