Take your Poems from the Page to the stage

Dear Soupers:

One of the greatest joys of an artist is perhaps to see his or her work
in action. How about soup members organizing a poetry reading event in their
own region. It doesn’t matter where you originate from, it can be done with all
soup members from each territory. Let’s say for example we have two soup
members from different cities in India, those two individuals could host the
events separately if those cities are not close.

Likewise, soup members in different states (USA) could also plan and conduct their reading themselves. It doesn’t have to be a posh event, it can be done at a coffee shop, a school hall, a community center, a library, a pub or anywhere that will loan their public space for free for a few hours .
 
It’s a wonderful feeling to read your poems in front of a live audience. Last year for example, I was invited to read in front of a live audience in a theatre filled with some of the best writers and critics from a particular region and that experience was immensely rewarding. Instead of pending time behind the computer screen all day, it would be good to go out and share your work with others. Your poems can change the life of someone today, mine did and I am sure that yours can do the same.

Libraries don't work well for open mic nights around here... Eating establishments and book stores are better in St. Louis. I want to publish a book before trying to reach out again... But will get out eventually...

Carol I wasn't thinking about an open mic night. A poetry reading session is different from an open mic. In the USA it is easier to conduct a poetry reading in the library. I attend one such session in Atlanta two years ago. Furthermore, your writing style lend itself to these type of sessions. Your poems are very entertaining. Challenge yourself and go to the local community library and tell the librarian that you would like to do an impromptu reading. In five minutes you will have an audience. Test the waters and get feed backs before publication.

Great idea, but I dislike reading my own poetry and trying to make people think it is good. I would rather have someone else think that it is so good they must read it. So some poets could read other soupers' poems. The way I publicise my poetry is by writing music to it, and then my family performs the song at a local museum. Which is great, some people have been really impressed.

Well it doesn't matter what form it takes you can read or give another person to read as long as it jumps off the page.

This could work for some of our members, who live in clusters, and it would be a wonderful opportunity,....So if Soupers could plan such an event.....how great is that???! But so many Soupers are scattered in far away places...many miles from each other, so might be hard to do. But also, let us thank Drake Eszes who is offering his Blog Radio show, as an alternative, where poets can call in, read their poetry, ......so if you haven't taken a listen......please give his show a try. Watch his blogs for the next scheduled show! I know this isn't quite the same as reading on stage, but it's a good forum for sharing poetry.

Well that could be a start. Poetry readings come in different ways, it can be just a few people at a small venue or a theatre filled with over a thousand people. Once you have an audience it can work.

It would be super nice to take part in such a thing. I don't think any Soupers are from my area. I know frank is somewhere in the north of Utah. That's about it!!!

That's ok. You can start with your students. They can be your audience. You can organize it yourself.

I ventured into open mic nights but don't have the transportation to get there anymore... But I got a great response... The open mics are all way across town... Bummer!

Don't have to run across town carol. Use the library in your local community. Even for an hour you can get their attention.
