Starling Poems

The Starling

When I was small
the starlings roosted one by one
on grandma’s party line wire
	(like jittery black clothespins)
to bandy their gossip back and forth
until the wire hummed
with their inanities.

By luck my slingshot found its mark.
One toppled from the wire soundlessly
like a clothespin blown loose in the wind.
The others rattled on, oblivious,
no questions asked.

It dropped straight down.
I ran

Starling

A meteor crashed into heather,
They reacted together,
Not much later that night,
A young starling took flight.

Susurration Shifts

susurration shifts

Starling Murmuration

Twisting, turning, swooping, SWIRLING
Starlings just before dusk
Forms  patterned cloud ILLUSION
Coming together as single

Thousand minds as one
Act in an instant
Who trains them all?
Who leads them all?

RUSTIC charm of birding
Brings rare joy sighting
SILENCE seems to EMANATE
In ambience of forest

SYNTHETIC life in city
Never helps to BLOSSOM
TIMELESS calm of Nature -
A price above priceless.

Starling on an Electric Power Line

Lined up
they perch in spaced formation,
ready to take fright and scatter
should a roving hawk approach too near.

I don't know why
they seem insulated from the deadly current,
or why
they make such a reckless target
for the raptors.

A cat looks at them
from a city pavement.
I do know what it is thinking.

The differing spaces between the starlings
could be musical notations.

a coat of stars 
on a shiny night you 
wear
and thrive in #'s (almost)
everywhere
Mozart taught you to sing
everything
recite poetry
and greet those
who stumbled in
you are precious
to me
yet so hated
they patent your name
for poison
and rage

now
half of what you were
your murmurations
still
smoke the sky
just not here 
this year
my dear
my darling

gleaming feathers shine
whilst the songbird sweetly sings -
a melodic tune

A Starling Storm Surprise

we
are the
gray ghost of
a giant storm
with
hands like a hurricane
in a 
starling swarm surprise

Murmerations

Squeaks shrieks and whistling chirps
mixed with mimicry, colourful
spotted speckled iridescent darlings

Pixilated torturous waves at dusk
mesmerising murmurations escaping the day 
starlings, self-pursued sardines of the sky  
flowing contorting distorting, fly.

The Starling of Spring With Shakespearean Subplot

Plucked from Shakespeare 
and plopped in Central Park,
Sturnus vulgaris, the mimic,
conquered New York.

It made it there,
You know it made it everywhere;

The continental stage stolen.

And here on my fence amid this tragedy
To be   blessed with a modicum of bliss;

The sparkling spring songster
with his treasured chest pumping
my missing birds   song list.

A Starling Pecker

Parked at the lake where we surely were't strangers
A Starling momma thought her babies were in danger
She flew at my head
Pecking away to my dread
Till I ran in terror trying to save my old brainer

The Starling Song

One day a Starling did speak with his brother
He twittering and whistled ten minutes or more
On and on about preening and bees, 
About sly cats that hide in the trees

How he lost brown bread by the blue porch 
'twas a small piece he said, seriously, not much
The wind pushed and pulled at one feather
Life was

Little starling,

   perched in your woody heights,

   kneading thy wet wings,

   and gloating with song -----

Then flying off to some far shore:

   Is it envy that I feel?
