The orchestra plays the music
that majestically swells
the violins, flute and piccolo
harmoniously scream the song at the top,
and the soul gets fed,
and feels full.

Always nourishing;
Sustenance, you turn it up;
Music is soul food.

Premium Member The Big Easy

The Big Easy called to me
Packed my bag and went to see
New Orleans a place to eat
Took a stroll down Bourbon Street.

Summer night a sound of jazz
I'm bopping along full of sass
Hearing syncopated blues
Music followed to rendezvous.

Have a date to eat soul food
Hungry and thirsty in the mood
The Big Easy helped me unwind
Shrimp gumbo tasting mighty fine.

Premium Member Soul Food For Thought

Never to be spent, only saved,
Its question has mirrored the mind of man.
As a celestial battle seeks ownership,
Measuring qualities the best it can.

It appears to be contested throughout
A lifetime, no matter length or reach.
With victories rarely mentioned, yet
Lessons remain for those to teach.

Often times, it may be lost to a void
Or chaos, where it may be crippled if found.
Where the wounds must be tended to,
And that soul can rebound.

Some days music is the only thing in life that makes sense.
...if it doesn't speak to your soul you simply change the song.

Soul Food

The taste of passion drips down a paintbrush,
Stroke after stroke with emotion in each drop.
A story told without words,
Is one to be ravished.
Can you feel it?
The change of heart within each pigment.
Fighting between love and hate,
Deciphering the symbols against a stigma.
Do not question creativity.
Question what makes you creative,
Then chase it.

At Sadie's Soul Food Grill

Otis was once a monk
who took no vows, was
free to leave the abbey
and eventually he did.
I met him over chicken wings
at Sadie's Soul Food Grill.

For almost 20 years
every spring and summer
Otis labored in the fields
raising vegetables
and crops of every kind.

In fall and winter he
would gather leaves and
plow the snow, wheel
ancient monks up and down
the endless silent halls.
He loved his work
because he liked to help
anyone in need.

I asked Otis why he left.
He said because at first
he thought life was a burp
somewhere in eternity.
He still believes that but
wants to hear the burp
before he’s in eternity.

Otis likes the chicken wings
at Sadie’s Soul Food Grill,
especially the real hot ones.
He ate chicken at the abbey
but nothing like the wings
at Sadie's Soul Food Grill.
A real treat before eternity.

Soul Food

Swallowing starlight, thirsting
on ether that roars through
the cosmos as fine, icy fire.

Nibbling moon-dust, gobbling
comets that streak through the
heavens from heaven knows where.

Digesting mysteries older than time,
inhaling the dew, grateful for tastes
that are forever ancient and new.

Morning Soul Food

I thank you, God,
For morning tea
and butter buns,
oven fresh.

They satisfy
my body, Lord,
But I am more
than flesh.

Fill me with
Your Holy Spirit,
and quench my
thirsty Soul,

with nectar from
Your fruit tree, Lord,
My heart's Your
hallow bowl.
