Hearteater
With that waiting line
I'm not surprised you're greedy,
On fresh hearts feasting;
Planning a different fate,
Mine won't be served on a plate...

Untitled
A quiver of longing, the heart perched
on its topmost rung, bracing itself
for yet another
fall.

Thud.

No flailing of wings,
no shrill cry ringing in the air.

Why am I not surprised?
Is my plea for a fair
today that unfair?...

Premium Member What Was That
What was that?
My husband and I look at each other
It looked like a hybrid
Part raccoon, part cat
Possibly weasel
It ran right out in front of us
I look up Ringtail Weasel
There is such an animal
It is nocturnal, rarely found in the daytime
We are not surprised to see it is also called Ringtail cat...

Premium Member Darla gets her nose pierced
When Darla got a paper cut she went ballistic.
Reacted the way others acted if their arm was gnawed off.
If someone bumped her she complained for years and years.
Every scrape, scratch, and poke was a huge deal.
When she came home with her nose pierced we were incredulous.
It’s a cat, said grandma. I am not surprised....

Premium Member I Wish I Had Freckles
I wish I had freckles the eight-year-old said.
These are age spots, replied her great-grandmother.
Then I want them, the child replied. Because I like them.
Her parents were not surprised at her instant freckles.
Remember, the mommy said, “this was my grandma too.”
“And I have heard the stories,” said Daddy. “Now I believe.”...

Flowers Never Die
When flowers become like rain
I am on full alert
I like flowers
Draped around my neck
Wet from exhaustion
When flowers become like wood
Made into chopsticks
I am not surprised
When nuns
Eat with their hands
Remembering the flowers
Plucked from the fields
When they were young
When flowers become like salt
Rubbed into the wounds of soldiers
I am shaking
I am a flower child...

Premium Member It Rained
It rained this morning...
but I am not surprised
myself arising a bit
on the cloudy side --

by the afternoon
my mind a blaze
of clear activity --

the sun was high
and bright --

to the contrary,
the day before
I arose quite chipper --

yet it rained all day
such a windy, soggy
dripper

the night even more fierce
not a star of light

what were you thinking!?...

Didn'T You
exaggerated feelings
exaggerated thoughts
love songs inside my head
a mind that thinks too much
I thought I had a hold
on your desperado heart
silly me for thinking
your heart could be roped
why am I surprised
that you had to let go
I can't say that you
didn't always tell me so
I am not surprised
that you'd let me slip away
didn't you, didn't you always
tell me it would be this way...

Mesmerized :: the Relaxed Sonnet
Yes, we spoke till midnight shared heartfelt thought. Your glance watched with delight; there's no rethought. Realize you aright, I feel your thought. Your gesture speaks feelings I realize. Your look, I know meaning I'm not surprised. No, I'm not concealing felt mesmerized. Even when you're silent, I constantly get your communication instantly. ~X~X~X~

Premium Member She Lived Her Life Her Way
She lived her life her way, he told us.
We stared at him, not understanding.
Because of our upbringing, we lived our life our way too.
Didn’t everybody?

She was your great grandmother, and she was fiercely independent.
We did not understand.
Wasn’t everybody?

She divorced two men before she was twenty, he told us.
We were not surprised.
This is common right?

Apparently not in 1934....

Premium Member what two rives are the longest in the world
When I asked the fifth grade students to guess
What two rivers are the longest in the world
I was not surprised with Missouri and Mississippi.
Many are not global thinkers.
Most had not heard of the Nile or the Amazon.

Both of these are over four thousand miles long.
Where the Amazon ends is uncertain.
But they are within fifty miles of being equal lengths.
I cannot imagine seeing either, can you?...

Premium Member Bets On Christmas Cow
Christmas Cow wanted to be a reindeer for sure.
He had a special hat made, and he made his heart pure.
His neighbors thought it was hilarious and funny.
His friends bet each other some real money,

That Christmas Cow would become a snowman too.
They were not surprised when he ordered a holiday shoe.
He ended up living in it with a sweet cow with a pretty moo.
Their next bet on Christmas Cow’s actions is due....

A No Good Man
I hope you're happy now
that you got what you want.
She kicked him to the curb.
You picked him up thinking
you picked up something good.
You have yet to find out.

She left him alone
cause he was no good.
He gave her no help.
He gave her trouble.
So she let him go.

He maybe cute,
but he's no good.
He has money,
but not a job.

When he breaks
your heart, be
not surprised.

He's a
no good

man....

Drumstick and Thigh
Young Tim goes to Zaire
to write his dissertation
in African Studies.

While there he meets and
marries a beautiful librarian
darker than he is, flies her

home to meet the family.
Tim's father asks his mother
if she knew about Margot.

Mother says she didn’t
but she’s not surprised.
On Thanksgiving Day

Tim likes the dark meat,
the biggest and meatiest
drumstick and thigh.

Patience
When you have patience...
You listen...
And reflect...

I am a master of patience...
And all I do is listen...

So I understand you...

The rest...
I imagine in my mind...
I imagine everything...

So there is no shock...
For I already thought it...

And I can do this because...
I am on the outside...
As I always am...

I am on the outside of the world...
But I think of everything...
So I am not surprised by anything....

Hidden Feelings
Even though I carry a smile on my face
I still know in my heart
that your love cant be replaced
the sorrowness that I still feel inside
I dont think will ever subside
the emptiness I had when you left me alone
made me feel I couldnt live on my own
all the memories of us
still swim beneath my skin
All the pain inside
still stays within
I still fell the way I did 6 months ago
And im not surprised that after all this time
I still cant let you go....

Premium Member A Daydreamer From Way Back
I daydream in my car
driving on auto pilot

Not surprised when I reach
work, as it happens daily.

I am in the zone of
complete and utter unknowing

Scary when you realize
I am behind the wheel of a car

I am a daydreamer from way back.
It started in third grade

When an overly harsh teacher
shut me down almost completely

Daydreaming saved me daily in her class,
for she thought I was listening so I was not punished as often as the others....

Bothered By the Why
Why are you prepared to go to war with your neighbor?
Yet not with the gangs who control the street,
Your children walk down.

Why can you not smell the corruption?
That fouls the air in town,
When you smell your neighbor's apple pie and choose to reject it.

Why do you spread gossip?
And fake news,
Instead of inviting neighbors' to barbecues.

Why am I not surprised any more?
At anything you do.
I just hope your neighbor has more sense than you....

curiosity
I wonder why the air is not seen?
Is it too naughty or is it too clean?
I wonder why the water seems blue?
Is it still choosing which colour will do?
I wonder why I can't fly?
Did I do something wrong or did I lie?
I wonder and wonder where is my tail?
Mom assures me though it'll come soon by mail!
I wonder why the rainbow is bent?
Is it too old or is it too hight to mend!
Questions don't end do they?
And I'm not surprised curiosity ends with a why....

False Pretences
Life is full of surprizes, we are not surprised at all;

to church on a sunny summer morn at Petertide,

to be shocked that the great and good of the borough

were there for the annual mayor's service, all well and good

except expecting the annual service for that most obstreperous of fishers,

Peter the coward turned faulty Prince of the Apostles - and his rival-friend Paul.

What does it matter? Their purpose: to shock the world to save it - then as now....

An Aspirin For My Pain
I am not suprised you came to visit
I am not surprised It hurts when I see you
maybe it is you who missed me
or maybe it was me who called you.
but one thing I am sure
I do NOT want to know you.

This small piece is going to help me
This small piece every day.
One week, no longer than that
One week, and you will be less than a cat.

One every eight and one every four,
I swear I did it before.
This time I tell you
I am not that old
You are just a cold....
