Bobcat
peaked above
the tall snowbank
Then, it slowly walked
sat in the street
looked around,
as it
left

He pulled a rabbit from his hat
That suddenly changed into a cat
That sunk claws in his face
He was given a taste
Of a fight with a large bobcat

a twig snap

bobcat
treetops glint
in sunlight -
jackrabbit leaps

The bobcat is following gram.
She senses lit eyes that won’t scram.
There’s feet on the path,
A gun with grand’s wrath.
The bobcat on wall, he can’t scram.

Forty five pounds of TNT, quick and lean
Hunts at night, seldom seen in the day, can freeze like a deer
Without notice, screams, jumps and goes up your spine

I do not know?
Looking intently at me with lime green eyes
Those ears perked, listening for any tiny sound
Under the rug trying to play innocent
Gray with black markings like a bobcat
Tiny button nose adorned by whiskers
Gracing that smiling mouth, heart capturing

I do not know?
There was an old Witch with a beauty-mole
On her nose that looked like an ugly troll.
Spook, her hungry cat,
Like a bobcat sat,
Tail wagged, lost self-control and left a hole.

Eli snuggled up to his sweet winter snow pet
Squishing Mr. Bobcat as close as he could get
This day is damp said Bob, my fur is all wet
Mama won’t let you in the house though, that is my bet.
We can stay here and snuggle, so don’t you fret.
You are my favorite person, my best friend, my pet.

it came from my left
my hair stood on end
a woman being murdered?
raped and murdered?
my heart was beating faster now
the woods have never looked this dark
I am horrified
mountain lion my friend tells me later
no I argue
It sounded like a woman being raped and murdered
exactly he said, smiling

Other people’s nightmares and night terrors do not interest me
Or persuade, coax or encourage me to have my own.
I refuse to acknowledge their existence.
Others tell me cryptic tales, sharing morbid woes.
I slumber as peacefully as a newborn colt
Dreaming of the good life
A bobcat’s scream changes me forever

Heart stopping scream.
Permeates the woods.
A woman being murdered.
I grab my flashlight.
I wouldn’t do that if I were you.
I glare at my friend.
A woman is being killed.
I am going to save her.
That was a bobcat, she says.
I come right back to the deck.
There are no more screams
But yips of coyotes.

On a back porch the feline sat
watching a busy sewer rat
while overhead a flying bat
diplomat of their habitat
observing preying pussycat
had to get even tit-for-tat
squealing he warned that sewer rat
it took off like a scared bobcat!

Unsuspecting and unafraid
Bless your naivety!
Dashing from out your home in the woods
Just to sit by me.
You cannot know what I am;
The race I represent.
Has not badger told you, warned you?
Rock-ledged bobcat, down-bent!
Or are there some among us
I, one such fortunate
Spilling or not, nibblings like secrets
Innate wildness placate?

Dragging back to the den
Leg and hip injured
Torn ears and skin
Mother coyote slowly moves
Being attacked by the bobcat
Left her wounded body and soul
Now she has to see that her young
Are loved, nutured, trained, and fed
Seeing her in such a state
Knowing that she needed help
But how can one help a wild one
Especially one with young

BONES
Arise, dinner served down the hill
Game hen, T-bone, short rib with dill
Supper awaits pan-sear or grill
By scent by sight, capture thy thrill
Bobcat, coyotes enjoy at will
Partake of a feast beneath night sky
Prime rib, lamb chop, bone-in ribeye
Bon Appetit yummy meat pie
Silent hunters hawk owl can’t be shy
Fearless falcon eagles soaring high

She took a bit of this and a bit of that
Things from the junkyard of Uncle Matt
Put them together and made a giant thing
A lynx, I think said my Cousin Zing
It was a lynx, or a puma or possibly a bobcat.
I was intrigued by this sculpture from junkyard Matt
Zing, I said, it is amazing, unique, clever and phat!
It is amazing that she created it out of this and that.

An odd bobcat
my father was
looked more like
a Siamese asleep
in his recliner
till a nightmare
from the war
woke him and
he sat up snarling
whiskers aflame
teeth brilliant
diamonds
glistening as
we kids sat there
quietly hoping
he would
fall asleep again
because we had met
the Siamese
and didn’t want to
meet the bobcat

Blank verse
There is a summer
come along on windtide
weaving through the reeds
return like an old friend
Bags and beachtowels in the trunk
there is a summer
port town postcards always
too little room to tell
Winding round a mountain road
down through Bobcat Pass again
there is a summer
waving for the camera
Once then in the cool night
you took my hand
as we watched the birds fly home
there is a summer gone

I do not know?
With a whirr and grind
Slowly creeps up inching along
Then the banging sounds
The "Bobcat" reaches his paw
Out as far as it can
Pulling back black plastic
Discarded cardboard boxes
Tidbits of vegetables, file thirteen coupons
Last nights scrapes
Then the male voices
Men in banana yellow shirts
Permanently stained
Men who come once or twice weekly
Creeping along
Getting the tough smelly job done..

My feet are freezing in this forest tonight. I wish I had worn my extra socks. Through the tree there is a light. A scream pierces the air. Hair stands on end on my neck. A werewolf? A bobcat? Mountain lion? I begin to walk faster, expecting to die in boots with freezing feet.
scream pierces the night
mountain lion or brave bobcat
my hair stands on end

Under the silvery light of the moon,
I heard the cry of a distant loon.
Closer by I detected the bark,
Of a lone coyote out in the dark.
The wild bobcat out on the prowl,
Stirred up the screeching of a midnight owl.
While crickets sang a happy refrain,
I heard the whistle of a nearby train.
Competing with the urgent siren whine,
Was the soft humming of the telephone lines.
And the trickling of a sleepy stream,
Lulled me fast into a friendly dream.

Leopard had a secret, he did not dare tell
His power animal was not an easy sell
Feathers and fur do not often mix
He was in a pickle, a jam, a little fix.
His power animal did not have fur.
Or polka dots, and it did not purr.
Pheasant was the power animal he had.
Something dainty, tiny, not big or bad.
Lion had a fierce monster named Ike.
Panther had a bull dog named Spike.
Bear had a bobcat named Devil Mistake.
Leopard’s pheasant was named quiet Jake.

A PITCH BLACK NIGHT WITH A LOUD SILENCE AROUND ME EXACERBATES MY FEARS
WAITING FOR DAWN TO SET, I CRINGE MY TEETH AND UNDERGO INVOLUNTARY SHAKING AND A COLD SWEAT. TREPIDATION RADIATES DEEP DOWN TO MY CORE.
PARANOIA AND DELUSION SYNCHRONIZE AND EXPLODE INTO A PANIC ATTACK.
A SKY WITHOUT STARS, A FOREST, WITHOUT TREES.
A HUMAN BEING WITH JUST HIS SHADOW AS A COMPANION
MY IMAGINATION RUNS WILD LIKE A BOBCAT DEEP IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH ONLY ONE OBJECTIVE, TO SURVIVE....

Bio
You really haven’t lived life fully
Until you’ve raced down a mountain
In the rain
On a muddy, slippery trail
In a Bobcat side-by-side utility vehicle
With a twenty foot long section of twelve inch culvert
Teetering precariously on the vehicle
Trying to hold it under one arm
While attempting to steer with the other
So as to keep the Man
With the quarter million dollar excavator
From sitting around
Waiting on you
At an hourly rate
Higher than you ever dreamed of making.
