Rule Of Thumb Poems | Examples

Action And Reaction

Isaac Newton is said to have stated,
'For every action,
or force in nature,
there is an equal and opposite reaction.'
And the proof in his pudding is...
If I exert myself
in search of who knows what I want to be,
it also brings to bear
an equal and opposite influence on me.
As, by doing so,
my own headwind I create,
which inhibits my progress,
and the harder I push, or fixate,
the more resistance I set up,
so to speak,
and the farther away I am
from finding whatever it is I seek.
Indubitably, it's a rule of thumb,
the more forward I go,
all the further behind I become,
but is it better to do nothing at all,
than beat my head against
an invisible brick wall?

Premium Member ANCESTORS ARE IMPORTANT

If you want to know why our ancestors are important…
here’s a little rule of thumb…

It’s difficult to know where we’re going…
If we don’t know who we came from.

Political truth is often perceived to come,
from the politicians lips the story last passed.
But If lips were moving there is a rule of thumb,
that he must be lying or just feeling outclassed.

Most Politicians are guilty of pollution,
they contaminate the air with unwanted sound.
I’d suggest term limits as starting solution,
giving another a chance for sheep to confound.

Dumb and Stupid

Relationships can be good.
They can be also bad.
You hope they would.
Sometimes not be sad.

Don't let anyone call you dumb.
They don't know the rule of thumb.
If you are hurting and trying.
You need let it go; crying.

If a friend calls you a name.
Then you may feel like doing the same.
People can be mean.
They seem to be full of green. (Envy)

If someone calls you dumb or stupid.
Maybe they ought to call cupid.
They ought to know when things end bad.
They should be a support for you and not let you be sad.

Premium Member Not Always So

Just as it’s not always so
First thought is best thought
There’s always exceptions to the rule
Or to put it directly,
Rules are made to be broken,
Or more charitably
Rules are by nature fluid
Suited to conditions which are always
By definition conditional.

And so my rule of thumb for poetry
Less is more
Jostles with the other three axioms of creation;
Less is less
More is less
More is more
Always needing to be considered
In the broader context
Of what is being said
And to whom.

Premium Member Living In Denial

There's no denying
We hear too much lying
In the World today

Too much cheating
And repeating
Everything we say

Too much backchat
And idle chit chat
Going all around.

Too much talk
And not much action
Abounds

Too much taking.
Too little giving
It seems a rule of thumb.

Too much heartache
And Destruction
Making all feel numb

Too much trouble
Cauldrons bubble
Making another spell

Trouble brewing
While we are spewing
Do we now live in HELL?

He goes with ego
Many go with him
Those without ego,
Patience is wearing thin

He is a traitor,
It is clear to see
He is a dictator
His favourite word is ME

He isn't concerned
About others, only self
How did he become President
Why? Of course, for pelf.

Power and greed
Is all that interests him
When is he going to pay
For the betrayal and sin,

He has caused, without a qualm,
When will he be punished?
For all the heartbreak and harm
He has instigated,

And delegated to others,
Who are not in a position to refuse
To fight their fellow brothers,
In a WORLD WAR,

How much farther can he go?
Before he understands the word NO
And has to succumb,
To the rule of thumb.

And pay for his misdeeds,
Before it is too late.
How can anyone be in Power for so long?
While doing wrong,

For goodness sake, please GO.
And take your EGO with you,
I am afraid you will GROW
Stronger like a virus

And it would be outrageous,
If we all become contagious.

I'm not too fond of the world today,
Too much rubbish and takeaway,
Nothing today is built to last,
Like the solid stone buildings of the past,
Comfortable homes with easy chairs
Axminster carpets on the stairs.
Wireless that was always on
Sadly this is almost gone.

Sterile apartments are now in fashion,
Chrome fittings and tiles are a passion,
For most who need a place to stay.
Comfortable homes have had their day.

Things today are not made to last,
Craftsmanship is a thing of the past.
There does not seem to be a rule of thumb,
For anything or anyone.
Solidarity is what we need,
No quicker fixes because of greed.
We all need to build a solid b oat,
That will unite us and keep us afloat.

Premium Member Normally Rule of Thumb

Thinking can overtax the active mind
Thoughts flood the strata of the cerebrum,
Where’s vital information one should find
Cannot locate a fact, one feels so dumb,
Something that is normally rule of thumb.
Moments before on the tip of the tongue,
Much we have forgotten, since we were young
To be forgetful is so frustrating,
Suggesting needed synapses are sprung
Age can be so darn debilitating.

Premium Member Think First - Speak Later

The less said the best said, or so I have heard,
Is often the best rule of thumb,
For trouble is wrought more often than not,
By the unguarded human tongue.

For 'tis easier by far to quell the unsaid,
Than to mend a wound opened by candor;
And senseless indeed to ignore the soul's need,
For assurance and welcome not slander.

So take into account your own feelings Friend,
And listen to things that you say.
How would you feel were these things said to you,
Your actions, perchance be repaid?

Premium Member Desire

I'm like a Vulcan when you aren't around -
logical, distant, evaluating you
like a product with my friends,
the consumer with a lifetime of buying.

But near you I'm a prisoner
of some consciousness independent of thought,
like a fever or the dreamer,
with the merest semblance of control.

You are light and loose, hair like Spanish moss
and skin like cedar resin, all laughter and agonizing beauty.
The way you lean across the table I only think of kissing you.

I'm sure at times it must show,
like a red stain on a white dress
or some inconvenient ********..

You have some license on me,
a key to a place in me I keep hidden and close,
you fit some interior template of desire.

What good is freedom if I can't tell you?
Oh, The ragged vagaries of loves games.

1000 emotions and I am deserted
to silence by some rule of thumb -
by a faltering consumer confidence
or some feeling of inward nakedness -
when all I want in the world is an open kiss
or to give you an intimate scented something...

Premium Member Number One: Indian Summer

Tis truly an Indian summer here,
It is because we live in India,
Like in America, tis different there,
Their late September, it is trivia,
Tis September everywhere, not just them,
Be the same, October heat, rule of thumb.

Premium Member 1981, In Collaboration With Ricky Nelson

Ricky Nelson, T-shirt, and khaki pants,
Four a.m. check-in, big wigs are my job,
With a grain of salt, 'it's my life I snub,
A chosen degree, and the good lord grants,

He asked what type of room would I give them,
Wife had a t-shirt that dropped to her knees,
"The Bell Tower, our bridal suite, sign please,"
His band doubled-up, as a rule of thumb,

I would learn a year later, they broke up,
At the time, they both were very charming,
And she's sister to actor Mark Harmon,
By the way, that suite was 1k a pop!

Rick and his band would die in a plane crash, (1985)
And his wife of that time died in New Mex. (2018)

Lady of Darkness

Lady of Darkness

She sat in the dark in an overstuffed chair
Though the stuff in the seat was no longer there
A bottle of vodka and a bottle of rum
A chair in the darkness was her rule of thumb
As the shadows grew darker, the bottles grew lighter
As she tried to lighten the darkness inside her
Till only the chair and the bottles remain
With the lady of darkness no longer in pain
