I Miss Jags: a Jaguar's Lament

On the first day of school, I long for its end, 
Yearning for my Jag family, my heart's dear friend.
The food, a tragic horror, but health's their decree, 
A social kid silenced, a shadow of me.

The theater, my love, now comedy's the song, 
No musical notes, just laughter all along.
Kids in the hallways, screams like

In the Rainy Northwest

peak moss season
even the rolling stone
gathers it

Of Shadows and Winds

clouds shadow grounds and grasses
as cold winds deny spring

life pauses and passes
as I work along the side of a road

pavement must be sculpted
fields wait to become

trees waiting to bud
raise tangled arms

but a touch of sun
hints something more

a gust of wind carries birdsong
melody without words

a love of the land

Spring In the Great Northwest

It's Spring in The Great Northwest,
And the weather can put you to test.
Those cold northern breezes,
Bring melts and then freezes,
And soon your health ain't the best.

We're tired of the snow and the ice.
Huddled down in a den just like mice.
With Christmas long passed,
If we could see some grass,
And a Robin or two would be nice.

The Bat

My first encounter with a brown bat was at Long Lake as a kid. It was in the dark of night. I was in a rowboat with a friend guiding the boat. I was watching the water intently with a flashlight, and holding a fish net above my head, ready to swoop down on bullfrogs.

We traded fields of cotton bolls for snows
so deep they swallowed house and car alike,
so cold a breath transformed to crystal ice,
so strong the air became as still as death.
A fur-lined boot or glove spared flimsy guard
as fingers, toes and nose began to pulse
in pain and foster hope to somehow dodge
