Today Dhara feels shelter-less
And Goddess of Learning, let down,
Learned, peerless men, patron-less,

Note: King Munj and king Bhoj ruled kingdom of Malwa in Central India during 10th-11th CE. Their capital was Dhara, today’s Dhar. Sanskrit scholar Kalidas happened during the rule of Bhoj. Both were learned men. Once, king Bhoj wanted to know how people would feel when he is no more. So, on an expedition he was declared dead. When asked, poet Kalidas wrote this shloka on dead king. What happens when the king returns? See the next verse. The transliteration of Sanskrit text is as under:
Adya Dhara nir aadhaaraa nir aalambaa sarasvatee |
Panditaam khanditaam sarve bhoja-raaje divam gate || Kalidas ||
Man of merit knows merit,
No one else devoid of it.
The mighty knows what might is,
No one else who from fight flees.
Koel knows spring’s worth, not crows,
Tusk lion’s might, mouse ne’er knows.

Poet’s note: Sanskrit has thousands of verses of wisdom called Subhashhitam. Only a man of merit knows what is merit, a strong man knows what is strength. Cuckoo knows what spring is. Elephant knows lion’s strength, not mouse. The transliteration of the Sanskrit verse follows:
Gunee gunam vetti na vetti nir-gunah,
balee balam vetti na vetti nir-balah |
Pikah vasantasya gunam na vaayasah,
karee cha simhasya balam na mooshhakah ||
Birds fruitless trees forsake,
Swans and cranes leave dried lake,
Courtesans scarce to wealth-less cling,
Counsellors leave a corrupt king,
Honey bees flee from lifeless flower,
Beasts forsake a forest on fire,
Motive-dunk men in self are sunk,
In this world, who to whom is dear?

How not to steal from a mamba
That came to your house
To check on your children
How a little snake mamba
Comes in like robin hood
Asking children
Have you eaten anything good we can share
Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim
And maybe a little portion of food
Left for him everyday
Even in your thoughts
And blessing from God
The Little mamba moves away
Singing dancing
