I flew to Chicago last Friday night
my great uncle was turning a hundred.
The plan was to fly-in Friday, party Saturday,
and fly out Sunday. No missed school.

The air felt colder in Chicago, the wind really bit,
and the sun seemed to be at an odd angle.
We stopped by the beach of a lake so large
that there were waves breaking on the beach.
The party was great. EVERYONE was there.

But then there was the choreography of luck.
I woke up sick Sunday morning - really sick -
deathly sick, you know the drill, weak
like my muscles were falling off my bones.
At 8am Charles called - I should have met him.
I couldn’t lift the phone - I poked the button.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I told him before falling back asleep.
KLUNK I heard my hotel room door open, it was Charles.
He came in looking like he expected a threat.

I could only open my eyes for a second.
“I’ve GOT it,” I told him, (not knowing what ‘it’ was)
“Get out, save yourself.”
So went Sunday and Monday - I didn’t eat or drink.
Charles canceled flights, extended hotel room bookings,
and the car rental. Finally, Tuesday morning, he said,
“I think you’d better try.” So somehow, we flew and we made it.

There was a famous football player across the aisle from me
He’s retired now, like all of my heroes - Brady, Manning.
He played for the Ravens, I’d hated the ravens, I’d hated him,
the way you hate someone just because they’re great
but they play for the other team. I didn’t tell him, and sadly,
I didn’t warn him that I might just throw up on him (I was masked).
Charles bought me one of those horseshoe pillows and I passed out.

Before I knew it I was back in the dorm.
Being sick and helpless, away from the comforts of home is the worst.
I’ll have to remember that - someday - If I’m a doctor.

Premium Member Funchal's Star

It was in the eighties, a winter day in Funchal,
the capital of Madeira, when a woman gave birth.
She was an anonymous, struggling woman
sailing the seas of poverty, with three other
children to feed.
At first, she hesitated to have this little baby,
the fourth to come, because the family salary
did not cover more. Her husband, a good man,
who fought in a war in Africa for years,
and, in a different way, still fighting with himself,
he was of no help to the family at that time.
Finally, she took a decision as a mum,
to give light to her new baby.

After that moment, nothing changed for years,
until this baby was a little boy.
Then, he started to show signs of being special.
His intelligence, the way he faced life,
his unique behaviour.
He started thinking about turning a football
into his livelihood to have a better future
for himself and his family, and he certainly did.
As a teenager, his father couldn´t help him much,
but he also liked football, so, that fed the boy´s dreams.
He had a hard time in Lisbon at the beginning
of his career at the football school. He also suffered
from bullying, something that helped him to increase
his aims even more.
However, he also had friends
whom he remembers with great affection.

When he was eighteen,
he spread his wings to fly higher. He went to England,
where his dream started to come true.
After that, the Funchal´s star
showed that light that became brighter and brighter.
He was the best football player in the world;
Portugal, England, Spain, Italy, and keep on going.
A little particle coming from a poor Portuguese area
that reached many hearts.
I, personally don´t like football too much,
but I´m really enchanted about stories
that have so much to teach us.
And not only that, but this well-known sportsperson
is also a well-known friend of those who need him.
He really jumped and sorted out hard obstacles
through his life, to achieve the goal he set
for himself as a child.
What a great lesson taught!,
splendid, admirable lady-mum,
outstanding, unbeatable son.
He was born as a shining star,
whose light illuminates many paths to follow,
as a professional sportsman and as a born fighter from humility.

Childhood's Dream

At every turn in time, I wish to live the best dream
The best wish everyone could have
That caress the precious grace per luck
Which colors achievement
And can be counted on as reinforcement cum hard work
Which pave ways, wings soar peacefully
That bottoms sit back to reminisce,
Counting blessings worthy of thanksgiving

Many are dreams you once had in gleam
The ones that would've continue to live
But with the dragging of time, you chuck
Thinking when will you be old enough to have its fulfilment
Despite all the prayers you build like a bulwark

Just as the sun fuels the moon's speed
And its light determines its brightness
The florals get human lives' breath feed
And beautifies environment and its forthrightness
Dreams cage plans towards fulfilment
And bless efforts for passions many rewards
Goal is the root of focus connecting achievement
Aiming high at globally recognized awards

I once wish to be a doctor
For the sake of saving lives
But one thing I admired most
Is the smart look of the uniform
On the ones I have come across

I can't figure out how I become a proctor
Many are lazy students I practically forgives
Who have over the years been undiagnosed
And abandoned for the higher institution to reform
How will they be able to bear the cross?

At a point in life, I wanna become a football player
Either I get to feature or not, no cease payment
The profession I referred to as "money making machine"
More than any other on weekly basis
To get life going well visiting places

At another point, I wanna be a bricklayer
Who has never been exposed to an underpayment
But they spend much on colchicine
To make sure the system is active
Then watch to avoid being addictive

Maradona

Maradona, great football player, was an inspiration to many
He gave an exemplary example of perfection in action
How concentration can achieve milestones
How short height doesn't matter
How it can, in fact, be used to your benefit

But he also taught the world not just talent,
good moral values and habits are important for lasting success
They give a life of peace and happiness

It is essential to develop talents in children
but they should also be made mentally strong
to handle all aspects of life
be it success or failure
Parents should ensure kids have no bad habits that can bring ruin.

We can we learn from lives of great people
Many set an example of what should be done
and what should not be done.

FICTIONAL POEM FOR CONTEST

I sailed through my pregnancy without a problem
We’d painted the nursery in pale blue
                          I was having
                            A little boy

I'd stroke my swollen belly every time he kicked
we joked he'd be a great football player
tragically he’d never kick a ball
no one knows why he stopped moving on my due date

The doctors could not save my child
Why was my baby born sleeping?

                          My precious son
                            You never cried

Corridors of Horror

The poor boy's got a temper, Rottweiler style
With cigarette-loving parents and a mind full of worry
When the lunch bell rings, he lets out a chuckle
"They'll never mess with me again and they'll be afraid"
Locker room tussles turned to punches and blood
Black eyes became his signature makeup style
Snapped his innocence like a freshly fallen twig
Nobody would crash through the persona he'd build

Glock in his art project, ammunition in pockets
A trench coat blanketed his skinny, pale body
When the shots rang out in cafe, his peers rushed
To the closets, the small classrooms, the temporary havens
Blood's on the young man's hands, but it isn't his
Belongs to the peer who told him boys can't cry
To the girl who rejected his invitation to prom
To the football player who always managed to outshine him
To the harshest, crankiest teachers
And even that of the fellow man who clothed his back during hardship.

And with a touch of his gun to the roof of his mouth
A quick demise met the boy who chose violence
While his name appeared in legislation and internet forums
The ones of his victims turned into bright monuments

For the athlete
For the young girl
For the educators
For the bully
And lastly, for the best friend

The boy who chose to kill won't feel so godly
But the victims, they live in our hearts like deities.

When Blackness Turns Into Light

When blackness turns into light

Society could not deny
what we saw
with our own two eyes.

We saw blackness
turn into light
soulful stars
illuminating
white nights.

Jackie was a pioneer
his love lifted us
higher and higher
his black voice
shining bright in
the white night
his acceptance there
was no denying.

James Brown led the way
when there still
was segregation
blacks and whites
in Baptist churches
but in separate
congregations

His voice was strong
his blackness shone
his body contorted
in rhythmic gyrations
his voice was heard
when people listened
and saw as useful
this racial integration.

His strength and stamina
on the stage
and his voice made you
want to get up and dance
those who saw him
knew that maybe
racial unity had a chance.

Then came Marvin
yes that Marvin Gaye
he blazed a new trail
a new way of thinking
never encountered before,
music with a social conscience
that stirred a whole nation
to even question the war.

Then there was Sly and his
band mates the Family Stone
they were unique and special
mixing races together musically
but they were all alone

Then came Stevie
yes he was a wonder
his talent as a musician
there was simply no doubt,
his music resounded
a message of peace and
harmony was what it
was about.

Then came Michael
and Prince at the
very same time
two forces of black nature
twisting and turning their
blackness into light.
Music of healing the world
and the crying of doves
transfixed hateful gazes
into havens of love.

And don't forget
Luther Vandross and
Teddy Pendergrass too,
their songs of love
helped conceive a
million children or two.

If you never lived
at a time like I did,
growing up with
Soul music's beginnings
it would be like being a
football player who
never experienced
winning.

Now they're mostly all gone
but their music still lives on
we were witnesses
to the legends
in the making.
Now the message carries on
hope is never really gone
it's still there
for the taking.

John Madden RIP

As an offensive linesman forms profession,
Complimenting Raiders pro football coach,
Relating coaching and playing no question,
At every game, there's a diverse approach,
After his heyday years on the field, to cam,
A front-page kinda guy, sporting the news,
His behind the cam persona clearly amuse,
Hectic tit-for-tat lifelike catchphrases bam,
Commercials, sportscasting purged midlife,
I personally knew him in his career highlife,
He knows the playbook, immortalized rock,
'Twas a subject of intrigue, animated stock,
Ere Constitution, the Word in his interviews,
It's nineteen seventy-seven Raiders streak,
Twelve consecutive victories Super Bowler,
Oakland Airport Hilton, the Raiders quarter,
As Hospitality Aficionado I smile and greet,
But now, twelve-year his calling as a coach,
Making Raiders fans proud, as all encroach,
We pay homage to the man giant than men,
A football player, coach, TV persona, friend.

Premium Member Nothing Compares To What You Give

Did you ever want something so bad
you can taste it?
But nothing compares to what God is giving you and will give you
His gift is so awesome
and will just surprise you
I have given up on wanting something
Because I realize that nothing I want can compare to what He gives
when He gives it
God You are so awesome
And I don't know what to say about You
You surprise me at times and always
God who is like You?
Nobody
And You stay the same in my book
And yet I can never figure You out
Why is that God?
I can never hold You up to some standards
You have broken them all
Bursting through them like a football player going for that final touchdown
Except yours are not final
It's indefinite
God how can I say enough things about You?
I am not going to even try
Just know that some are thinking of You and that's including Me
Bless You God
for being a good trooper and always understand
I know I can be hard to live with
I'm definitely not easy to work with
But You got it God
And that's a plus for You
in Your favor
But are they all in Your favor? ha
