From My Bookshelves
Spiritual dragons – the ones that kill
reside and wait impatiently for seeking fingers.
Hobbits eat breakfast mushrooms
in a leather-bound shire.
Small books on overly large religions.
Poets and their random works
all in a row.
The shelves are long but not lengthy
I lack the space for unnecessary reading.
I write now,
I write inside invisible books
they open and shut every day like mouths.
Few read the words that tumble out,
but the news from my bookshelf
is encouraging.
I need to categorize and order,
not alphabetically ranked by authors
or subjects
but by how much I have yet to comprehend
and need to read again.

Its Because We Are Frogs
Its Because We are Frogs
hobbits live in that cottage Jasper told Tily
they are miniature gnomes and totally silly
friends of my big brother frog eating Willie.
I want to meet them said curious Tily.
the two frogs knocked on the door – not once but twice.
GO AWAY! yelled a strong voice, and not very nice.
They are crazy, Jasper said. Hobbits are you know.
Tily did not care, stood her ground; refusing to go.
It’s because we are frogs, they are prejudiced too.
Come on in! Yelled a hobbit. Come consume some stew.
I think they are wonderful, and now don’t you too?
Lily asked Jasper, as they plopped him into their stew.

Mid-Summer Night Dream - Concluded
Part One
https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/mid-summer_night_dream_1482320
Concluded
Elves, dwarves, mini giants, and hobbits all performed.
But last was Fili as he strutted to the middle of the glen.
Secretly clutching his alexandrite lode, he flew
Straight up ten feet with a view for all to see.
Fireflies flew erratically around him, a ghostly shine.
As Fili moved his clutched hand, he turned.
Somersaulted, spun and returned to his standing stance.
Below the people of the glen clapped in awe.
But now Fili was worried, how was he to descend
And thus receive his well merited prize?
It was the River-maid who rescued him, as she flew
And whispered in his ear. Change the lode to the left hand
She whispered, giving him a luscious kiss.
Soon Fili landed and the Fairy Queen beckoned him.
You can take your first midnight skinny dipping and eat all
The strawberries you like so much, she graciously said.
She took his lode, put it on a crown and on his head it sat.
And now Fili, the hero, was annoyed no more.

Popping Out of Pictures
Popping out of pictures, pulling swords from stone,
Hunting with your coon dogs, shipwrecked all alone,
Rafting down the river, whitewashing a fence,
Balloons on Krakatoa, leagues under suspense,
Milo and his watchdog, Charlie’s ticket’s gold,
Meg and Charles go tessering, Lost Boys, never old,
Wizards, dwarves, and hobbits, James’ giant fruit,
Wilbur, Fern, and Charlotte, Belle’s enchanted brute,
Heartbreak with a yearling, a big old yellow dog,
Friends Mole and Rat and Toad, islands, treasure, grog,
Gardens full of secrets, the clever family Swiss:
Glorious great stories, just too good to miss.
Books promote imagination, candy for the mind,
Afternoons spent on the page leave the world behind.
Reading with my grandkids, adventure tales galore,
And when they finish all of these, I know of plenty more.

Between the Lines
"And if my private universe scans right, // So does the verse of galaxies divine ..." - from the poem "Pale Fire" by Vladimir Nabokov.
In Wonderland, with Alice I would walk
and speak with Cheshire Cats and one March Hare,
then through the looking glass, a Jabberwock,
as Tweedledum and Tweedledee would stare.
With Lucy in her diamond-studded sky,
newspaper taxis and cellophane flowers,
I found myself sharing marshmallow pie
with rocking horse people for countless hours.
In Narnia, I met the Pevensies
a Faun and Lion past the wardrobe door.
In Middle Earth I learned of talking trees,
and hobbits, dwarves, and elves - brave to the core.
Between the lines of lyrics, prose and verse
flew rockets in my private universe.

Middle Earth Blues
I've got the Middle Earth Blues
The imaginary world is threatened by forces of night
It will take the strength of brave men, wizards, hobbits elves and men to set things right
Life rumbles on in the lands of the Shire
as hobbits rest their bones beside the fire
Dragons stull terrify men
Doesn't seem the troubles will ever end
I've got the Middle Earth blues
Will light come forth from a darkening sky?
One sees the depredations of Sauron and can only ask why
The king of men must assume the throne
Face fire with love
of his own
We can see that the Shadow has great power
and soon will come the momentous hour
Where evil will fall into a pit
Where elves, hobbits, dwarves and men '
Can rejoice in getting rid of it
My Middle Earth blues are fading away
I'll visit that land again one of these days

Magic Worlds
Old books of tasty treasures
give my life, so much pleasure.
Building worlds so bright and deep,
help me to read myself to sleep.
I’ve sailed with pirates, the seven seas;
cooked from books, with smashing recipes.
Dante’s, “Inferno”, took me to Hades;
was present when knights, received accolades.
I’ve fought alongside of Hobbits and Elves,
as the war to save Middle Earth swelled.
In Narnia, I actually met, King Peter;
no moment was actually any sweeter.
I shadowed Alice, through the looking glass;
as the Mad Hatter’s madness, slowly passed.
Oh the weathered pages I’ve perused;
so many books, so well-used.

Elf
I'm just an Elf, am I the only one
Living in the forest, by the river ,in the sun
Stomping and a romping tryn to have a little fun
But am I the only one, left to dance here in the sun
Oh wait here they all come
The mushrooms are ripe,on this wild and Elfish night
The Hobbits are setting the mood
The Unicorns dancing, the Centaurs are prancing
Theres magic alive in the wood, yes our magics alive in the wood
I am Elf and Elf I am,whisper when you speak, never holler at the Meek
Beware of the magic in the meadows, and the whispers in the wind
And when you happen on the Unicorn, your search for solace will finally end

Looney Tune
Max is mad at Molly
Samantha’s sore at Seth
Freida’s freaking out at Frodo
While Hobbits hold their breath
Jack jokes about poor Jill
She hits him with her pail
Humpty cracks open Dumpty
For drinking all his ale
Mickey Mouse and Minnie
They both make quite a scene
Playful Pluto gave her paw
and stroked her jumping bean
Rub is furious with Dub Dub
She has another man in his tub
His bubble has been bursted
So he scrubs Dub with a club
Cats in cradles cows and moons
Forks running away with spoons
Coyote catches the Road Runner
In the end we’re all Looney Tunes
Nothing makes us happy
Sticks and stones me oh my
Kryptonic grade destruction
Broken Superman can’t fly
The Beatles Battled Yoko Ono
Because she broke up the band
They sang ‘Give Peace a Chance”
a dream they didn’t understand
So I walk down to the River
John the Baptist please begin
Separate me from human nature
Cause I’m tired of our sin

The Stone
walking through a barren path
this led to a pathway through the woods
searching through the grass
I suddenly came across a stone
Black with gold around the edge
Glowing from every side
Below there lead to an inhabited world
filled with green moss and ivy
it was there that what was believed
trolls and hobbits would live
a tiny village was there
what happened was a violent storn appeared
killing every single one except the stone
The only thing that was left was the stone
It stands as a monument
a barren stone
a loving stone
Others view the stone
as a protective barrier
guarding the entrance of Hell,
many folks have heard screams & demonic sounds out of the stone
either way the stone still stands
as a vivid testament to all of nature in which to behold

The Puddle
A scent filled the air as clouds wafted in, they say it's petrichor
and quickly all the children raced in the open door.
A deluge fell, loud and pitter pattering on the shingles
as their clothes were soaked and crinkled.
Then softly it dwindled down to rain drop droplets
each warm and teasing calling children to act as hobbits
Puddles strewn huge on the driveway where they could play
and the sun shown as the children went outside to wade.
They danced to shake the stillness of the trapped cupped water
when the storm clouds opened and were rain was caught there.
An illusionary ghost image shivered on then in the surface
swimming ants and wiggle worms tried escaping with purpose
it caught their eyes and they gathered sticks to pull them out
the boys so brave, the girls raising quite a shout.
They rescued each and set them in the dirt
as the girls demanded none be hurt.
They returned then to their three ring circus,
plucking stones along the water's surface
Upon their shoulders a thousand drops came
but they gladly played all day in puddled rain.

The Hobbit On My Bookshelf
When my parents
returned from England
They brought me
a leather bound copy of the Hobbit
Now it sits proudly
on my bookshelf
What a fantastic story!
Full of hobbits, dwarves, goblins
wizards, orcs . giant spiders,
elves and Beornings
Imagination is ones'
key to a joyous life
The book has inspired a
multitude of poets, writers,
and yes - dreamers
As for myself I feel it
is an example of wonder
which is something we
are all in need of
in these dark and troubled times
So, friends - re - read the Hobbit
rejoin Bilbo and company
and take joy
from the existence
of Middle Earth

Many Mighty Men
There had been many mighty men
Found fighting over and over again
And you had fallen into a trance
From sword sounds and a long lance.
Clanged together all of them seemed to do
And then the next thing that you knew
Bodies around a big field were spread
Blood flowed forth and all were dead.
Much mourning and tears had taken place
As they flowed down each one's face
Others bodies were badly burned and seared
As well as hair on head and even beard.
At the end were smiles and a sweet kiss;
None of the movie would I want to miss
And maybe again next time I can see
The whole entire moving movie on DVD.

Adventures In Literature
I wish I lived in middle earth,
With wizards and hobbits and elves.
Just give me a sword and a quest to fulfill,
Like the heroes in the books on my shelves.
I wish I had a dragon to slay,
A hideous fire-breathing beast.
Or a princess to save from an odious fiend,
Or a tall ship to sail nor’ by nor’ east.
I wish I had a battle to fight,
With archers and pikemen and knights.
Or be a sultan with a harem of shapely young maids,
In a garden of earthly delights.
I wish I had a magical lamp,
Or a walnut that would turn things to gold.
Or live in a castle with portcullis and moat,
In a kingdom a thousand years old.
I wish I had a windmill to tilt,
Or a brave army of champions to lead.
But alas modern life affords nothing like this,
So I curl up with a good book and read.
