Outside The Empty Mug

the night’s wildlife stampedes through the crosswalk.
penguins dressed in short black skirts and white tops.
an Irish River Dance of black boots cross by the lights
startle the onlookers from the comfort of their cars.
hard to distinguish any individual from the rest.

a uniform that ignites a father’s spark,
not the kind they ignite on the bar-walk.

There was a time when the child was the center of the circle. The elders sang her name into the morning, braided her hair with stories, fed her with hands that had known hunger. She was carried across rivers of doubt, through storms of becoming, and placed gently at the edge of her own path.

glued
to electronic devices 
designed to foster
connectedness, 
yet the yawning gulf 
between relationships
w   i   d   e   n
as a result. 
with technology overuse,
far too many become
increasingly isolated.
with lips pressed 
against cell phones,
fingertips
tap-dancing
on keyboards
as minutes 
elongate to hours;
we grow oblivious 
to the world around us: 
ringing phones,
ticking clocks,

In shadows cast by waning light,
A love once vivid, now takes flight.
Our candle that once burned so bright,
Now stings of a cold, harsh night.

I see the distance in your eyes,

By constraint and definition
are they so outlined
in the pockets of feckless charity
so circumscribed
and life be ruled by gutless fear

I would connect and you would respond, 
somehow knowing, tactile instinct, 
it was me on the line. 

At the dial tone my heart cut beats, 
breath suspended, smothered chords
