Spring in Your Eyes
Spring in your eyes –
I feel it there,
the way they smile.
Like winter's heavy cloak,
the days of stress,
simply erased.
I fall in love every spring.
primavera –
the sound,
my hearts favourite word.
Flowers unfurl,
days stretch long and bright,
the sizzle of barbecue,
and your birthday light.
Woman's Day,
I carry blooms to Mom,
her smile, a sunbeam warm.
You also bring flowers to me,
and my heart

Names, dates, birthdays
They don't know my name.
I keep it hidden between the folds of my skirt. They told me I had to wear it but they don't like that they can't see my legs anymore. I keep it hidden in the bows holding my pigtails together.
They don't know my name.
I'm my father's daughter, my brother's

BIRTHDAYS
What do you know about birthdays?
A cake and warm wishes?
Different gifts wrapped with cards?
Or a lonely day that proves—
That proves a year has sunk,
And marks a new beginning—
Maybe for something better,
Or just a quiet Monday morning.
After a rough weekend of fun,
And bills paid worth a month,
With friends who came just for fun—
Or just a grey

Birthdays
Birthdays were always shared.
Two cakes sat mid-table,
‘Happy Birthday’ was sung
with two names instead of one.
I did not like being a twin,
having a sister the same age,
always being labeled more
as a composite, having
a shared identity, a part
instead of being a whole.
I felt as if I was diluted.
I did not like the

Birthdays are forever
Every year
A new number emerges
and my body feels
the tightness
or is it the tightness
of my clothes
as I enjoy
too much birthday celebration?

chicago
I flew to Chicago last Friday night
my great uncle was turning a hundred.
The plan was to fly-in Friday, party Saturday,
and fly out Sunday. No missed school.
The air felt colder in Chicago, the wind really bit,
and the sun seemed to be at an odd angle.
We stopped by the beach of a lake so large
that there were

Let The Lilies And The Roses Flourish
For crying out loud, the flowers are gorgeous,
Fresh, happy, young, alive, and vivacious.
Regrettably, we, humans, cut their lives short,
From time to time, from events to events.
For God’s sake, let the flowers live like the monuments,
Let them enjoy a long life, like the statues in the court.
Almost every event, like birthdays, weddings and anniversaries,
Is the end

Birthdays
I've lived through rain and sleet and snow,
but where did all my birthdays go?
Behind the stool? Behind the chair?
I've looked all over. They ain't there!
When I was young time moved so slow,
yet now I wonder, "Where'd it go?"
I won't be sad or shed a tear.
I'll celebrate the one this year!
I've been alive a

BIRTHDAYS IN HEAVEN
Do they celebrate birthdays in heaven?
Or do they even care anymore?
Are there birthday cakes handed out at the pearly gates?
Do the angels know the words to “Happy Birthday?”
Or do they simply strum their golden harps and hum?
I don’t know.
Maybe.
Who would know the answer?
The Pope might know.
Though I’ve never heard the question addressed at Mass.
I

Birthdays Are Such Fun
Yes, Birthdays are such fun, for you get something good and something not so good. Let's just say the something not so good is a health issue. My is Sciatica. Ouch. I made 79. The something good is I won a scratchoff prize of thirty dollars and the money has rolled in from there. Smile.

How Many Birthdays
How many birthdays
I need to celebrate
to finally experience puberty?
I feel like I never grew up
except having growth spurts
and that time once a month
How many birthdays
I need to celebrate
to finally become a woman?
will take ten more, twenty more
thirty more, forty more
or maybe even fifty more
only God knows how long
before I go down in history
as the world's

Forgetting Birthdays
Couplets On
Forgetting Birthdays
Miracle Man
3/12/2023
Another year came and went,
leaving me not broke, just badly bent.
Year’s speed by so fast, lordy-lordy.
and someone special just turned forty.
Seems I forget her birthday on most years,
she always laughs, I shed virtual tears.
I hope my forgetting you won’t besmirch,
my reputation with those we know at church.
Some say that forgetfulness is born
