SPRING TIME UNDER VISIBLE WAY
Radiantly making headway
To carpet the hills with deep green
And sprinkle beauty across land

A BEE COMES DANCING EAGERLY
From midst of its

Birds by the River

I think it’s a cormorant
Spreading its wings,
Just waiting to see what
This afternoon brings.

It sits on a log on
The riverbed’s bank,
Its beak poking into
Its chest, neck and flank.

I’m on a bench watching
The bird do its thing
And wond’ring how long
It will wait to take wing.

It has no awareness
That I’m even here
And doesn’t display
Any interest or fear.

A pigeon,

white birds leave

rotting mango skins,
envy festers in the heat-
white birds rise and leave.

Where Have All the Birds Gone

Some say the summer sun,
drove them to the jagged peaks,
where they pressed their feet in snow,
and froze, defeated, swallowed by silence.

Empty skies above,
Hollow fields below—
Who will recall their vanished songs?
Who will cradle their echoes?

Others recall their beaks filled,
with plastics from tainted fields,
like cacti bristling through sand
choking the voices that once soured.

Some saw a trembling mirage.

Borderless

Sunlight 
doesn't care 
about fences.

A child laughs 
somewhere 
beyond the wall,
could be anywhere, 
could be anyone’s.

At the market,
hands count money
in different languages
but tomatoes 
taste the same.

Birds build nests
in barbed wire, 
using what they find.

Planes cross
overhead 
carrying people home 
to places 
that look different 
but feel familiar.

We are all
walking 
under the 
same sky.

Free Birds

Some folks travel all over the earth, 
looking here and there for beautiful birds,
searching the planet for all its worth,
describing with pictures and with words,
the creatures that are so free.

But, on the dream planet that I hail from,
It's people that are watched by birds like me.
Though we throw them nary a crumb,
because we won't upset

Charise Collects Puppies and Birds

Puppies and birds, they were Clarise’s go-to’s.
She always had her eyes out, she never did snooze.
Fishing them out of crevices, crannies and old boats.
She never brought home llamas, donkeys or goats.

Puppies and birds, she collected faster than most.
I have sixty-two robins, she said in way of a boast.
Her blue glasses were always full of dribbles

but I fear I'm subjugated
by this horrible disease. 

I pick the poets, 
she loves me not. 
And I fear I cast my love
into oceans naught.

and haunting death.
The screaming is so real now- 
when will I seek my last breath?

Flying Is For The Birds

If all goes well
airlines will sell
seats by the pound
the less you weigh
the less you pay
to fly the world around
and yet
if a commercial Russian airliner jet
unfortunately
crashed into the sea
would there be
Aeroflotsam on the ocean
fragmented and floating free?

It's a riddle
inside a mystery
wrapped in an enema
from 1939 Soviet Union history.
