Sand Dollar Dreams

It's quiet here - quiet in a way that catches me off guard. The tranquility is almost tangible, something I can touch and hold and wrap around myself. I can hear the pulse of faraway waves, the faint hum of the wind, the nonsensical call of distant seagulls. I can hear my own heartbeat, pounding along with the waves.

As I kick off my sandals, my spirit steps out of my body, leaving behind the material baggage of city life. The sand is soggy beneath my feet and I know my footprints will disappear when the sea rises, as if I were never here at all.

It's low tide, that magical time when the sea recedes to reveal the ocean floor. Grooves of sand catch pockets of water that are half-buried mirrors, reflecting pale blue sky and slices of violet sunlight that glitter like chipped diamond.

a vocal seagull
descends toward liquid skies –
reflections ripple

At low tide, a second beach emerges, stretching all the way across the bay to the opposite shore. I walk slowly, tasting salt on the breeze as it runs invisible fingers through my hair. Strands sweep across my face, catching in my eyelashes before fluttering free once more.

The beach is a dream catcher, snagging small treasures when the sea withdraws. And I am a child again, fascinated by the hermit crab retreating into his shell as I approach. I spot the dimpled surface of an urchin’s shell peeking out from wrinkled sand. Other shells are scattered across the beach, some upside down, exposing smooth, pearly souls.

a tiny starfish
drifts beneath placid water –
lost constellation

When I find a sand dollar, my breath catches. It’s perfectly whole, with smooth, rounded edges and clean, ivory skin. It’s heavy and light all at once, the flawless design at its center subtle and brilliant, like a delicate floral tattoo. How many hours had I spent here as a child, searching for this transitory coin?

My eyes fill with unexpected tears as my vision wavers behind distorted pools of grief. I’m half-blind until I blink, releasing salty rivers down my cheeks. Even then, my sight is murky.

My tears taste like the ocean and I think, suddenly: Whose tears fill the sea?

Premium Member Calm

Calm is the silt beneath the waves
The measured heartbeat of the brave
It is the fragile petal born
From gardens of pernicious thorns
A velvety cadence under
The jagged footfalls of thunder
The pearlescent aura you breathe
From centers of calamity

Calm is elusive murmurs heard
Where sharp cacophony is stirred
Into harsh, unrelenting drums
As order wavers and succumbs
When my soul, snagged in turmoil
Stretches towards a turquoise soil
And life's timing lands out of reach
You'll find me on a forlorn beach

Premium Member The Beloved's Quilt

Listen
you who seek the secret of existence
your life is a thread in the Beloved's grand design.
Each moment a stitch each breath a color divine.

Do you see
how rain and sun kiss the earth?
Like morning dew they are one in the eyes of the Friend.
Embrace both
for in their unity duality ends.

You are the pulse of a seed sprouting through the stone.
In your veins flows the ancient wisdom of the soil.
In love's alchemy the seeker becomes the sought.

Feel how the wind of spirit shapes you
now bending like a reed now standing as a cypress.
In surrender find the strength that never wavers.

The heart's fire burns away all that is not love.
Desire, like wild winds, seeks its way to the sacred fire
in consuming they become the light they seek.

Each thread of your being sings the Beloved's name.
Listen closely can you hear the melody of oneness?
In that song
you'll find your true existence.

The fabric of your days shimmers with divine light:
Golden Joy. Silver Sorrow... all are His gifts.
In accepting all
you become... His perfect reflection.

O lover do not ask why some paths are sharp as thorns
and others soft as the dawn's first breath.
The Master Weaver's wisdom surpasses all understanding.

Let yourself dissolve in love's infinite sea.
You are both the wave and the ocean's depths.
In annihilation, find your eternal completion...

Beloved you are the quilt and the quilter
the song and the singer,
the dance and the dancer.
In this realization all separation ceases.

Now step into the garden of the heart—
where every seed sprouts with the faces of our Friends.
Here in agape love's transcendence
you will find your journey's end.

Fireflies

It's so dark outside, my eyes can't distinguish where sand meets water. Somehow, dusk has come and gone, plunging the evening into darkness.

But even as my eyes yield to this opaque absence of light, my other senses heighten. I can hear the crash of waves as they abuse the shoreline, sending foaming water up the beach in icy streams. I'm lulled by the sound of polished pebbles colliding like marbles as they recede with the waves. I can feel the sea's cool mist against my face, taste its salt on my lips. The scent of seaweed drifts on the breeze in gentle wafts - and then, slowly, the faintest whiff of smoke.

I glance over my shoulder, where a tiny dot of light penetrates the darkness. It's a beacon on this cool night, and I walk slowly toward it, digging my toes into the soft sand with each step.

dim moonlight
peeks through thinning clouds--
fire crackles

He's still there, stoking the fire, feeding the flames until the heat is tangible. The air wavers between us like a veil - a line I want to cross. He stirs up clouds of smoke, stirring feelings within me as I watch his busy hands. I wait patiently for him to notice my approach, and when he does, my breath catches.

rainbow flames
burst from seasoned maple--
blue eyes sparkle

I watch golden light flicker across his skin, softening the lines of his face. He abandons his task, moving around the fire until he stands before me, smiling as if he knows my heart is thundering in my chest.

He waits for a painstaking moment to pass. Then he kisses me with toasted marshmallow lips, pulling me down into his lap to watch the sparks rise like fireflies into the breathless night.

Ilaw

The light is muted,
glowing ever so faintly
and I cup my hands
to shelter it from
the harsh wind...

It flickers,
it wavers,
and my heart
does a triple dive
then beats back to normal
as I see that flame
fight, become steady,
and stand up against that wind.

I've seen this happen before,
but it always tries to shine forth
with a ferocity
that can only be fueled
by love and faith...

A different gust,
another typhoon,
yet still it tries to beam...

This light amazes me
with its tenacity.
I go through life with
only a mere spark of it
in my heart
But how proud I am
to have been borne from it,
to have it with me,
burning in my soul.

This light is awe-inspiring...
with just a kiss from it
and warmth abounds,
never burning out,
rather, sharing that glow
to brighten lives.

I fear though,
for the light is muted,
glowing ever so faintly
and I cup my hands
to shelter it from
the harsh wind...

Taking deep breaths,
we search for ways
to make that flame
glow strong again,
burning as bright as before

A strike of a match
for a candle,
with its smoke weaving
its way to heaven,
to say a prayer
for that light
to keep on glowing

The wick may be short,
the wax melting faster
than we would want it to...
But the light is still there,
and that gives me hope.

Premium Member Under the Waxing Moon

The Moon is almost...

Sullen skies forewarn the frozen shroud.
Gale November winds sway bare limbed
trees, whistling in chorus with arrows of
Geese straining to steer south.

The familiar sound of the revolving lead
Goose never wavers, but for tonight.

A strange howl emanates from the current
commander, abandoning the customary
bugling, not elongated; like a hound dogs
lament, but crisp & short, a howl.

Alarm bells ring in the memory recall of my
dna...built-in decipher mechanisms fail,
all of this happening in split-seconds.
What prompted this auditory change?
what does this alternate sound signal?

As quick as I heard it this twilight fall
evening, the Geese passed, the course they
were set upon unknown, circumstances
they encountered, not of my world,
the only sure thing,

 is wonder.

Life Is So Precious And For It One Must Fight

When heart has been crushed, sorrow is all one knows
Pain becomes crushing, world delivers constant blows
Even dawn its glory, wavers and fails to shine
Grapes are withered, falling from a dying vine
Soul looks to Heaven, begs fervently for release
Even in ones sleep at night found is no sought peace
Lost into a darkened wilderness- alone
Searching for answers and away all hope has flown
There in the distance a bright beacon sends its note
Love saves the drowning, as once, an old poet wrote.

When seeking, always look towards the waiting light.
Life is so precious and for it one must fight.

Premium Member Keyboard Bullies

What's worse than a malicious master of manipulation?
Two who join together to play Pin the Tail on their prey
Continuously and clamorously... asses love to bray

Cruelty is not always physical
Some take joy in messing with the mind
Blowing in like a blustering wind
with wicked words bringing them fame
of being labeled 'Keyboard Bullies'
Isn't that a repugnant name?

There's nothing casual about the pain
their cryptic cruelty causes, nor the disdain
Odious is the stench of ogres in the game they play
Beasts who feast on innocent folks
With a guileful grin they wound with keystrokes
Shots fired from wolves in sheep's clothing
They're gnashing teeth bite with loathing

Poisoned seeds of malice they sow
cawing to anyone who listens when they crow
With a nit-picking beak or crooked finger pointing,
they appoint themselves kings and queens,
then squat on a throne by self-anointing

Pathetic fools dwelling in a state of pretense
whose level of narcissism and bullying is immense
Sharpened are their tongues and pens used as tools
Quick to throw a gauntlet upon the ground
at what they presume is weak quarry
but how speedily they bay like injured hounds
when a righteous eye looks in their direction
Intimidation is a hallmark of their imperfection

The white flag wavers are filled with ire
Waffles, covering themselves in sweet syrup talk
claiming they're the victim. What a crock!
Their feet should be held in the fire
No one should be a casualty of their cruelty
Disparaging others is a painful assault
The fault of aggressors who crave attention
Keyboard bullies causing conflict and dissension
Living in their dark world... the cyber dimension

God pours in His best ingredients
Combining hope, faith and love
With grace, peace and promise
For joy that will forever praise Him

God flows through the one who knows
His love abides in the heart and soul
Piercing the darkness with a tender light
Who whispers in silence, inspiration
Insight that invites the believer to see…
Through His mercy there will forever be
Strength and beauty, forever purity…
In the human spirit, where there is truly
Wonder that can’t be seen, but only felt
By the one who believes in the Savior
Who poured out His spirit inside each of us,
The souls who know that His love is alive
Abiding, like a gentle fire, … burning away
All the doubt and despair, the darkness
That might feel like a cloud hanging down
Over the spirit who knows that, with Him,
There is a promise that forever dances
To the music of belief that never wavers
Conviction that is always honest and trust
In the One who created us to grow
Through the unending devotion that shines
Through every tender mercy, in the spirit
Who knows that His light shines bright inside
Where the human spirit is designed to unite
With the Holy Spirit, the abiding touch
From a Savior who loves so very much
He actually came down and died for us!

Light falls down from the summer's sheer clouds
For the future no gates remain locked, spread your wings

A bird in the sky your soul flies free intoxicating spirits
Upon loves beautiful ray of light drunken wavers

Not dwelling on the past and using energy on what went wrong
Happy people get feelings out done and dusted

Awakening flames dancing butterflies flutter
Warm inner wings a heart takes glorious flight

Brilliance of a rainbow seducing thoughts softly whisper
Life's worth it's weight in gold, why hesitate ?

Inside the mirrors always aglow
Beauty's in the eyes forever one bows and beholds

As you open the door...
you are momentarily transported
back to an innocent child like state.
Your concentration wavers
as your senses react like a 4th of July
firework display.
Large, colorful posters cover the walls
surrounding you...
offering tasty descriptions of many of the items.
All the while the scents of chocolate, fruit,
along with a variable feast of
confectionery delights are taken in
with every breath.
You look around...it's almost your turn.
You must decide...but it can not be taken lightly,
or simply blurted out in a moment of desperation.
The moment has arrived as you step up to the counter.
As eye contact is made,
your mind gives second thoughts to your selection.
Taking a deep breath, you calm yourself...
you can do this you tell yourself,
as the words start to form.
" I'll have a scoop of chocolate chip mint...a scoop of fudge nut brownie,
and a scoop of strawberry cheesecake in a
chocolate waffle cone dish...topped with a modest swirl of whip cream
and hot caramel drizzle, crowned with one perfectly positioned cherry."
Your mouth waters as you take possession of your masterpiece.
As you turn, you look proudly at the others in line,
letting them see your perfectly proportioned glacial reward.
As you grab your spoon, you waste no time leaving,
changing back into an adult, climb back in your car
to feast privately...like a hungry mouse hiding...
eating the last piece of cheese.

I Knew You From a Distant Dream

I knew you from a distant dream
The sweet streams cry out
The dumb rocks perspire with dew
My heart flutters in your comely grace
You're more beautiful than the flower
And more sweeter than the nectar's burst
Your scent lingers like the wild breeze
Your hair escapes thro' the sad light
The blue moon dies on your lips.
Petal threads blew unannounced
It seems like a kiss has touched you
It seems like the fading light
And those wide brown lips trembles
Thro' the twilight songs of sweet lyres
Your words hold a certain sweetness
But my tongue is dumb as the rocks
Dumb to the long drawn kiss of your eyes
To but whisper a simple word
A swooning word of love
Before the morning light may spring
Before your hastening feet retreats
Down the dusty street
Where the fragrance shoots.

I knew you from a distant dream
The strangled notes of the sea
It died, then gave whisper to your name
The stars a laurel to your head
Your scarf on the lantern seas
My heart is clasped against yours
And then it beats soberingly fast
And then it breathes.... slowly
With love's tenderness.

I knew you from a distant dream
The night bled its frost that day
The popular shops shut their eyes
And the busy streets went to sleep
I've sank my eyes upon you
As a roving light humanly divine
Sank upon the half black earth.
I want you like the round plump grapes
That wavers in winters seasonal bloom
When the stars would rise and fall
On the quivered slender hues
Parked lightly on the bench.
There's a flame that does exist
It burns sweetly upon my dreams
There's a pulsating joy you draw
From the roots of my sorrowing heart
But I in this cold wide earth clung
To your cinnamon lips
And in your pleasant arms
Wide awake
Only to die again.

Premium Member She Waits

She waits in traffic while running her errands
singing along to the car radio,
then waits in lines at various places
smiling at faces she doesn’t know.
Evenings, she waits for her husband
cooking dinners she knows he will love.

Later, inside a room made for waiting,
she writes poetry prior to the appointment that alters her life.
She next finds herself waiting week after week
for the chemo to take its effect -
waiting and puking night after night,
but still always tucking her children in bed,
Bible stories read and nightly prayers said.

Soon her strength wanes, but she waits for good news.
It’s not in her nature to wait for the bad.
She waits, and her strength never wavers.
In the end, her husband is waiting on her -
hand and foot, like she’d waited on him.

They’ve laid her to rest, and her family all know
where she’s gone, she waits there for them.

Oh furry fan, you leave an
indelible paw print upon my heart.
Your devotion, unmovable as a
mountain, is ever true.
You look at me with adoration
yet it is I who learn what
faithful love is.

Your rock of loyalty never wavers
amidst the shifting
sands of life.
As I pet your fur with utter joy
I would not trade this moment
for all the treasures on earth.

It Must Be So

Sooth this irrational rage resplendent in its affliction
See through the foolish drawls that make up my surrounding core
Understand I see each flaw of mine in light of your brilliance
Not to compare yours to my worth as wretches do thrash in vain,
But to mold along your own tapestries,
And rightfully, in threads of gold, sustain

Oh, can it be as I request your stay,
That you are truly aware of the magic in your poetic sway
Of a life so drawn to the scaffolds of your welcoming mind
To see its dream, structure, and its whole, combined

It must be so, oh enthralling writer,
That we see through lenses reflecting all shimmers of might
Sifting and searching beneath all shades of blue
To find our reflections have touched surfaces we still yet discover
Within myself and you

And my love, it must be so,
That in your makings, your labors, your loves
I find myself not only nearer, but clearer,
As this budding rose no longer wavers in irksome winds of her doubt
Tremoring in such loathsome drawls birthed by some distant, parched earth
You, in your magic, cultivate and reward such growth
So that this rose ever rejoices her new mirth,
And with your sure, steadfast direction,
Out the very canals that gush your soul’s purpose
You seed her worth, feed her worth, and know her worth
Just as she worships yours
