Another Day Safe From the Harvester's Jaws

Out of the burrows and hedges and dreys
Heads began bobbing and eyes were agaze.
Rumours were twittered and grunted and squealed:
‘The combine is coming to harvest the field!’
The moles and the voles and the rabbits and hares
All hurried and scurried and scattered in pairs.
The hedgehogs and ladybirds, pheasants and shrews
Did all that they could to distribute the news.
Then all made a dash for old wise badger’s sett;
The only safe refuge in face of the threat.
There, in the deep hollow they felt the vibration
They shivered and shuddered in great trepidation.
The thrumming and thundering monster machine
Soon passed overhead... and then all was serene.
And out of the hollow came heads, tails and paws
Another day safe from the harvester’s jaws!

I chose this poem because not only is it one of my personal favourites, but to this day, I've no idea where all these little creatures came from! Written early on in my poetic endeavours, it made me appreciate fully the amazing powers of the imagination!

Premium Member A Fine New Day

"I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) I am never without it..." E.E. Cummings

Hello my dearest darling, it was our time to wake,
The rustic rooster had already roused my reverie,
Heralding the dewy dawn
Of our new great day.
For I could never live without you.
I yearned for your presence all the time.
Everywhere in the countryside was peace
And crowned with our steadfast love
With the sound of nurturing nature.

As I lay on our comfy broad bed,
I looked at my still-slumbering wedded wife.
Her fragrant freckled face looked on so serenely,
A soft sweet smile hovered on her luscious lips
So peaceful and fair,
As if she were amid many pleasant placid dreams
So I could not bear to wake her up and spoil
Her various favorite fantasies.

Suddenly her emerald eyes fluttered wide open,
And saw my boyish grim smiling seductively at her.
She grabbed my head and lowered me on her lips
That smell of lavish lavender filled my nostrils.
This was a harmonious heaven on earth.
Later we went down for our favorite food,
We rode our bikes and pedaled hard,
Admiring the snow-capped mountains that rose far.
Cedars, larches, and junipers adorned the steep slopes
Where eagles, kites and vultures flew
Searching for their potential prey.
Whilst on the grassy picturesque plain,
Warblers, thrushes and orioles
Twittered their serenade symphony songs.

Finally, we arrived at my Taverna
And beckoned the masterful Manager.
Heard the required report on the gains I made.
Everything was smooth
For I wear my enchanting emotions up my sleeve.

We idled the dreamy day away,
Hugging and kissing most of the time.
Partook of a delicious dinner for two,
But at closing time we went back home,
To a well-needed restful rural repose
In each other’s enticing embrace.

Premium Member In the Company of My Muse

On a walk companioned by my Muse along the sylvan meadows
We wandered away to delightful realms in unclouded ambience
Don’t know how long I rambled warming my fancies in sunset fires
Must be for long, all lights were out, the quiet hamlet lay bathed in sleep

Above me, stood the starry firmament and the half hidden moon
Could see the vast plains stretching before me in moonlight, bare
My heart was flooded with joy, my fancies took to wings
Got drowned in Nature’s serene calm, my spirit lost in drunken ecstasy

In the gentle blowing breeze, the leaves twittered and murmured
All else was quiet and nothing disturbed the serenity of the night
But soon I knew the East wind strengthening around into a gale
And across the moon I could see stragglers of clouds moving past

I sat on a rock, lost, so lost staring into the clear night sky
Wondering how the celestial joy, made manifest by the twinkling stars
My thoughts began floating like a ship over the briny waters
And my temporal settings faded away like a cloud in the horizon

From the nearby woods, I heard the song of a lone night bird
In rising cadence, alone and aloud it fell on my rapturous ears
Was it a nightingale that poured forth that dewy delight?
Was it the same song, Keats heard long ago cascading from the woods?

With my Muse in this unearthly hour let me sit awhile in this solitary bower
To my paper, let my fancies in unbroken crystal streams flow
Wonder if I can rightly recreate the image that my thoughts enfold
How I wish, I could like Coleridge, build a pleasure dome in mid air!

Premium Member Seek Shelter

In a dream, I was exploring a green forest, lush and tangled with vines.
Following a path I was on a quest of some sort. As I journeyed onwards
I stopped often to investigate a wildflower or a plant or to listen to birds
singing and chattering. I have no idea what I was looking for but I was
on a mission, determined I walked through the thick vegetation and came
to a stream. Oh lovely, a place to rest, taking off my shoes I put my feet
in the cool stream, oh blessed tranquility! Of course, I fell fast asleep and
when I woke it was raining. I needed to 'seek shelter' so I started walking
deeper and deeper into the forest for a refuge, perhaps an abandoned den
or cabin. A haven from the rain and wind, hopefully with a roof! And then,
there it was the perfect hideaway in the shadows of ancient trees. An old
home, a retreat from the storm. The door creaked and spiders scattered.
It was dusty but dry, I set up a resting place in my new found sanctuary.
All that night I listened to the patter of raindrops on the roof and in the
morning to the dawn birds calling each other. I felt the sun on my face
and opened my eyes to find myself in my own bed with my purring cat.

birds twittered to me
as I traversed the forest ~~

The Ballad of the Jacaranda

Walked six years, that way,
And watched this new suburb’s trend.
Near Mysore Highway,
Close to Bengaluru’s end.
Three storeys tall, stood,
This awesome tree-spread, so pretty.
Blue blossoms, good wood,
Half acre’s canopy.
‘Neath with sun-warmings,
Faded blue a carpet rose.
Of fallen, dried awnings,
Nature’s cycle, as it goes.
Hanging Traffic Lights,
Often, brushed by its branches.
Red light, hid from sights,
Officials, took no chances.
The machinery,
Was then set into motion.
People versus tree,
Few friends, one odd emotion.
The huge saws came in,
Chopping through, the whole, big tree,
Adding noise and din,
Workmen yelled, ‘Timber!’ in glee.
The earthmovers filled,
The gaping hole with rubble.
The tree was thus killed,
At great cost and much trouble.
The decorators,
Carted leaves to weddings halls.
Such deft creators,
Blooms to florists’ stalls.
The carpet-pile, twigs and chips,
All collected, swept,
Offals for funeral trips,
Departed unwept.
Their nests and hives gone,
The birds and the bees hovered,
Twittered , buzzed, flew on,
Their losses unrecovered.
The tree’s life on earth,
Cut short, for sale by auction.
Fetched a pittance’s worth,
The wood went for a fraction.

Traffic lights are safe now,
No mix-up of colour red.
Strange.. Green light, some how,
Blinks. Reminder of the dead.
Jacaranda tree,
God dressed your kind soul in wood.
You would have lived free,
You would have, lived, If you could.

Premium Member Can One Die From a Broken Heart

A girl met boy,
it was early spring,
she fell in love
and blossoms flourished.
She did all the right things,
to please just him.
If birds twittered
she flew into his arms,
made him love her in return.
Times were when she thought
they weren’t meant to be,
she wallowed in his embrace.
Trees grew, fruits formed,
she smiled in contentment,
quelled her conscience with a smile.
She lost her heart.
As autumn came and trees
shed their rusty leaves.
Still he made her smile.
She believed in fairy tales.
He made her laugh,
she believed in him.
He was her dream.
The trees were bare,
snow covered the ground.
She left her home,
knocked on his door
but he didn’t open it.
She stood there in the snow,
her tears mingling with ice.
Can one die from broken heart?

O Could I Fly

I flew my eyes
up to the bluish sky
and
saw two birds
twittered passionately
and i knew
they were fallen in love

through
their unique language
extremely beautiful
i knew
they were breathing out
the music of love
in the midst
of their romance

O..
Could i fly
I’d fly with them
Wild and free
With my phenomenal glitter
and
let the delicate wind
blow my twinkle eyes
to let them know
what
i really know
that
they were fallen
in love

A Strangers Love

“A Journey of a thousand miles, Must begin with a single step.” Lao Tzu

“A Strangers Love” By: Tom C. (Tomkatmandoo) © 2015 All Rights Reserved

Into the dark I stepped, where the sun shone bright,
Walking bleak and endless, I had no strength to fight.
The children laughed and played, the park was full of life.
I was a broken heart , filled with misery pain and strife.

The journey that I embarked upon, with no direction told,
Utter despair gripped my spirit, as I continued to unfold.
Birds twittered lively songs, me, I could not keep a beat.
In this mired muck and mud, I would only know defeat.

The echoes of the children, played in unison with the birds,
parents gathered as they spoke, I couldn't hear their words.
Lying before them, a wasted man, not knowing God at all,
Once perched upon my EGO’S stoop, I took the hardest fall.

As they spoke, A mans warm hands, gripped my trembling arms,
He lovingly lifted me to my feet, as he said I mean no harm.
A power surged right through me, bright lights went on inside,
I’m just here to guide you son and hugged me tightly as I cried.

I opened my eyes to see them gone, less the man who stood in place,
He pointed me in a new direction, then vanished without a trace.
The long journey that I take today, filled with tears of unbridled Joy,
God graciously never left my side, you see, his Love I now employ.

Betrayal

Waves murmured;
teasing winds caressed her body,
a lone seagull twittered.

Fires erupted;
her tongue explored his mouth,
torpid passions seethed out.

Mountains quivered;
their passionate bodies lay intertwined,
drizzling rains inebriated them.

Tongues wagged;
a man clenched his fists,
acrid anguish inundated him.

Hate brewed;
vile thoughts blurred his mind,
an animal peeped out.

Love died;
thunderous shots punctuated the air,
a deathly silence followed.

Newspapers screamed;
gruesome pictures shocked the city,
he was her husband.

Premium Member A Land of Mythical Creatures

Once upon a time in an alluring place
Flourishing realm sweet with seasons showers pace
The earth food for life the lush greenness embrace
Array of flowering plants that twirl and lace
Birds twittered on leafy branches full of grace
Rare butterflies with wide, vibrant wings took chase
Bobbing on the breezeless air they dare through space
Charmed fairies if you gaze close into their face
They sniffed the air scared to be spotted they’ll race
Satyrs played pan flutes others danced everyplace
While others sang a phrase carrying a mace
“Steady my heart; scented blooms cannot unlace
The beauty of your face I cannot erase”
Dare venture down a well-trod maze; rocks retrace
Your way back dazed so be prepared just in case

Premium Member My Restless Spirit

My sorrowful spirit rose high above the rainbow,
higher yet, until it reached the snowy peaks
of the ragged mountain. It was cold there,
though above the severe sun blazed hard.

Here and there rivulets tumbled roughly
down the mountainsides, and occasionally
meet to form a river that cascaded downwards
towards the high cliff beneath the hills.

The icy waters fell towards the crags,
forming a waterfall of fresh water, producing
a constant melody as the waters hit the plain,
forming a delightful and narrow lake.

Birds above twittered delightfully,
a serene sight and sound that pleased my sad spirit.
Tall verdant pines exuded delightful fragrance.
How I wish I could stay there forever.
But my tired body beckoned
and my spirit returned to my lonesome solitary bed.

Draped In Rhymes

Ah,rebellious spirit wanting space
With my finger on the map I paced
I climbed Helvellyn, fell off Striding Edge
Spent a lifetime hanging off a ledge

Meanwhile our kind teacher twittered on
Thomas Hardy, Hopkins., we were numb
She never mentioned she saw my escape
How the nuns hurt me, the cruel rape

I slipped on High White Stones and almost dropped
My feet were dangling off the fearsome rocks
No-one knew for I was climbing last
Know me please but never learn my past

How quickly life has run since I could climb
Now I merely sit here draped in rhymes

Horizon

As I wished for a dawn -
The dewed leaf fell up on the miry earth,
And the budding friendship blossomed with the auroral sky
The birds cheeped out of their ardent nests
And I greeted another new day
Charmed by the chromatic rays.

As I wished for a morning
The jogger lo and behold by the graceful cyan,
And the solitary realm pelted along with those hasty walks
The birds twittered yet their voice fainted by the lively crowd
And I hastened another fussy time
Peeved by the discomposed sounds.

As I wished for a noon
The shadow of mine lost somewhere under my feet
And the sweated hours seemed so long with flames that illumed the paves
The birds nested themeselves peeping out from the quenched trees
And I abided another hateful infinity
Jaded by the grieving entity.

As I wished for an evening
The juvenility amended out from those felicitous doors
And the twilight that ignited the sky above with the shining moon and the stars
The birds whistled along with the faithful breeze
And I dewlt by the golden rays sparked in the sky
Honoring the sun with a good-by.

As I wished for a night
The spiritual approach to life was fended by the saltatory notes
And the solitary moon esteemed the streets with the splendor of love
The birds benumbed along with the intimacy that followed
And I whispered to the midnight mo
Awaiting for the next dawn to another midnight wo.
