A Mathematical Uncertainty

Can you count the times you’ve crossed me
And divide it by the times you disrespected me
Then multiply that by the times you hurt me
And come up with a figure?

Relatively speaking it’s a simple equation
Resulting in a drastic re-calculation of the outcome.

Can you give me the square root of the problem
That started this whole conundrum in the first place
And tally up the results and give me a statistical
Analysis comparing the amount of times you
Left me wondering why I’m on this earth
Or if I’m not worthy of trust?

I’m sure the answer would be skewed resulting
In the necessity to rethink the control group.

I believe the right course of action would be to
Figure out the base and height of the love triangle
You thought I wouldn’t notice, and in case you didn’t know
It, I’m pretty good at trigonometry.

Cause for me, who came into this problem with
Total devotion and a faithful trust, this doesn’t

Add up.

Try leave behind "Book Of The Week"
And head upstairs where floorboards creak.

Where people tilt their heads to look
At every spine on every book.

Where murderers and secret lovers
Plot and scheme between the covers.

Where transport from another age
Transports you to another page.

Where old detective books reside
Each with their price pencilled inside.

Where books based on geometry
Share space with trigonometry.

Where childhood annuals stand in line
With memories of a simpler time.

Where silent thoughts pervade the air
And words speak volumes everywhere.

A 'C' Change

If you should search for knowledge
To answer the riddle of your self

All the books found on every library shelf
Might not relieve your puzzle a smidge

Because ‘h’ is the difference of self from shelf
Search within and you’ll see without eyes.

Things happen in a test tube
That we can easily observe and explain

But anywhere outside of it
It’s not quite the same

That’s because it’s out in the open
Where there’s less control and closure.

Some advise taking only two steps
Once into and once out of water

Supposedly while you’re watching
Perpendicular to a flowing stream

So firstly you get your feet wet
And then you get them dry.

Or you take the opposite length
Over the adjacent length

Then every measured distance
Makes each tangent different

But if trigonometry was used at Pisa
That’s not why the place is famous.

So if a princess was in a tower
And let’s assume she was a prisoner

At least she should have a window
Because horizons offer a fine view

Then the next time the witch calls her
Rupunzel throws down her chair.

Mathematics - Pleiades

Multitude of numbers,
  Multiply, add, divide,
    Minus, percentage, graphs,
      Metres, centimetres,
        More trigonometry,
          Merge with geometry,
   Magic of solving sums.

Pi
What statistics?
What trigonometry?
Geometry bamboozles me
The math language completely shuts me down.
Pre-algebra breaks my brain waves.
Please let’s not speak of these
Crazy math terms.

Dejavu For Two

Dejavu for Two

Perfect is far from perfect
But yet so close to it
Two stars are better than one...

So this gotta be worth it
If I’m not mistaken,
we may have met in heaven before
this is exactly what he’s sayin’

Dejavu for two stars?
We could take this so far
There’s this feeling in the air
but I can’t quite touch it from over here
It’s like we’ve sat right here
across from each other before
in this exact same booth…
I saw what you were thinking
and you thought the same too
Mysterious miracles are possible
with two amazing people
I’m not talkin’ chemistry or biology
or even crazy mathematics in trigonometry
This is unbelievable past the point til’ it’s believable

But then again, if we never get the chance
to work on the island of paradise city…
It was nice to meet you, greet you,
and share a seat with you
to experience this moment of
“Dejavu for Two”

Trigonumeracy (Trigonometry)

Trigo
Trigonometry.
Angle repeated to infinity.
Triangulate an epic sine.
I've far too often crossed a line.
A line that lies on the hypotenuse.
And whisks its way into my muse.
That tangent is frequently opposite.
The place where wearily I sit.
And dreams of triangles fill my head.
Yet spherical lobotomies fill me with dread.
I cannot understand these simple theories.
Perhaps because they are portrayed as dreary.
Trigonometry

Trigonumeracy.

Math

The numbers fly in, and out
and many more left, to fly about !

First, it was addition, then Subtraction
and now to Calculus and trigonometry!

Of course, I was stuck sometimes
but I've never given up!

Some take hours to solve
and some are done in a snap!

Math, I would say is in every way
witty and amusing

It's used in every sphere of life
never will there be an end!

There are never enough questions and
even better concepts evolve day after day

It's a subject like no other, and ...

The numbers fly in and out
and many more left to fly about !!

During my elementary, high school and college educational quest,
I struggled to do my very best on every mathematical test.
I was a "B" student in English, History and Art as I recall,
But I never mastered the mysteries of mathematics at all!

Basic arithmetic such as division and multiplication left me at sea.
Even simple addition and subtraction overwhelmed me to a degree!
Trying to conquer the times-table gave me a shocking jolt!
Alas, teachers considered me a hopeless mathematical dolt!

Geometry baffled me as to which were acute and obtuse angles,
And even more perplexing were isosceles and scalene triangles!
Beyond me were the formulas for figuring the areas of hexagons,
Trapezoids, pyramids, circles, cubes and five-sided pentagons!

Teachers told me that for my future, algebra was indispensable.
Maybe so, but variables and coefficients were incomprehensible!
My limited intellect couldn't comprehend quotients and binomials,
Nor integrers, exponents, irrational numbers and trinomials!

Needless to say, I didn't attempt calculus or trigonometry!
Those disciplines were as foreign to me as parabolic geometry!
I'm eternally grateful to that selfless, ingenioius creator,
Who eased my plight by inventing the handy calculator!

Mathematical Chemistry

Words would remain caged as her eyes gazed at mine
She resided in my Maths and Science book back in Grade nine
She visited me in my sleep; my dreams were no longer mine
According to my mom, my grades were no longer fine
She solved simultaneous equations for me with her exquisite smile
Took over my Trigonometry, I was Sine while she became Cosine
Theta became love to this heart of mine
Selfishness took over; the strategy was to make her mine
Formed new Laws of Physics, the attraction I could no longer hide
Dark brown watery eyes that made my feet lose a straight line
She remained the X Axis and I the Y Axis that never intersected her line
I could claim that she eventually became mine
but gravity took over as this love intertwined
I fell so hard but I was fortunate to be rescued by this pen of mine

I guess she will never know, Phumlani Mthethwa

Love Is Strange

Love Is Strange

I wish I could be the ocean: free, vast, and open, without mundane human responsibility.
Can you get me a coffee with a spoonful of magic?
The one that tastes like malt liquor, smells like honey, feels like velvet, looks like danger, and sounds like explosions caused by planes.
They say terrorists are real, but stories are made up everyday, the stories that look like America and taste like lies.
George Bush, The White House.
I don’t want to be the ocean, it’s so cold, open, and vast. Eternal,
that is all it is. Eternal.
Bae hates this land.
If we elect our next president, he, she, they will change our world for the better.
Ne me quitte pas
The red cow of Value knows trigonometry.
I went to India last summer and met Buddha, talked to Jesus, too, and he told me society was a trick.
Phil is a smart, kind, and compassionate person; he is a good friend.
This poem is published all over the world, it’s exposed the biggest lie from the rulers of the world.
I met thrilling in Italy.
It is possible for a cow to jump over the moon if the cow is strapped to rockets.
No chingues!
Every night my Vinyl player begs for me to sleep with her. She starts singing to me and before I know it, she has seduced me. Still,
Red cows bleed virtue over humans and speak trigonometry in those sleepless nights.
Goodnight.

The inventor of the number system and chess;
the originator of algebra, trigonometry and calculus;
with the globe’s largest railway and postal network
and second to none in the height of a bridge.
We speak of the largest government of, for and from the people.

Beats Israel, Egypt, Mecca, Rome and Greece
in the number of religious visitors attracted to its shrines.
The circumference of its seasonal experience
is well partitioned into six segments.

It is the major contributor in giving the world some spicing,
its currency and sharing are very big antonyms
while Meghalaya is confirmed to be the globe’s tongue.
Even with these medals and accolades,
it still struggles to give women enough warmth and comfort

You, a friend and another person make a trio
A tie breaking vote maybe the third (3)

I saw her sitting by herself in the periphery;
She missed someone I knew was better than me.
Two halves don’t make a whole,
But two is company,
And I’m fair with trigonometry.

I don’t care about your boyfriend in Germany.
I don’t care about all the baggage you brought over from Florida,
Your daddy issues,
Your paradoxical self-defeated self-importance,
How you’re yesterday’s big news.
Please, take off your coat, have a drink,
Slip into my ruse.

If we’re not so lucky,
I’ll introduce you to the person I keep
Battered down inside
Of me.
The side
That hides
Beneath the wide-
Eyed mind
Of helplessly
Restless nights.

I had years of therapists telling me to dig into that
God damned clamoring tantrum of self.
Of course, the only time I asked for help,
I got tenfold pitches for prescriptions;
I got a hospital bed.
And a broken-record of out-of-time doctors
That said it was all in my head.

And I wished I was dead.

When I was four years old,
My mother took me with her when she did men for drugs.
Or left me in her apartment, screaming;
She said, "Nothing ever shuts up."

The magazine says
I should consider a new medication,
And busy work and meditation.

Sweet girl, you probably don’t care for hell;
So call to tell him that everything’s swell.
In the morning I promise not to dwell.

Note to self:

If you’re reading this,
Please treat yourself well.
And quit chasing nightmares
That teach you about yourself.

Premium Member Poetic Locus Versus Mathematical Focus

Two activities I love have a similarity,
To experience and conjecture in verse,
And to explore limits of certainty.
Rhyme and meter, whether wordy or terse,
Enact seeing freshly, banning banality.
Math proofs are finding a needle in a hay source,
Needing imagination to reach finality.
Many school veterans curse,
“Algebra is not daily reality!”
“Trigonometry makes life worse!”
But poetry and math have a commonality,
They both tease out how the world works,
Neither rewards conventionality,
Both work by seeing the diverse.
I admit rote formulas draw my enmity,
Whether in word or number universe.
I’ve found in sonnets and theorems an equality,
If you disagree, you can rightfully call this poem a hearse.
