Best Creature Comforts Poems
A collection of charming Christmas calico cats curled up cozily -my creature comforts
Written Dec. 10, 2015 for One liners five: Alliteration
Frisky, gray squirrels scramble
Beneath a massive, old oak tree
Gathering the best acorns they see
Their fluffy tailed, lively damsels
Opossum wobble on short legs
From their laurel sheltered lairs
Toward the thickets where there’s
Vast bugs and spiders in their webs
Gentle, soft haired rabbits assemblage
Onward, seeking out grassy fortresses
Where they might discover tortoises
And additional special kinds of foliage
Black and white stripped skunks
Bob out toward their furry friends
Reassured they will make amends
So they will help them over tree stumps
Russet colored raccoons with charming features
Searching for their favorite pine tree expansion
Scrambling up through the long branches
To havens above all the other creatures
Big, black bear grumble through woods so eerie
Checking all around for beehives or cherries
Hoping to find a bit of honey or sweet berries
To munch on before the weather gets dreary
Tan and bronze deer clamber up cliffs that deliver
To the meadows where they’re stopping together
To chew long grass and weeds found whether
They make their trek toward the gently flowing river
Forests are thriving with these unique beings
All the different beasts living there from across
Pine, oak, birch, locust, laurel, fern and moss
God’s gifts to us who love this place so pleasing
Dark, punishing days lie ahead.
Winter has crept up once again and I'm deep
in sad contemplation, saying a silent prayer
for the downtrodden without the creature comforts
I often take for granted, imagining how
they're muddling through life.
Each time the furious rage of winter roars
belligerently, wreaking miserable havoc,
and it's chill on my skin is immediate
and unforgiving; I think of those occupying
ramshackle dwellings with no heat
to keep warm, and say a silent prayer.
Especially on my mind, all the homeless folks
I've given money to while stopped at a traffic light.
"You've made my day, sir. God bless you!,"
I remember one once saying to me.
Where is this man now? Somewhere warm and safe?
Please, God, hear my silent prayer for him!
The mere thought of one,
just one stray animal, fending for itself out in the cold
is depressing enough to make me misty-eyed.
Why is life during winter so appallingly savage?
It's too harsh an element for such a poor creature. I say
a silent prayer for God's mercy. It's really all I can do.

She walked away
Hurriedly,
Without looking back,
Not thinking about
What she will be leaving behind
Not thinking about
The creature comforts
No afterthought and no regrets
All she could think about
Was getting away,
As far as possible before
He gets back
To discover or uncover
Another reason why she needs
To be his punching bag
His reasons always valid
Though silly in her eyes
But to him, it gave him
A reason,
It gave him
The authority
To lift his hand
It gave him the right
To kick her
Abuse her verbally
Treat her like she was nothing
Until today,
Until she found out
About the baby
She had something else
To live for
Dying was no longer a
Priority….

*Ps: a work of fiction,
but a subject that is
pretty close to my heart,
having worked with abused
women*

Romans 13:8 “…Pay your debts as they come due. However, one debt you can never finish paying is the debt of love that you owe each other.
the mailbox, stuffed~
mortgage payments, car loans
with balances and deadlines
marked in red.
water, gas, and electric bills~
the hungry phantoms of
creature comforts
coldly due.
we chase the spectral zero balance,
dream of that stamped envelope
with the sweet release of
paid in full.
but the other statement
never arrives~
no perforated tear line,
no due date circled in red.
it’s a debt, unlisted, un-itemized,
it haunts no credit score,
demands no late fees~
a debt we’ll always carry.
this bill arrives not monthly
but daily~in every heartbeat,
every hunch that kindness calls
beyond oneself.
this debt, this sweet, persistent owing
is paid in tears dried on a loving sleeve,
with burdens carried, with forgiveness offered,
and in whispered reassurances.
this debt’s non-ending, compounds with kindness~
the interest paid daily—not in coin
but in soulful connection
and ego transcendence.
Spare a thought
For buffaloes, bulls and bears groaning, mourning, starving
Under your collar don’t blow hot
Making rivers and rodents sad, carving
Space and time you don’t own
Encroaching on privileges animals and plants possess
In their comfort and discomfort zone
You dare to distress and stress
Best to minimize the plight
Reptiles and rabbits confront every morning and afternoon
With no morsels of grub in sight
As savannas and simians croon
Shambling in starvation style
Bulging bellies boast as labels of stables and fables of gluttony
For a convoy of jalopies cruising in single file
Pay last respect to Tony
Who’d passed on in pitiful poverty
Impecunious
Although in death no novelty
Comes through under the guise of ingenious
Crafting of manipulation
But you’d do well to sacrifice creature comforts to elevate the fate
Endured by long suffering trees and tigers whose daily nourishment ration
Ought to funnel a debate
On the injustice witnessed globally when a tiny few
Gorges on two thirds of world resources
With neither care nor clue
On the abuse fauna and flora sources
Suffer
Dwindle
Prefer
Decrease as the self satisfying spindle
Spins and spins
With little thought on air and water pollution
Pins
On environmental dissolution
Metamorphosing the Earth into a less habitable planet
Treated with disdain
Depleting the Earth’s net
Worth as polluters gain bargains again and again
Super profits
Turning a blind eye
To sarcasm skits, bludgeon bits and tendentious tweets
Lying inside a liberal lie
That all’s well
Environment concerns mean nothing
As imbalances and inhospitable elements swell
To spell doom unless you start caring for Mother Earth and her everything.
The scars are slowly fading away
A pity the fear seems to be here to stay
We use to share a love so deep
Heaven knows how we let it just seep
Through our fingers -
Your love turned to a slap,
A swear word to bring your point across
I didn’t know fear until a few years ago
When you accidently pushed me away
Your sorry still echo until today
You’ve said it so many times
Every other day -
I needed to get away,
Not just for myself but for our unborn child
Now here I sit, with nothing
But a friend’s unquestionable love,
That gives me the strength to go on
The ability to start anew
Showing me there is a life beyond
Swear words and abuse
I may not have those creature comforts
You use to provide
But I can fall asleep peacefully at night
Knowing our baby is safe
And his mom will not wake up with a
Swollen lip or blue eye in the morning

Spring rain
Swaying trees;
Howling wind
Wet cherry blossoms
Dewy flower carpet;
Trail of footsteps
This sudden splash
Vivid skyline colours;
Rainbow reminder
Eastern shores
Sea at high tide;
Misty translucence
Lovers by seaside
Sunset serenade;
Fragrant promises
Sunset strip
Winding pathway;
Moments slip away
Love wears a smile
Spontaneous feel;
Authentic embrace
Here by the bay
Seagulls congregate;
Birdsong sermons
Mango clusters
Ready harvest;
Chutney forthcoming
Vegetable mix
Salad dinner meal;
Cool sitcom heralds
Saturday newspapers
Extra thick volume;
Too much to digest
Years have mellowed
Old couple sit together;
Silently talking in smiles
Diabetic in wheelchair
Distraught temper;
Selling tissue packs
Touch of magic
Calm enlightenment;
Charm deposits
Bank queue at noon
Sea of faces;
Unknown agendas
Come let us see
Beyond creature comforts;
Confront hazards
Once upon a blue moon
This invitational;
Rites of passage
By and by,
The vast dark skies;
Awaiting thunder
Blur as a squid
This instance here;
Lost in translation
Joy in the rain
This funny feeling;
Live in sure verge

i treated your loss just like death
grieving for you as i did my mother
i still wonder if the universe
wasn't teaching me a lesson in karma
for you were a personification of heaven
which surely meant there would be hell to pay
for a year i tried to drown you out
with illegal drugs and spirits
something to wipe away the memories
numb the gut wrenching pain
and to quiet the nightmares
that made me fearful of sleep
you still remain
after my previous endeavors failed
i sought out pleasurable company
calling on old acquiantances
and admirers of our once shared love
dull, boring, lacking in every sense
and that is putting it mildly
then that lonely august afternoon
an unexpected surprise
chiming from within my apartment
your tender voice on the other end
everything rushing back
my soul revitalized
your freshman year in your rearview
returning home to gather creature comforts
inviting me for a ride along to arizona
after all others had declined
i hesitated thinking it a bad idea
but knew the courage it must've took to ask
hey danny, do you remember
sleeping in the cab of your truck
at that shady looking truck stop
just over the new mexico state line
you nestled up in my arms sleeping
just like old times
i remember climbing with you
through the catalina shadows
chasing roses instead of lilacs
jumping over chasms
eating prickly pears
and showering in the springs
three days i spent in your bliss again
while three days you sharpened your dagger
waking up to the sight of ian
hovering over me, smiling
like a buzzard mocking its pray
unaware i'd been mislead
our time together cut short by my request
unable to bear the thought of you having moved on
standing alone at the terminal side-by-side
your hand reached over to cup mine
turning i could see the tears welling up in your eyes
your voice cracking now with apologies
one final embrace
your face buried into my chest as you sobbed
your eyes opening shedding tears
one final kiss
feeling just like the first
under the fall
a decade has gone by
i've sworn off love in hopes
someday you'll return to reclaim what's yours
now and forevermore
even after all we've been through
you still remain

When the sparrows chirp from the branches,
of the enchanted blossomed cherry tree,
My heart wishes if I were one of the lucky birds,
I would not have missed the beauty and grace of your love.
When the tears stop coming down the eyes,
they freeze into dry tears inside the tormented lonely heart,
My heart wishes if it could feel and touch you,
And listen to the soft and romantic music of your heart.
My life boat drifts aimlessly in the ocean of life,
With beacon of hope gone out of sight,
My heart desires if you were with me,
We would be paddling in our own ways with some hope in sight.
There is an emptiness and a void in the heart,
where all the creature comforts don't mean a lot,
My heart dreams the impossible unity dream,
How much I miss you, only me and my heart knows.
he built a wing to the house that they bought
together,
because he needs space but he has no way to
get away,
now that she & the kids are a permanent
fixture,
now that the job & the house payments,
the taxes, the diapers, the sleepless nights &
the overwhelming
stress
of a life settled for,
have filled his world---
he stuffs his wing with
creature comforts,
the things that she deems childish or
she simply has no interest in---
he’s got everything from a special refrigerator
for his favorite brew, to a big screen tv. for his
xbox---
he’s fully equipped &
when his friends come over for the big game,
he leaves the kids & the wife in the house &
they all flood the man cave
for a itty bitty piece of happiness &
had they not forgotten to turn their cell phones off,
each of them could spend as long as they wanted there,
like big boys who still had a crumb of
individuality,
but alas,
as the calls begin to come in,
each domesticated man is picked off
one by one &
the misery of
middle-age-&-married-with-kids
hits him like a
brass knuckle fist---
he’s played his roll,
propagating the species &
will live out the rest of his days
pretending he knows what it feels like to be
free.
As every blossom wilts and every youth
Yields to old age so manifests every stage of life,
All wisdom and every virtue
Has its time, and cannot last forever.
At every call of life, the heart,
Wrapped in bravery and without regret,
Must be ready to take its leave and start again,
To embrace each new adventure.
For a magic lives in each beginning
That shelters and helps us to thrive.
Let us move calmly from place to place,
Clinging to nothing as if it were a home,
The “Age” does not chain or confine our dreams,
It guides our steps toward increased opportunity.
But homelike surroundings, creature comforts,
Tempt us to let down our guard.
Only those prepared to let go, to love revolution,
Have a chance to escape crippling habits.
Perhaps even the hour of our death
Will open fresh new vistas to challenge us,
Might life’s call to life be never ending then?
Let it be so! Heart! Take your leave and health!

Dirty, tatterdemalion in appearance
He's clothed in worn-out raiment, his hair unkempt;
Perambulating through concrete jungles with...
No place to call home.
He carries his entire life in his backpack.
No money to spend; hunger pangs relentless.
On the move from shelter to shelter, he has...
No place to call home
He's but a man the rest of the world forgot;
Loneliness written in his sickly sad eyes.
It's so harsh life devoid of creature comforts;
No place to call home.

Plan a complete list as the journey calls;
Align you fond needs with creature comforts;
Choose then the best gist with homely footfalls;
Keep a steady feed beyond things deferred;
Include your best toys as wit can weave pun;
Now gather your stuff with conscious delight;
Glimpse pleasant employ from travel and fun.
Free form floods enough as treasures fill sight;
Orbit your motions with generous jest;
Reach for the easy with all thoughts breezy.
Touch fancies function as wayfarer's zest;
Ripe is the frenzy for outcomes friendly;
Indulge your witness with new waves of change;
Placate new madness as meetings feel strange.

It's those hot southern summer days filled with lots of outdoor work, sun, and humidity that I will never forget. Although they are rather unforgettable but not at all memorable. Air conditioning did not live there, but electric fans blew loudly through the sweaty night. Surely the sun's heatwaves often felt like microwaves on both the just and the unjust, but there were those fortunate enough to possess a good share of 'creature comforts'. Unfortunately, we were not among them.
Such breeze-starved conditions beg to be easily forgettable tortures of yesteryears. On far too few occasions, just before a rainstorm, a cool breeze flew our way, and just before the bright and deep blue skies turned grey, in our minds, God's angels had defeated the demons of gloom, and heaven had invaded hell with memorable breezes.
And now, methinks my brain is departmentalized and programmed for memories of those cool breezes of summer where only the fittest survived the terrorizing sweat and tears. By God's grace, I survived but some fainted, and the rest got fed up, quit, and moved away.
