Premium Member What Easter Means To Me

I followed you from Galilee
To that sad day on Calvary
     Of love You spoke
     New hope You woke

Some said I was a prostitute
In me You saw no ill repute
     My heart now cries
     I watch You die

Sharp spikes that pierce Your hands draw blood
And through my heart emotions flood
     A Son so blessed
     Is laid to rest

Three days I stayed outside Your tomb
Never to see You I presumed
     And though I mourned
     Glory's reborn

I genuflect and watch You rise
To join Your Father in the skies
     This blessed day
     Showed us “The Way”

The sacrifice You made for man
Celebrated in many lands
     Easter Sunday
     Give thanks and pray

Written in the first-person view of Mary Magdalene, one of Christ’s best known
disciples. According to modern religious scholars, the Gospels of Mark and John say
she was the first person to see Jesus after he rose from the dead.

Premium Member Nevermore Will Raven Return

*Note: A 60-year annual tradition that involved a mysterious visitor leaving three
roses at the grave of writer Edgar Allan Poe on the anniversary of his birthday
ended in January 2010. Curators of the Poe House and Museum are at a loss to
explain who left these gifts and why they stopped. On many occasions people kept
vigils near Poe’s grave during this period that began in 1949, but no one ever saw
someone leaving the roses. In the morning, however, they were always on his
grave. Poe is considered the father of the American short story and
his poem The Raven is one of his best known works.

Once upon a midnight dreary, Poe heard a tapping at his window
While grieving the loss of his young bride, a maiden “angels named Lenore,”
A radiant teen whose long, black hair in gentle breezes would billow,
Tapping at the window ceased, but suddenly it was heard at his door

Upon opening it, a Raven flew in repeating, “Nevermore”
At first he welcomed this odd visitor until Poe whispered, “Lenore”
When he heard his word echo, the strange Raven he began to abhor
He asked if he’d see his bride again and the bird replied, “Nevermore”

Though Poe died in eighteen forty-nine, a mystery evolved much later
A century after his death, his grave had an annual visitor
Roses were left on his birthday by someone whose love appeared greater
Who had left these floral gifts forever stumped the Poe House curator

Perhaps the answer can only be explained by reincarnation
Did the Raven embody the spirit of Poe’s beloved Lenore
If so, perhaps the Raven returned again in a life rotation
In human form she visited to lay roses on the earthen floor

And upon her death in two-thousand nine, she took to the skies once more
A Raven who now joins the flock circling above her late husband’s grave \/
Could it be her spirit remains with Poe, as it did in life before \/ \/ \/
Bringing him in the afterlife all the roses a poet could crave \/ \/ \/ \/

For those who consider this possibility totally absurd
Just consider the fantasies Poe created with the written word

Premium Member The Garden

"I come to the garden alone"
He is here in this quiet place
"He speaks and the sound of His voice"
Offers peace, hope in my space

"While the dew is still on the roses"
"I come to the garden alone"
The bird in the tree still doses
These moments with Him best known

"I'd stay in the garden with Him"
Though life to me is calling, tomorrow
"I come to the garden alone"
Again, how I want to go slow

"And He tells me I am His own"
His assurance is my capstone
Once more on this another day
"I come to the garden alone"

"In The Garden" Charles A Miles, 1913

Children of the Valleys

And as the hills yonder
Turned red from sunset rays
As darkness engulfed the valley
And the sweet sounds of birds
Rent the cool evening air

Our cows and sheep and goats
Hurried down the footpath
As though they were late
To a gathering of clans
Or to one of their own

And we the happy herds' boys
Turned our ravenous thoughts
To bananas yams and milk
And all available munch-able stuff
To calm our restless tummies

And as the evening metamorphosed into night
And the stars of the sky reclaimed their might
We the famished children of the valleys
Approached the fireside with widening eyes
As the roughshod soldiers laid claim to all
And shot in the air to frighten us all.

And so we watched with pangs of hunger
Training our wrath and rancor and dismay
To other sons and daughters of Africa
Who for reasons best known to them
Or known only to their heartless handlers
Proclaimed themselves ‘defenders of our freedom.’

Voila! Children of the valleys of Africa
And of the cities and slums of Africa
You who gather in the evening breeze
After torrid days in the fields and streets
Only to return to a darkening sky
Sans food sans wear sans light. Voila!

Belated Elegy and Eulogy For Sir Abdul Kalam

Professor Abdul Kalam the luminous brilliant star

I pay homage to you from here in Dar

Great brill scientist in the field of Aerospace

A noble man with an intellectual mien and grace

Aeronautics and more were his speciality wow!

He's referred to as India's best known nucleur Scientist.

An inventive mind has passed away now

Lets celebrate and commemorate a great catalyst

He did India proud and did a lot for her

All Indians who know him will concur

Elected as her great President as well

Sad now to bid him adieus and farewell

Yay, the Indian soil has now a brilliant hero in her bosom indeed

I adoringly salute this great man of my race and my creed.

When a scientist dies it is a great loss for us all
May God raise more like him after his inevitable fall

But he can now repose in heaven's lap
On earth though he has left a mighty gap.

God I believe, loves those who utilise His gift of brains
Meditation releases us from earthly fetters and chains

Science and learning works your mind ; the brain needs exercise too
So I thank God for scientists , for scientific minds
That help to illuminate and enlighten this world, for me and you.

Premium Member Defining Red

Red: A Definition

Primary and indispensable.
Intuitively felt as warm, never cold.
Romantic in its nature with body and depth.
Wafting sentience from a glass,
Willing drama to a bedroom.
Regaled as royalty by nature,
Often reduced by perception.
Best known and least understood.
Loyal, virtuous, the keeper of secrets,
The orator of life,
The measure of love.

Africa Saves Her Daughter

Africa Kills Her Sun in Ken Saro-Wiwa short story
So far the greatest short story i've ever read
Where the blackest pen lives
With the blackest ink with the darkest hue
Yet the blackest truth out there even to this day
Of the oppression, dictatorship, killings, fear, corruption and discrimination
A call for freedom
Africa still living in the shadows of colonialism

But Africa took an initiative, a positive compass

Mary Muthoni Nyanjiru, an unsung hero
Shot dead during the colonial era for her fight against colonialism
Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel peace prize
She planted one tree at a time, a voice for the environment, a fighter for women rights
Charity Kaluki Ngilu has played many roles in politics
One of the first kenyan female presidential candidates
I still remember the 1997 elections

Pamela Jelimo and Catherine Ndereba
Through their marathons, they have paved many seas
I remember those cross country days back in primary school, it was tough
I applaud you girls

Grace Ogot, East African best known woman author
The mother of Kenyan literature
Her words had power, and her actions showed it
Captain Irene Koki Mutungi, the first African female dreamliner captain
Flying higher and higher, more girls dreaming higher and higher

Kakenya Ntaiya, among the top 10 CNN heroes of 2013
I've listened to your Ted Talk of "a girl who demanded education"
About how at the age 12 you made a deal with your dad to undergo female circumcision if he would let you go to highschool
And that happened, you even went to college
And then came back and founded a school for young girls

Lupita Nyong'o, it was hard to watch "12 Years a Slave"
Because truth brings out a lot of anger, but at the same time it has to be told
The first Kenyan actress to win an Academy Award.
It nice to see you in magazines but it feels even more nice to know that there is a girl out there in some village
Who now believes it's possible because of you

Africa saved her daughter, and by doing so
It saved all

Gunsynd - the Goondiwindi Grey

He was out of Woodie Wonder by the stallion Sunset Hue,
A freak thought breeding purists, who would surely end up glue.
For greys were so unfashionable he'd never get a start,
But this colt was a fighter with a truly valiant heart.

His origins were New South Wales, but sold up Queensland way,
'Twas Pippos, Coorey, Bishop and McMicking bought the grey.
A Goondiwindi syndicate, who gave the colt his name;
Gunsynd ... the punter's darling ... who raced his way to fame.

He'd never be a Peter Pan, a Carbine or Phar Lap,
No Tullock or a Galilee, but still a gallant chap.
Bill Whelow was his trainer and John Edmonds rode The Grey,
Till finally at Eagle Farm this colt was on his way.

It was the Hopeful Stakes that day in nineteen sixty-nine,
Young Gunsynd flashed from thirteenth place to cross the winner's line.
His trademark was his courage, his will to want to win
And how he made the crowds all stand to cheer the grey horse in.

They loved The Grey's performances; a showman through and through
And though he never always won they saw him as true blue.
Before and after races, he would play the press and crowd
By standing to attention while they clapped and cheered aloud.

With twelve wins to his credit Tommy Smith was now the chap,
Who trained Gunsynd while Langby won the Epsom Handicap.
He was the punter's darling, for he never squibbed a race,
That's why the folk all loved him, for he never did lose face.

The white and purple colours were well known at ev'ry track,
Australia's best known jockeys sat astride old Gunsynd's back.
The likes of Olsen, Higgins and young Langby rode The Grey
And flashed to blist'ring finishes, he raced no other way.

In over fifty starts Gunsynd had twenty-nine great wins;
Some eight point five times second placed, but took it on the chin.
Six thirds and unplaced in ten starts throughout those grand five years,
His name was up there with the best who'd raced to great careers.

Though sold to stud in New South Wales, Kia Ora down near Scone,
Queenslanders all adopted him and saw him as their own.
He'd put old Gundy on the map and right down to this day
Gunsynd is still remembered as The Goondiwindi Grey.

KNOW THAT IT IS A VITAL PART OF HUMANITY,

Premium Member End of the Bowden Reign

From Deion Sanders to Warrick Dunn
Bobby Bowden coached some of the best
Highly regarded by team and staff
The FSU coach withstood each test

With two national championships
And two great Heisman Trophy winners
Tallahassee fans basked in glory
Until the talent ranks grew thinner

Suddenly loyalty’s cast aside
Despite thirty-three FSU years
Just a few losses were all it took
To turn his fickle fans’ cheers to jeers

How sad Bobby’s been asked to step down
Glory fades fast; don’t rest on laurels
Fans want a young gun to take the lead
But he’ll never match Bobby’s morals

The coach who refused to cuss or quit
Gave Marshall his playbook when their team died
Best known for just saying, “Dad Gummit”
Bobby gave us all a sense of pride

He’s being forced out, no loyalty
Decades of worship stop on a dime
But he won’t be replaced easily
They say it’s lights out for Bowden’s time

The second most winning One-A coach
One of just four in the Hall of Fame
Bows out humbly in two thousand nine
Tossed like pig skin to the Hall of Shame

But I’ll never forget Bowden’s name
The players will miss his leadership
Bobby deserves respectful tribute
Not mean quips shot from turn-coat fans’ hips

Friends, Coach Bowden has been my idol for years. He instilled spiritual values in his
players while coaching them to season after season wins. If this poem sounds "emotional,"
it's because his ousting makes me disgusted.

Southern Cooking

The South is best known for their Southern cooking, including some collard greens. All
Southern foods have been around since Abe Lincoln ended slavery for good and when
African-Americans have earned the right to vote. What's so great about southern cooking is
that everybody's eating a home-cooked meal, just like their moms used to make. There's lot
of Southern foods we all love: there's fried and barbecue chicken, some collard greens,
mac and cheese, candied yams, some corn bread, the works. When everybody's eating the food
from the South, it's like eating at a Southern buffet restaurant in Mobile, Alabama, on a
Sunday afternoon, and upon leaving church. And along with their food, they've got some
homemade lemonade, sweet iced tea, and other Southern drinks. Their food is going to wish
that these people would stay in the South for a long, long time. Come to think of it,
Southern cooking is as good as soul food that is made in the city of Atlanta, Georgia,
especially when they're eating some chicken and waffles, some chicken fried steak, and
shrimp and grits. Now how delicious is that? And everyone will be talking about the food
they've eaten and recommend their favorite Southern restaurants to their friends and
family members, even on holiday. Boy, are we going to have a Southern fest with our
favorite foods from the South, including some crawfish, some barbecue ribs, hot water corn
bread, every piece of food everyone can think of. And after this Southern fest is done at
the end of the day, we'll be wanting some more of that Southern cooking.

New Orleans, Louisiana: Aka the Big Easy

What's go great about New Orleans, Louisiana, is that of its jazz music and its voodoo culture. The city has been known as "The Big Easy" since the 1800s. It seems that all of the tourists from across the United States have considered New Orleans their favorite vacation spot. There's always a Mardi Gras every day, we've got people throwing beads at each other, jazz musicians playing their instruments (the saxophones, trumpets, etc.), and people dress in costumes every single day. But what's so great about New Orleans, Louisiana, most of all is that when spring breakers come to the city for spring break, even when they're still going to college. Everybody knows that the Big Easy is also known for its Cajun cooking, especially when the chefs are known for making a lot of jambalaya, gumbo, and a lot of Cajun foods. And what's so great about New Orleans, Louisiana, is when MTV was there, especially when the MTV network executives had been recording episodes of "The Real World:" one back in 2000, the other was back in 2010. New Orleans, Louisiana, is the strongest city in America, even though it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina back in August 2005. But the famous street best known by New Orleans, Louisiana, most of all is the French Quarter and and one of New Orleans' favorite landmarks is the St. Louis Cathedral. And the New Orleans Arena and the Louisiana Superdome are home to the New Orleans Hornets (NBA-National Basketball Association) and the New Orleans Saints (NFL-National football League). Even the late Louis Armstrong was from the city. Well, I hope to go to New Orleans, Louisiana, one day. And if the City of New Orleans were to stay on the map for a long time, it's going to be like a Mardi Gras on a Saturday night and Fat Tuesday in the afternoon.

 Jesus is the only way
 For salvation any day
He can forgive all your sin
 If only you believe
 Salvation you'll receive
A new life you can begin
 Jesus can make you brand-new
You can give Satan his due
And in Jesus' name you can win.

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV)

-“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (NIV)

- Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer
Romans 12: 12 ( NIV )

-The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
 Exodus 14: 13 ( NIV )

~Author's Notes:

The Balassi Stanza is a form or style attributed to Bálint Balassi (1554-1594) who is probably Hungary's best known Renaissance poet. His work included poetry about his battles with the Turks and his love poems to a woman he called Julia. His poetry was known for the richness of its forms and was a blend of Turkish, Polish and Hungarian folk poetry.

This form or style may be presented as a three-line stanza too.

William Shatner

William Shatner (Captain Kirk),
Best known for his acting work,
In music he would speak the song,
Resulting in a say-along.

Country Clubs

Country clubs are best known for their golf courses, tennis courts, and lobbies. They've
been a part of the lives of all wealthy people for some time to come. It seems that
everybody wants a piece of the good-life pie. When he or she's going to one of the real
country clubs, it's like going for a boat ride on a yacht in Miami Beach, Florida. It's
also as if he or she's living the rich life. It's the time of the year for then people are
going to a lot of country clubs for brunch, to play golf, to play tennis, or going to one
of the fitness centers for daily exercises. going to country clubs is also considered a
social gathering, or better yet, an intimate get together. This seems very interesting.
I'm hoping to work for one of the country clubs, making a lot of real money. I might even
interact with all of the country club members and my would-be co-workers, too. I ever
heard that a lot of people, who are working for a lot of corporate companies, are meeting
at a lot of country clubs every single day, especially when they're talking about the
company's budget and whatnot. I'm hoping that the middle class citizens become members of
every country club in the United States of America without the club members ever judging
other people. And without country clubs, there wouldn't be any caviar or golf players or
whatever.
