I Am a Starling

I am part of a display team
we don't practice, we all just know
to twist and turn together,
as we put on our aerobatic show.

This display is called a murmuration
the visual delight, showing no fear.
The oohs and aahs of the watchers
as the birds shows you autumn is here

We are noisy birds
seemingly never alone
our green brown plumage
with buff spots we call our own

I am a gregarious bird
I squawk and quarrel all day,
can mimic about twenty birds
like a nightingale they say

If you have a nest box I will gladly stay
you being around won't worry me,
in it my four blue eggs I will lay
soon the youngsters will fly free.

I might be a noisy neighbour
yet no garden is alive without me.
The Robin is pretty but a fighter
blue ****,blackbirds sparrows you'll see.

So gardeners when you plant up your flowers
sow your lawns and baskets you hang.
Remember to also put up a feeding table
put out seeds for the starlings that sing.

Penny For the Guy

Penny for the guy

C’mon mister give us a penny for the guy
This little ragamuffin asked with sad eyes brimming
Need the money to buy food she said with a cry
We are poor mister tearful eyes still streaming

Overhead great sparking rockets fly,
The girls guy looked sad and cold
C'mon mister a penny for the guy
She shouted as the oohs and aahs echoed around

Great Catherine wheels spun round and round
Sending sparks far and wide, in a colourful array
The smell of hot chestnuts making us drool
November the 5th is a fine fun day

Then through the smoke of the bonfire
Enjoying the fun sparkler in hand …. I saw
A cracker jack was lit by the sad guy
He jumped so high, ran, staying still no more

The guy she pushed for many a night
Was her brother who had been bribed to stay still
He tried but was the fright of the cracker jack
that made him jump and run up the hill.

Those 'Rewarding' Comments

There is no point
If you have ‘been there, done that’
Unless you announce so loudly
On social sites
Show the proof of
The ‘Happy Family’ moments
You see, enjoying those moments
At that very instance
Is secondary
It is all about looking ahead
Thinking of the future
And this is just the beginning
Because now you
Have to check, every now and then
Those comments
Of your friends
Their mushy remarks
‘Oohs’ and ‘Aahs’
Literally dripping their love for you
These bring back the twinkle in your
Sleep deprived eyes
And instantly uplift
Your travel weary selves
If you do not get a response
From someone specific
And you want to know
Whether he is dead or alive
All you have to do is
‘Poke’ him
His reaction, a ‘thumbs up’ will
Give you the same satisfaction
As a complete meal on a hungry stomach
And your daughter will tell you
‘Now, it has all been worth it’
Your ‘Thank you’ replies
To hundreds such comments
Are bound to keep you busy
For weeks to come
So much for our craving
For some ‘social recognition’
If not in the real world
Then at least in the virtual one
Where no great achievements
Are needed to get those
‘Rewarding’ comments

Premium Member Mom's Old Iron Skillet

The skillet hung near the old wood-burning kitchen stove.
Aside from her family, Mom considered it a special trove.
With that blackened old pan she prepared delicious repasts,
That in my judicious opinion will ne'er be surpassed!

Ah, just to recall the tasty grub stewed up in that old skillet!
How it tingled my taste buds just sliding down my gullet!
The chicken, steaks and chops in that old pan she did fry,
Evoked oohs and aahs and many a contented sigh!

She liberally dolloped lard in the pan 'til she had it just right,
Then concocted stews, soups and fried taters for our delight!
Mom was never concerned about such things as saturated fat,
Or life-threatening cholesterol and such things as that!

I suppose medicos today would have a conniption fit,
If they knew of the dietary sins my Mom did commit.
She must've done something right - her spouse lived past ninety-four.
Her kids outlived the odds, each reaching four score years or more!

Self-anointed wizards deem cast iron skillets detrimental to our health,
But I think they're just peddling new fads to add to their wealth!
My dear spouse uses her old iron skillet most every day.
I feel fit as a banjo regardless of what so-called experts may say!

Looked Like Speckledy Seed

The soil and my wallet was exceedingly poor
Like building a house without any door
My garden needs flowers but nothing would grow
People were coming to visit the show
So I planted some pips looked like speckeldy seed
Compliments were flying as did those trumpeting bells
Just when I thought that no one could tell
" Sir this is not Beaumontia Grandiflora"
Said a nerdy old lady surrounded in aura
White flowers enhanced by the backdrop of green
Stopped oohs and aahs and the Parisienne perfume
" ..best looking Jamestown weed that I have ever seen"
Stuck like syrup on my fingers somewhat in between

A Painful Halloween

The evening dark and foggy as the children in their guises
with Mums and Dads in tow; collecting trick or treat surprises.

My porch, festooned with spiders, ghosts and ugly-looking gore,
signalled that I’d welcome them if they knocked at my door.

I watched them move along my street, in groups of two’s and threes,
their lanterns lighting up the darkened branches of the trees.

Barking dogs and screeching cats, bemused at all the noise,
continued to berate these oddly scary girls and boys.

Stooping down to check that I had my supply of sweets,
I shivered as a gust of wind blew right along my street.

Catching me off guard, the bowl of sweeties overturned
and knocked a candle over, whereupon my hands were burned.

Not thinking of the consequences, I let out a yell -
just as a mini monster raised his hand to ring my bell.

And though not known for swearing, nonetheless I hurled a curse,
tearing clear throughout the sky - and mini monster dropped his purse.

The raucous discord, mini-monster, me, the dogs, the cats,
did not quite wake the dead ( but several witches lost their hats )

The flaming contents of my porch was tossed into the air,
but the children saw this only as a vain attempt to scare.

The parents, standing some way back, delighting at this sight,
could not see through the fog that my front porch was well alight.

As the monsters and the witches threw their arms up to the stars,
the Mums and Dads just clapped and chirped up with their ‘Oohs’ and ‘Aahs’

I grabbed a blanket, managing to kill the growing flames,
but the smoke cloud brought a new dimension to their creepy games.

My face now blackened, arms aloft and clearly in pain,
I must have looked horrendous - as the parents clapped again.

The kids, unfazed, picked up the smouldering treats and bagged them all
and through their plastic teeth declared: I was the scariest of all!

I Live In the Paragraph

in the middle of the atmosphere guided by the brightness of the fog that was and will be a
transformation assumes. The attraction of mental concepts consume the being who is armed
with a wonderful hyperdermic filled with scriptures imprint. Everlasting stains made and
confined to the lines of creative guidance. projective influence unfolds leaving the spine
chilled at the mad brilliance of thoughts un-leashed. The ending result of injection leads to
oohs, aahs, tears, smiles and beautiful migranes of astonishment. a flow is possesed as if
indulgence was beneath the oceans blanket. within the pupils the effect of potency can be
seen, the one behind it smirks at the steps closer to immortality. Waste not time with useless
delays, send the accolades, I live in the Paragraph.
The temperature drops and within the midst of the artic influence an extension of the hand is
revealed, with chilling details manuvers are set in motion as the un-thinkable is thought of
and created. Behold an alien tattooist bringing outer world concepts to life, or so it may
seem. conversations on clouds, tears bottled within the ocean, a promise of the dolphins
secret. Coincedences that are yet to exist, similiar to that of a god of sorts unto the
following. Relax and breathe as thy minds eye breeds intoxication like fantasies heated
within a spoon resulting in nouns that suffocate the lines, verbs that bite and amazing
sentences that may never end. thy soul is the literature, I am of the story and it is of me, in
honesty it must surely be known that, I live in the paragraph.

Serendipitous Smiles

as hot bronze skin meets the cool blue summer water oohs and aahs issue

Premium Member Swing, Sweet Child

Swing, sweet child
   Kick your legs high
Swing, sweet child
   Reach for the sky

The swing's your pendulum
   Gather momentum
The world's your proscenium
Elicit oohs and aahs from the plenum

Pull hard, sweet child, with all of your might
Extend your reach upward to maximum height
Rock the frame of the swing-set till the dusk of twilight
Your silhouette framed against newborn starlight

Your wondrous display of finesses linked with brawn
Has all those assembled cheering you on
As you soar over sandbox and adjacent green lawn
In your best party dress of pink lace chiffon ...

Swing, sweet child
   Kick your legs high
Swing, sweet child
   Reach for the sky

He Stops My Heart

He walked into my life and into my heart and marked his territory
And I had no options, no choice but just to accept
That somewhere out there
Under my nose existed someone
Who would care enough
To make me smile
Laugh my heart into a knot and soothe my soul
Put me to sleep by simply saying the word “sleep”
Sweep me off my feet literally
Have me gasping in amazement
Pleasant surprises
He wasn’t joking
Trips at night, back and forth and back again
I reflect and it moves me to tears
He stops my heart
He puts the smile on my face
When I have really bad days
When I’m really upset and the world is about to turn upside down
His voice, his presence, his anything and everything makes it all okay
Little did I know that my idle talk of “lets run off together” when I was stressed some years ago would mean oohs and aahs and wows and a painted smile across my face.

Rare animals to see;
that's the bait that draws me.

The zoo is amazing;
I spend hours just gazing.

And my heart skips a beat;
as oohs and aahs compete.

But a cage isn't home;
for creatures born to roam.

Premium Member A Thanksgiving Day

Mama's in the kitchen cooking up a storm,
Turkey's in the oven and the house is toasty warm.
Kids are running through the house playing with their toys;
Mama tells them "Keep it down! You're making too much noise."

Daddy's in the living room staying out of Mama's way.
He's waiting to watch the football games scheduled for today.
Grandma and Grandpa are now pulling in the drive,
And behind them all the other guests have arrived.

Hugs and kisses are dispersed - no one will be left out.
Family and friends gathering together is what Thanksgiving is about.
Oohs and aahs of appreciation echo amongst the guests,
At the heavenly aromas in the air from the food about to be blessed.

Holding hands around the table they bow their heads to pray,
Thanking God for His abundant blessings and for the food this day.
Each one takes their turn declaring what they are thankful for.
Hearts are full of love and cheer, who could ask for more?

Throwaway

She sits in a makeup prison of her own choosing,
mirroring her daytime as a domicile prima donna star
Always craving the wrong kind of attention,
refrigerated happiness is a guilty pleasure given
There’s always plenty of cash and calories to burn,
shopping is a showcase trophy wife’s diva freedom
Got a corporate husband who loves looking at his sexy spouse,
his upper management skills pays for the plush house,
and the other lavish accouterments
But she knows he lives for his business evening entertainment,
showing off his sensual marital partner to his clients
Hearing the oohs and the aahs
seems to always stroke his ego just right
Parading around in pricey cosmopolitan clothes,
she’s at her best putting on a good, private fashion show
Making the other women present envious ... though curious,
wondering how does she
keep that taut skin package wrapped tight with a bow
All the while having the money hounds tongues wagging,
as the champagne and business propositions flow
She has the key to the kingdom,
and she ain’t never gon throw it away
Age is her only enemy,
which she fights with the fierceness
of an Amazon warrior
The body in the mirror demands daily perfection,
but cosmetic coverups can only do so much
Her natural beauty’s gonna be a throwaway one day —
and when the sad reckoning comes,
divorce will be a legal wrinkle that can’t be airbrushed away
