The Real AI

Written By: D. Collins 6/6/25

Big men shivered when he got into the paint.
Knowing they're a victim of his vicious faints.
He had the meanest crossover anyone has ever seen.
Even Michael Jordan got postered on our T.V. screens.

He was a little man with the heart and will of a bull.
Made many so-called professionals look like a fool.
None of the NBA teams had an "answer" for him.
When we thought he wouldn't he'd flush it at the rim.

He made all big men respect and fear the little guy.
Often shaking their heads from a heavy dose of AI.
His mark on the game should stand out in our minds.
He was the best little, big man to play between the lines.

US Sports Report

When playing basketball
being tall is best it's thought
but that's not all
wearing saggy baggy shorts on the court
needs keen hand-eye coordination
plus being fleet of foot
and have no quibble with dunk or dribble
if through the hoop a Wilson you wish to put.
As for American football
boring from the sideline I find
it's more talk less action
namby-pamby as opposed to rugby
which is wilder less calmer
and without all the body armour
now there's a game with some traction.
America's pastime baseball
is another matter
whether pitcher or batter
with Rawlings or Slugger
when on the mound I have found
unlike soccer or rugger
before a ball the hurler throws
and the pitch is hit or caught with a mitt
first rearrange the private parts in public
twitch the cap and then spit.

Turning the Table

Trailing, doubts arise,
Then a spark, the tide will turn,
New lead takes the court.

Basketball Blitzkrieg

Fast break, a blur,
Points rain down, a sudden storm,
Net sings, game over.

Untimely was Hamilton Hicks
In making his basketball picks.
He knew it all well,
How each bracket fell,
But always too late with his clicks.

Basketball Match

Lift voice on air
Yell last hurrahs
Ball not come in.

Powerless jump
Tall guy rebound
Ball on long hand.

Point guard dribble
Pair by pair watch
Clock is ticking.

Score tied match
Desperate move
One sunk the three.

Hakeem the dream

Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon,
Had moves defenders would frown upon.
From Lagos to Texas, he rose to fame,
And left rivals grasping in shame.

As "Little Moses," they called his name,
In Houston, he rose to acclaim.
He ruled with finesse,
Brought gold to the press,
And walked in the halls of great fame.

Till today, he's a legend of the game,
And basketball players still honour his name.
One of the greatest, his legacy thrives,
Still sharing his wisdom in many lives.

Keeping Score

The bartender strolls from one
end of the counter to the other.
She makes small talk with regulars
who watch NFL games on screens
and a college basketball game
plays on another.
For each touchdown scored
mugs are raised.
Fans analyze every run and play
and the day unfolds.
while the bartender pours beers.
She says her boyfriend and dog
are at home.
A man at the end of the bar
pays his tab.
A woman from public housing
pushes her walker and sits
in their midst.
She’s come in to watch Cubs games
and she’s here again
although baseball season is over.

Yao Ming

Around his height
Bigger he is
Sweeter he be.

A Little Basketball

I watched a little basketball
To cheer the U.S.A.,
Though it’s a sport I’d never follow
Any other day.

I also caught some swimmers
Wit their strokes in perfect form,
Racing in their lanes in record time,
As if that were the norm.

Now I’m waiting for the gymnasts,
With their super-human feats,
Hoping when the golds are given,
There might be a few repeats.

The Olympics gives us glimpses
Into how, when one’s obsessed,
That results in a performance
Leaving everyone impressed.

Premium MemberDefining Certain Sports

  Basketball's considered a 'contact sport'
Football is a 'sport of collision'

  Hunting animals 'for sport'
                                   ~ purely derision

Premium MemberIowa Girls Basketball Is Serious

In the state of Iowa girls basketball is the biggest sport.
Bigger than golf, football, baseball or any other that you’d sort.
We are basketball players before we settle down, an Amazon wife said.
And sometimes a player afterwards, said her son, Leland Lee Ted.

His mama scoffs at his reply, she beats him at horse after school.
Never letting up a bit, winning is the girls’ basketball creed and rule.
Husband will not play her, he has seen her tough it out since she was ten.
The one thing that she insists on doing is always taking the big win.

Premium MemberOur Games Define Us

Our games define us, who we are
by which ones are most popular

First comes football, all blood and gore*
#1 with those who long for war

Then there's basketball, the 'city game'
for ghetto-dwellers, a path to fame

  Last and least, poor tennis
    long the 'gentleman's game'

  Of late reduced to barbarism
grunts and shouts ~ through a racial prism

Five On the Floor

Five on the floor, five and more
And they're dancing to the show
One and done, over and won
As the march to madness goes

Game on, and the game is for
Five on the floor, five and more
Taking pains to stay in range
For the game lives in the score

Forty to go, five or more
For the madness knows the score
Five on the floor, five and more
Leaving it all on the floor

Now it’s done, and one moves on
And the one that plays no more
Breaks our hearts, the madness roars
Five on the floor, five and more

Three-Point Shot

Three Point Shot

You reach the line, an almost perfect semicircle, racing from one side of the court to the other, avoiding the hoop In a soft wide arc, Your shoes biting deep into the floor, As you come to a halt, Announcing it to the world with a short, piercing squeak Tearing through the atmosphere, to the stands With the ball nestled in your hands, just yearning to take flight, You rise, knowing that your defenders can’t reach you Everything but the ball and hoop a distant memory Your hands travel through the same motions you know so well, Knowing, even before the ball leaves your grasp, you’ve already won, This time You finally release the ball, with a quick, decisive snap of the wrist Sending it arcing through the air with pinpoint accuracy, Racing towards the net

Silence, and then, swish
Crisp, clear as a spring morning
Play continues on
