When did you write your first poem?

Blog Posted by Sally Eslinger: 6/15/2022 5:10:00 AM

How old were you when you wrote your first poem?  Did you show it to family or friends?

How did they react?  Did you feel encouraged as a poet/writer?

This is a poll for research for a project of mine.

Con't - Throughout my poems, there's music of some sort in them, but not them all. My kids enjoy what I wrote, some close friends, but colleagues at my new employment have read more than any others previously. Do I feel encouraged presently, more than I have than the previous 5 - 6 years as we've been bringing up our Son, Jamie. PS, My wife and I - 'Olive Eloisa Guillermo' met on PS, and we met in Manila 2015, and married in 2016 <3 nice Blog, would love to see it's end project, James xx

Like Jan, I didn't like poetry when young, although I loved listening to lyrics of the music I grew up with. I didn't start writing until 2009 when feeling a little down in life, I wrote 'The Clever Ape to the Horrible Human' of which is on PS. It was written whilst listening to 'Pink Floyd's' track 'Keep Talking' of which 'Stephen Hawking' appeared to narrate a few words, and to date I've written nearly 2300 poems, all because of life's circumstance and my love for Music.

HI Sally, I think I wrote my first poem when I was 13, it was a tribute to my mother, and she's kept it all these years so that means so much to me. I actually stopped writing in my mid twenties, and didn't return to poetry until I found this site in 2018, and it's really helped me blossom as a writer, I feel so blessed to be a part of this remarkable group~

Sally, my first poem was printed in crayon, because I could not write yet, my family always encouraged me to be a writer, they saw the seed in me growing, Grandma had been the family story teller, so I sort of inherited story telling from her. I like to say she gave me the gift of words. I wrote poems about flowers, my pets, friends, family etc, but my first real poem was written on the day my father died, that day I found my poetic voice and the rest is history as they say, I feel blessed that I found Poetry Soup, to write and share my poems, blessings ~Constance

I was fourteen and one day at school the teacher told us we were going to write an anthology of verse. Had never thought about writing poetry before, the first thing we had to do was design our book cover, then the poetry began. To my surprise I found I enjoyed writing and still have my little book of poems to this day sixty years later. That was how my poetry journey began. I often get asked to write for birthdays, weddings and funerals for which I am always happy to oblige… Belle

I wrote my first song lyrics when I was 17. I had 3 friends at the time who were learning to write songs, so we all kind of learned together and shared with each other. I had a rhyming dictionary which I thought was very helpful, but my first critique came from one of my songwriter friends, "too many rhymes", haha. I got over it and kept writing. I started writing poetry 3 years later in a creative writing class in college.

Probably since early school days … then it kind of hibernated (as I got busy with college, career and family), before it’s inevitable resurrection!

I remember that first poem. It took me all day to write. I took a pen to a greeting card and wrote to my future wife. She was Yale and I was high school and I was overwhelmed with her intelligence and everything about her. So I had to impress her with a poem. I wrote spontaneous and without pretense. That is me. One would think a Cupid arrow type poem would be the best approach and bingo. But instead I wrote about how a den of baby rabbits met their mortality by a wily fox. It turned out to be a hit with her and subsequent we bonded from there. Thank you Sally for the blog and reading.

I was twelve and in middle school when I wrote a small piece to impress a girl. First, I read it aloud to my friends in the restroom, then they laughed and told me to flush it because it didn't sound like I had written it. Same on the baseball field where the guys also had laughed crying, "Foul," they believe that I had one of my older siblings write it for me. All in all, she did like it, so I kept writing more but I sadly learned that she liked the poems more than she'd liked me. In the end, I went with her BFF, at that time, who was always an earshot away. Hoping I am that me whom others agree, Sally, and with a heart-filled thanks my friend, Aloha~William

I created my first poem when I lived in Wiarton. This is were I learned to create poetry. I created many poems there. I learned to create poetry at the Literacy Center. After I created the poem I had to read it out loud.

Sally, I'm not sure, but it would have been when I was in elementary school. I've always been a writer. I doubt that I showed it to anyone. Perhaps a teacher. I took a poetry class in college and the professor encouraged us to submit our work to magazines and journals. She told me to "keep your day job," but I had a poem in Christian Century before the class ended.
