Puublishing HELP NEEDED

Blog Posted by Sally Eslinger: 7/31/2025 5:46:00 AM

So after Many years (decades) I decided last week that I want to have a few of my works published in print mags and newspapers.  Thus I googled the various sites to check their Submission Guidelines and SMACK! every one said  no previously published wors would be considered, incuding even on a personal website.  Yikes!  This includes, say, Facebook.and PoetrySoup!  Thus, dear sister & brother poets, 99.7% of everything I've written since 2019!
Not everyone reads on-line creative writing, just as not everyone reads small press mag collections.  I'd like to try submitting to smalll press, which published me in the '80's - '90's.  Poetry Magazine (chicago) says "No previously published," as does the N Y Times.  NY audience differs from calif audience.  Presbyterian audience differs from Catholic.  The same guideline, of course, applies to the on-line form of all print publications.  WHAT IS DONE ABOUT THIS?  Help please!

it's the same when entering 'professional' comps, they always stipulate poems mustn't be previously published on a website, so strictly speaking you shouldn't use them, but i've removed some of mine to use before..bear in mind although they disappear from this site there's still a trail on the internet to show they've been on here

It's so unfair to consider our poems here as "published." I have always hated that. I am in your same position, so I stopped sending things in for publication years ago. Anyway, it's not like many people are subscribing to poetry magazines these days. I used to do a lot of them before 2010. They were a lot of fun, but I was never in too many that had really strict submission rules. Most of them were for fun, but the one put out by Shadowpoetry.com was very inclusive. Too bad that magazine ShadowInk went away along with the website. If I were you, I'd follow Rob's advice.

Very selfish for them to demand they be the only ones.

I would just remove the poems you are submitting for publication from the site.

What they don't know won't hurt them.
