The Address of Poetry

Blog by Sally Young Eslinger ******
My Declaration of Dependence on the Creative Arts within my being, as so given, even through genetics, to that realm within, where, I believe, Poetry (with all the Inspired arts) rests twin to the soul —

in the hands of God Our Father, the catalyst of inspiration; of our need to perceive with circumspection — of our thoughts, hearts, and souls;

who graces us with the perseverance to find our inner Voices and to create, to speak in various genres;

giving us faithful appreciation of our imaginations and journeying works.  We devote our thoughts; our Voices and pens; all our expressions and perceptions to the elevation of our Art  — to those goals so endowed at our conception.

I am dedicated as a Christian poet, but this blog is about Poetry, not religion.  When Poetry falls integral to beliefs, please do elaborate, as I will.  Believing in origins of all sorts, being part of the  All is what we are.  Our Lord’s mansion has many rooms...

I have put great thought into the questions of our poems’ existence.  Sometimes they come forth with such insistence it is astounding.  I might seem to sit back and take dictation.  I have quotes from many poets saying similar feelings.
.From where does it seem your poems come?

I too am at best an incidental poet. Often, it's a phrase that comes while asleep of walking with the dog, which if I jot it down can them be worked into a poem Last month, I took part in the November chapbook daily prompts did prompt some works. Then too recent political events have provided impetus to some of my rants which may then be shoehorned into a blitz or something along those lines.

1st reply eaten, so try again: I’m not sure Inspired doesn’t bring the spurring catalysts of the incidental? If we are poets who don’t sit at the ARX’d hour to writeit make 4 Incidental = most poems?

Sally, great blog, I have been writing since a young girl, silly little girl scribbles in time became poems from my heart and soul, the seed of a poet was growing within me all my life it seems, it is like breathing for me, I just write, I let my pen take over and take me where it will _Constance

I have never considered myself a poet really, more a sort of word smith. But I agree with what you wrote. My declaration is from Wordsworth: the poem is emotion recollected in tranquillity. ~~

Nice, Victor! My emotions recollected turn all tranquilly to emotional stress. I find tranquility rules in other genres but poetry completed w/super use f language pi’s most satisfying.

Our talents we owe to our maker. As for my personal inspiration to write poety, mostly it comes from challenges, which is why I joined this group. The challenges permit me to take memories or to imagine things and then put them to words. I mean, once you've written hundreds of poems on the things that inspire you, where else do you have to go next? That is why I find challenges so necessary to me personally.

Hi! Was also thinking...What might you consider the difference between challenges versus catalysts to thought and/or emotion, like, say, a neighbor offers a big differing view about things?

Poetry comes from within-- oft from that guarded, hidden or sacred place in our souls. To compose and share poetry is both an offering and an act of bravery,, From that very reason many never dare to do so. To me it is the melding of soul , heart and mind-- giving an outlet to communicate with others. As the author intends it for good - so shall it be. If the author intends it for darker, self-serving purpose so shall it be. A true poet reveals so much of their true spirit in their poetry. On the whole it is a gift, a treasure, a true and great Art.. God bless..

Hi Robert! When young I dug so deepfor poetry, it hurt too much, I took to non-fic Now I’m braver, as u say, but 4 me, Poetry is meant to communicate. My family won’t read it.Despair! Why I doPS

I would say from the universal source - God The Father. A gift given to all of us, part of common grace, but even among those closest to him, only partially understood. Similar to most of us knowing 3 out of the 10, 11, 12+ dimensions. Most would say this gift is love, but it may be more than that, or it may be part of that, unsure, again, the dimension analogy. It is very powerful, it can bend time into a lens or into many mirrors, making memories real again, or merging them, etc. Awesome blog.

Rob!! You’ve touched s many branches of tree of this discussion! Touch is a sense. Why not composing is a dimension? Smell a sense. Poetry a dimension?I see Arts not simply talents & more/thoughts!

poetry rides the winds of vagrant imagination seeking an outlet...straining against the incumbency of fear, defying the strictures of the past...blossoming in the darkness of an unseen light....erupting in a volcano of emotion spilling out upon the naked page---or something like that

You can’t know the amount of thought you caused me here! You seem to say poetry has an autonomous being,going about separate from history, seeking light & a ready emotional outlet. Right?
