This Old Man . . . Did What?!!

Blog Posted by Kelly Crenshaw: 12/16/2015 10:27:00 AM

From 3 a m. Started not to post but someone needs to speak out against atrocities.
Insomnia and social media. Interesting mix sometimes.

Have you ever thought about how scary some nursery rhymes can be? Especially at 3 A M.

So ever since Sunday I've had the Barney song stuck in my head. It occurred to me suddenly that the tune to Barney is actually the same tune to "this ol man" nursery rhyme or kid song or whatever it is. So I thought of that.
The only line I can remember is "This ol man he played 3, he played knick knack on my knee, with a knick knack paddy whack give the dog a bone, this ol man came rolling home."
So why is there a song about a guy doing some absurd thing on my knee!? Why is he touching me there? He played what?! Where!? And we sang this song as kids??! Where are the parents in this twisted little macabre drama? Paddy whack? Huh? What's that even mean? I feel like I've been violated and didn't even know it? Give the dog a bone. That sounds innocent enough unless AC/DC is singing their version of it. Then it gets weird.
What's this ol man doing to children in this song? Has anyone ran his name? Background check please, on aisle 3?
He touches me again and he's gonna think rolling home. I'll roll him like a $2 wino. Now I'm mad. "This ol man" needs a restraining order. He's a freaking stalker. My thumb? My shoe? My knee? My door? My hive? Huh? He touched my hives? That's sick. My gate? My spine? My chin? Keep this weird maniac away from children!! Parents! What were you thinking, and why did you sing this song to me as a child? No wonder I'm so odd!!!

I remember my dad singing a campfire song, while playing his guitar, and I would later cry in my sleeping bag during the night about how sad the lyrics were. Has anyone every heard "Babes In The Woods".. about two babies wandering off, and dying in the woods, while robins left strawberry leaves on their graves! My dad meant well, but those old folk tales could give children nightmares!!
