"THERE ARE CEMETERIES THAT ARE LONELY"

Blog Posted by Nette Onclaud: 6/12/2015 4:02:00 AM

‘There are cemeteries that are lonely,
graves full of bones that do not make a sound,
the heart moving through a tunnel,
in it darkness, darkness, darkness,
like a shipwreck we die going into ourselves,
as though we were drowning inside our hearts,
as though we lived falling out of the skin into the soul.’

--excerpt from Pablo Neruda’s ‘Only Death’

my, my…of all the contests I had handled using  various quotes or  visuals , poets who joined “ Four Lines Only “ mostly chose the image which  symbolized death( about 23-24 entries!) .. this made me wonder if it was the picture or the topic which created such range of images…

it was one of the hardest to judge!.. you all raised the roof though some missed the syll count.. others  did not fulfill the rules like mention of name, visual number , criteria for judging,  and a few just needed to weave a singular thought with their beautiful lines…

i had good friends who didn’t place, but I know you won’t take this against me  ;) … please find time to read the poems for some inspiration .. this is the longest winners ‘list  I had ever done so far!...all told, you are all winners to me!

special mention goes to the poet who wrote ‘The Light Of God’; seriously who are you?… a real-stand-out!... let’s give the winners and participants a big  round  of applause ; i am so proud of you, all !..  sweet congrats to all participants!... do jump in my new contest coming soon!

--------------

NOW, on the subject of death; I am now curious to know a public figure whose death affected you and made you really cry…  do share!

I just realized I never entered the poem I wrote for this contest! I wonder how many times I'm going to make this mistake? I'm laughing at and kicking myself...the death of Clarence Clemons really made me cry. I've seen him on stage so many times with the E Street band, it was like losing a friend. Hugs, Rhonda

A shout out to all the winners, and yes we did seem to be drawn to the same photo !! Thank you for the inspiration, dear Nette !! As for the impact of a death, I was young and impressionable, and so shocked when John Kennedy was killed, it seemed the world was coming to an end. I will never forget my emotions and deep sadness.

"Nette, glad to be part of your contest. The visual of the cemetery was striking. It reminded me of how Robin Williams just suddenly took off! All the best and thank you. "

I chose the cemetery photo because it immediately aroused my interest. There I had characters, a plot (no pun intended) the dark of night all laid out...perhaps others felt the same way. How often do we actually go to a cemetery? And never are we allowed in at night....

Judy, I felt this way too on seeing that picture. I grew up across the street from a very big cemetery, and DID go into it once in a while at night! We even played Hide n Seek in there. It was three blocks long and five blocks wide! a lot of places to hide. And kinda scary fun too (I am such a heathen)

I browsed through some poems which were phenomenal. To be on the list is humbling! Thank you. In retrospect, I feel the death of JKF still baffles me. Cheers!

Nette. I LOVED this contest. It definitely was the IMAGE that inspired those of us who wrote of the grave. Marvelous image to show. I really enjoyed seeing your entries and I bet I have already read many of the winners. Gosh, too many public figures have died in my life time. Of the most tragic for their age were Elvis, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawecett. I know there were many more that really got to me. But for some reason, those three come to my mind. Oh, and Robyn Willlams and some really young movie stars whose names have gone out of my head!!

Good grief, the question was about a "public figure" whose death affected you. Of course it is going to be media driven, Julia. Are you good friends with anyone really famous?

Be careful here - that can only be media driven as you didn't know her personally.
