YOUR FIRST POETRY CORNER

Blog Posted by Nette Onclaud: 8/29/2015 6:13:00 PM

a few years back, i was surfing the internet to research on my article for a local magazine... i was taken to a site which had many features including a sub-category on poetry.. curious, i took a peep and saw a lot of really amazing works...

since the poetry link  was not a main section of this site; the pieces were brief, like 10 lines max.. intuitively, i posted a few , and before i knew, i got responses and became friends with many contributors...

i learned how to enjoy short poetry ( which was unusual for me)... it was here that i was able to explore my  abstract and imagist styles as well...likewise, i even invited the group to try other themes...later, two of the poets from this site, beliefnet.com, designed their own poetry web which i joined on an experimental basis..

sadly, my buddies' site lived for only 4 months.. my only regret was that i didn't save my poems except for a few!.. for some reason, i was led to TPS by an acquaintance...the rest is history!

perhaps, my interest in short poems stemmed from my experinece on  this webpage... hence, i have been hosting challenges here that require  brevity with meaning/ impact...

while i'm on the subject of brief poems, allow me to congratulate all the entrants of my verso contest... how invigorating!...another spree is now on the run.. please jump in!

so, where was your first poetry site and how did it influence or stifle your muse?... ohh, do share!

huggs, everyone!

Hi Nette! My first has been PoetrySoup...landed here quite by accident while looking for something else. That was in February 2014. Since then I've been invited to a couple more sites. Enjoying this poetic experience and the many lovely friends, smiles and hugs :)

Well this is the first place I have been, and thanks to Seren Roberts, who kept at stubborn me to join here, and get back to writing. However I have to say its poets like you that made this my corner, you were one of the first poets I read here, along with David Williams and a few others, and well how could anyone wish to leave after that? :)

Hi Nette, i've never been on any other social media site and only arrived on this one by accident. I was looking for an old poem I'd read years before and just kept clicking on anything that said poetry. I was clicking down list after list and must have visited this site several times before realising there were other people here lol. More clicking away before discovering they were posting their work. I decided to have a go. So glad I did, Ive met some truly wonderful and talented people. Take care, Richard

nette my first poetry site was yahoo answers poetry, what those on it called yap.I was on it for 5 or 6 years until I found out about poetry soup from one of the poets.I met a lot of really talented poets there but there were many on the site that were there to make rude comments, at times it got out of control.Yet for awhile it was a very interesting site, at one point 13 poets from the site each got 12 poems together and put them in a book we sold giving the profits to charity. It ran its course and started to become like a crazy village so I left.Glad I did and glad I found poetry soup.Where I met very good poets like yourself.

Poetrysoup was my first poetry corner about six years ago. Throughout these years I visited about eight other sites, but nothing seems to make me feel better than being here. I learned so much on this site, and I so love it here.

I was an off-on guest at gotpoetry which pushed me to bleed ink and call my muse at the deadliest hour. Nice place but quite demanding for a tyro like me. Poetry Soup was a surprise discovery and like Franco, I may not comment much as I am still testing my waters.

A big thank you for placing me in your contest, Nette. I came from a rather known site which I somewhat enjoyed for some months. Though it was a friendly neighborhood, the conditions were strict; we had to donate points to enter a contest ( points we got from comments, and entries won). I realized the rules were restrictive. Being in Poetry Soup now is more fun!

2) I would like to thank those who are patient with me as I don't comment a lot. Maybe I'll do that more often and become less shy. It's challenging enough to navigate this site. Best to you and all Soup poets!

i'm pretty sure we were all shy in the beginning, franco.. by sending comments to poets here, you will gain friends and feedback!.. glad you shared!

Good question, Nette. I am a reluctant poet as I am still finding my own style. My first encounter was through poetrycritical where I got a dose of valuable comments about my work on an irregular basis. The members here are nice but it got to a point where comments became sparse. A close friend who is into online poetry gave me a list of sites-- this being one of them. I was glad that greeters came around to welcome me. And a few would give suggestions via mail.

I think Magikalkingdom got kind of crazy after 2004. They started doing role playing, hiding out in enchanted forests with some kind of weird chat rooms for romance. Then eventually it shut down. So I went to Shadowpoetry.com with my mentor, Floria. Shadow closed down around the time a best friend of mine deserted me over a really stupid disagreement, and then I came here on the invite of Karen O'Leary, who has since jumped ship!! I imagine I will be here until I die since I have a lifetime membership!! I'm afraid to go elsewhere since this already takes too much of my time. ha! Thanks for sharing your lovely poetry tale. Your contests reflect your enchantment with short forms (Love them)

I LOVE this blog among other GREAT blogs up today!! Nette, before I came to Soup, I was very active at this place called magikalkingdom.com I believe they spelled it that odd way with two K's. Anyway, this is where I first learned to do challenge poems and to interact with other poets. the QUEEN of our magikalkingdom met a prince over there and I recall we were all so excited when they announced they were getting married. I still remember her name. It was Freya. Because I wrote a sonnet on her. At the time it was in my early internet days and my computer was SUPER SLOW, so it took me two hours to do what now takes me half that time to do here at Soup. I loved it there with my 1st mentor!

Poetry Soup was my first adventure in poetry, Nette ! Had no idea how much it would change my life when out of curiosity, I first stumbled upon this amazing world of poems, friendship and education in poetry. I hadn't put pen to my thoughts until coming here...and at that time, didn't have any previous web-site experience. I've learned a lot by your short-form contests. Learning to pare my words down to fewer, is a lesson I'm still working on. So thank for that !! :)
