My Biography is Coming Soon...I don't know  what to write in my biography.  6 years old.  Walking in the drizzling  rain.  Jumping from puddle to juicy  puddle. Finally, the CANDY STORE.  LEMME  GET some of  deezee  after I finished with my choices I gave Poncho 2 dollars.  Ok it was  1 dollar and plenty of coins.  Now I figured I had to put some candy to the side for my self.   I took four  Maryjanes  and stuffed  them deep into my pocket.  Then my pumpkin seeds went into my jacket pocket.  Running  back home. I hit every puddle I could hit.  We lived on the 4th floor. I had  3 siblings. I pressed the bell as though I was being chased.  Before I entered the  apartment I was  ambushed.  GIMME, GIMME VAL.,  HEGGIES DOWN  I said.   It means  don't  beg.   Oh,  Val  your  so  stingy.   I turned around , ok , you can have some footsie rolls.  I gave WANDA some footsie rolls.  Well.... After waking up out of the nightmare.  I became a 13 year old poet.  I wrote lyrics to songs.  Wasn't any good. Finally at  22 I wrote one poem that was satisfactory.  It was part of my manuscript.  I mailed a copy to a publishing company.  I'm sure they did not approve of it. They mailed me a , WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU LETTER.   This one poem I remembered :    A dimpled splash of gray on a fridges November MORNING.   I can't  recall the whole poem . That my story  as I grew up, I appreciated nature and words reading and writing  alot more.

When I initially joined PoetrySoup I was so naive.  I became disillusioned

Thinking I would write my best poems and I'd be within the ranks of Gwendolyn Brooks, EE CUMMINGS,  LANGSTON HUGHS.   Through the

Years I have learned that I would have to hire an agent which I can't

Afford.  If this part isn't  bad  enough here is  the icing on the cake.

Agents are very  UNAFFORDABLE.

ENOUGH TO DO ANYTHING.  So if you choose  this route but your   Book

Doesn't  sell.   Then this means you sold your soul  for an UNATTAINABLE  DREAM  OR PIPE DREAM.  SO I'VE  DECIDED THAT POETRY IS  ONLY A HOBBY.   See you around the internet  you gifted souls.

For many poets, fame came post humously. It is a world view that expressed at the right time appeals to the zeitgeist. Doesn’t seem to be something we can control. We write what is in our soul because we are moved and if it moves others in the same way that is where appreciation kicks in. I find poetry also is a lot of work on top of inspiration. Good Luck in your endeavors. Agnes gave good advice if being published is your goal.

Also, agents do not usually take on poetry because it does not pay. Often, book contracts for poetry are awarded as a prize for a competition; you submit a manuscript, and if it wins, they publish the book.

"So I've decided that poetry is only a hobby". I am not sure that has anything to do with publishing. Even published poets cannot live on their poetry; with extremely few exceptions they all have day jobs. Sometimes the jobs are related to writing and come about through their poetry success, but often they are completely unrelated. William Carlos Williams was a doctor. Frank O'Hara was a museum curator. Whether poetry is a "hobby" or a defining life purpose that consumes the time that is left after earning your paycheck is a question of mindset.

You should contact Cyndi MacMillan, she is continually getting published in different journals, maybe she can give you some advice, and encouragement. Maybe you won't publish a book, but if you get some of your work published in journals, that might be nice, right? If not, at least poetry is a nice hobby. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I wish you well.

I call it being dropped on your head. Because when the Publisher is done, you remain with the task of promoting and selling your book, just like those who've self published!!!! Some may use traditional publishing for accreditation for something bigger. I love to just write without any of that in mind. If it comes looking for me, it'll catch me rehearsing. I've been approached twice in the Soup about being published. I don't think I'm ready. Love the blog!

In the end you're right. I just hate to see people being taken advantage of. It's kind of like these silly contests on PS. Some poets take them seriously and let it go to their heads. Some of the sponsors can't spell turpentine lol. But again, to each his own

I say, do whatever it is that makes you happy. It can be published in the Soup, traditional or self, posted on video, or on anyone's favorite corner, just do you with a will to improve.

Traditional or self publication isn't moving any units. Personal happiness may be the goal for those who've chosen self pub. I have talked to a publisher or two, and you're right about them digging deep down in shallow/healthy pockets. So, what's the plan J Morn?

I didn't answer your question succinctly, I would never recommend self-publishing unless you use a minimal cost service. Even then the book is likely to go nowhere

I've done a lot of reading on the subect. Like the Brookmeister I too was naive when I first started writing. The best advice is this: if you are truly talented and market yourself well you will get noticed... in time. Ps. Brook, agents work on commission only, so submit, submit, submit. And polish up your writing. Your blog reflects certain weaknesses. I say this with kindness

What is it that you will not recommend, J Morning? Publication or self published...

And lined the pockets of greedy ones who don't give a rat's patooty about the success of your book. I don't recommend it keefer

I favor self publication, although I heard someone say the real literary world would not consider it a book. I think, if it has cover and you're happy with it, It is a book. You've made your dream a reality!
