After the Floods

After the floods,
We were left with nothing,
Our homes lay in ruins,
All we had gone leaving us torn.

It was an unprecedented downpour,
Twilight’s gift to us,
Spring was in full swing,
The water level rose unabatedly.

Everything we had worked for all taken by the floods,
Everything we had laboured for was damaged by the floods,
Our town stood in the shadow,
Our homes were a torturing silence.

Days after the floods,
We strengthened our feeble hands,
We invigorated our weary minds,
We arose to bring back what had gone to the deep.

Premium MemberLanguish

The cry of the cockerel before dawn,
The overalls she wears are all torn.

The weight of the hay bale,
The sound of the crow’s wail.

The sight of another fence down,
Only 4 eggs today Mother will frown.

The cat giving birth to yet another litter.
Taste of the poor, sick cow’s milk is bitter.

The well’s water level is very low.
Grass round the house needs a mow.

Sheep in back pasture need to be hand fed.
Mice yesterday got into the bread.

Vegetable patch plants are growing so slow.
There's a dance on Friday don’t you know.

Can’t get the knots out of her long hair,
Can’t go to the dance, has nothing to wear.

All this adds plenty to her mental anguish,
Guess she will just stay here and languish.

Premium MemberGhosts In the Rill

The level of the stinky dirty water
Of the creek running near my house
Not falling this year.

In this dry season,
Water not falling from the taps,
the rivers became lean.

Its course somewhere encroached upon
Protests have
not heard, non willing to stop
Earth filled and fenced .

And in the dirty rill
Its water level rather rising
I saw them as ghosts haunting.

More they will haunt when rain comes.
Then the soothing sound of the rain
Will be terrifying to our minds.

Watching the vast ocean
Water level go up
Where tidal force comes in
Weather change or the moon
Without rain no rich crops
Wonder what we would do
Will our bodies hold up?

The Rise and Fall of Empires

An empire rises,
When the trees are in their prime,
Until axes can be heard ringing all the time,
And the waters start to rise above the plimsoll line

An empire dies,
When the old men of the forest,
Are cut down with the rest,
Leaving the sun to do the rest.

When the sun has done its job,
And the water level drops,
Enough to see the mountain tops,
Up another forest pops.

I hope the next time an empire rises,
And before the sound of axes becomes too loud,
The people will think it sound,
To keep a few trees around.

Of course a sun hat or two,
May be needed,
So planting of trees between axe strokes is not impeded,
By Sunstroke that has gone unheeded.

Experiment With Boiling Water

EXPERIMENT WITH BOILING WATER

Let your dubious interest in science not diminish;
Just watch the water-boil process from start to finish.
Gas flame is lit and well-adjusted:
As a scientist you're hot as mustard.
See the condensation on glass above water level ?
Soon you’ll have covered base of glass kettle
With the small bubbles of trapped steam you distended.
They became lines of moving bubbles and ascended
Like watery snakes looking for their surface goal
And hissing as they failed to find it in shoals.
Now they’ll rise ever more frequently, ever faster -
The rate is chosen by the experiment master.
The slight hisses become rumbles
Kettle rattle loudens as your gas flame tumbles.
Space above water level fills with steam -
The boiling makes scientist-eyes gleam.
A whistle treble starts to tremble
Then, gaining courage, it will soon resemble
The olden-days police summons pitch
Of ultra-high G or A-sharp, very rich.
I should stop now before I have trouble with the law
Of physics – for the water boiled away as we saw:
And the kettle dried out.
The experiment was over, we had left no doubt.

Premium MemberKey To Success Fable

A crow was tired flying the whole day
in the scorching summer sky of parched May,
searching relentless for some food,
became thirsty to the bone like a log of dry wood.

On the flight back to the distant nest,
through the shades of falling dusk to take rest,
it spotted a pitcher lying beneath a barren tree,
at its bottom a little trace of water it could see.

It thrust the seeking beak deep within downward,
but couldn’t reach the water even trying hard,
and was about to give up for it was getting dark,
when it was struck by the flash of an idea spark.

It dropped small stones in the pitcher one by one,
didn’t stop for a while until the work was done,
for the water level slowly started to rise high,
and it quenched the thirst with a satisfied sigh.

"Persistence is the key to success, come what may,
out of any problem there’s always a way".

Climate Change

Climate Change

Why is our climate going so bad?
It is what we are doing to the atmosphere that makes it so sad?

There has to be a special balance in the air
Of what we call "green house gases" that we must be aware.

They regulate our temperature, water vapor, and weather, too.
And there are others I just mentioned a few.

First is carbon dioxide in a ring our earth like a bowl.
Comes mainly from burning gas and coal.

This traps the sun's heat which melts our glaciers and warms the seas
That raises the water level and sends hurricanes beyond level three.

Thankfully, the Amazon rain forest absorbs lots of that gas
But we are cutting down the forest - how long can it last?

Secondly, smoldering coal produces methane gases
Posing health risks and other disasters.

Thirdly, our agricultural operations send nitrous oxide gases into the air
Something you would not want to breath anywhere.

Lastly, our synthetic compounds thins the ozone layer
That lets more sun heat through that barrier.

Scientists say if the rise in heat does not change by 2036
It will be to late to get it fixed.

Premium MemberAt the Millpond

The millwheel will not turn again till spring
for Winter’s icy cold grip holds it firm.
She squeezes it like Her private plaything,
though Her crushing power is but short-term.

As shorter days subtly lengthened; the sun
slowly began to liquefy the ice.
And the waterwheel shook, and almost spun,
while the miller posted his asking price.

Whispers ran through the town from door to door,
the ice is breaking up at the millpond.
And housewives could soon buy flour once more,
for each village, and its mill shared a bond.

The millwheel shimmies free from Winter’s grip,
shuddering as the water level peaks.
And as pressure increases drip by drip,
the pond ice melts, and the wooden wheel creaks.

When the Storm Blows

The best weather

After a cold, dehydrated winter spring was declared
It made its entrance with torrential rain and thunder,
And so the bad weather has continues
In a way, it is not bad weather the land was parched
And the water level in dams dangerously low
For us people of the land, we know it is unpleasant but we
Also, know without rain the summer sun would burn
Everything to cinders, which would give temporary happiness
For the tourists but leave the country in ruin
