OLD BONES UNBROKEN
In my later years I’ve come to believe
Living long does not determine the depth of a life lived
As lives and love stem from a special nodule in a person’s heart
A connection established a long, long time ago
A time when we were tiny, small varmints, mammals
I find my old age creeping around me relentlessly
Wrapping me in loneliness in my hours of consternation
Seeking the youth I royally misspent with gusto
I had fun
Like any kid I wallowed in the gaiety of the day as long as I could
I played like a Banshee high on donkey dung
I played taking care I didn’t hurt myself much
Aged fossil bones are thankful when the body is respected in youth
Old bones seek happy as the old body seeks rest
Joyful old bones seek painless old muscles
Our old exhausted minds welcome less strain on our bodies
Like a nun who prays to the four winds
For safe passage through the hinterlands of painful oblivion
Old age welcomes the body when it escapes broken bones.

Comes the serpent in splendid garments
Silky satins with purest white tatted laces
Most deceptive of all Satan’s devilish varmints
How we welcome his warm tender embraces,
Sometimes taking us on a most enjoyable trip
And we go along for those pleasures we crave
But remember he doesn’t shoot from the hip
And before we know it, he will a name engrave,
Claiming for his nefarious purposes intentional
Yes, all seems well on the surface as we thrive
Sometimes quite wonderfully, even sensational
But then a time comes when we take a nosedive,
Hopefully we’ll awaken to the cause of our grief
Seeking out the values we had long cast aside
And come to that faith in God, a spiritual relief,
In peaceful grace and security from thereon abide.

Now that leaves blanket the earth
And the squirrels are scurrying
To store up for winter's dearth
Now that leaves blanket the earth
Value of tree nuts triple in worth
That's why the varmints are hurrying
Now that leaves blanket the earth
And the squirrels are scurrying.

Bugs Bunny
Was smart, witty and funny
His tag line was what’s up, doc
Rivals would just stare and gaulk
Yosemite Sam
Made bugs and his buddies scram
Dubbed them all as mere varmints
He had a keen eye to their footprints

On the dry Prairie and then Mississippi Valley, yahoo buckaroo;
I come out eating choking dust daily, yahoo;
While on the long open range;
This cattle drive I parade;
Moo-be then dar doggies;
Through open Plains and Gulfs in Valley range;
Yippee ki-yay, Yahoo buckaroo doggies;
Got a rope and a horse, hey flowing mange!
Also got a sixth barrel caliber Bang Bang git them bandits;
I ain't going to be in shooting unless it's in self-defense;
Because this keeps me saved me from them Outlaws those dirty varmints;
That corn whiskey on my breath;
I'm a self-proclaimed cowboy;
I'm not afraid of this life or death;
And one day I'm going to be a big-time Lariat Oh, boy;
Screaming yippee ki-yay Yahoo buckaroo wooh!
From the range to the rodeo this is where I'm going to go;
I am a cowboy

The man was angry, had been for a long while
Waiting for someone to get the brunt of it
Did not realize all he had to do was step into the light
Was fearful of it; had seen it several times. Scared to try.
The house began to deteriorate around his rage.
Depressed, he slept for many years.
The house was unrecognizable upon his return.
Mice and raccoons had taken over.
They did not scare easily which enraged him.
He figured out traps for them, but they never worked.
Because no longer of the earth, he was not supposed to be here.
An empath arrived on a Tuesday.
She began coming daily – fixing things, mending holes.
The varmints left, which made the man feel better.
He liked her at first but then she sensed him and began trying to counsel him.
That made him unbelievably angry. How dare she!
He began to plot her death.
He killed her over and over and over in her sleep.
She felt it too, because she was an empath.
She left on a Tuesday.
He never sent to the light.
And he is waiting for you.

When my well-fed cat dies will he go to heaven?
Will he make it in cat years to fifty-seven?
Or eighty-six or one hundred and five?
Just what is keeping this fat sassy tom alive?
Shark has a kill room around the back.
Has killed varmints from here to Hackensack.
Will he ever reach the Rainbow Bridge?
He annihilated my mean Aunt Midge.
Sure some do not think it was Shark my cat.
But he’s wearing her rings, so what about that?

ticks on my back
saying knock knock knock
no joke
wood ticks no doubt
deep woods varmints
burrowing in
biting me with gusto
heads buried beneath my skin
making me crazy
go get my Uzi,
my shotgun, my scalpel, my pen
I have a poem idea and it is a win.

variety of size, limbs
once helpless in the wind,
a haphazard torrent of leaves.
no pleasantries in rescind.
moss, plush with bouncy roots
tripartite surgery of bark,
sans clean cut.
ground level hallmark
apartments, at close inspection,
varmints inhabit an oak.
how do trees survive the dark
when susceptible to croak?
the yard with all its idiosyncrasies,
a social distancing playground
for a curious player of minecraft —
a five year old’s hardly earthbound.

but i wouldn’t fault you words spilling from a loose connection
your heart
a myriad of internal cuts and bruises
exposed wires tattered and frayed
i can hold such damage
with barely a touch
soothe the gnawing of varmints uninvited
be that handy little light
one carries to duel the dark

but i wouldn’t fault you words spilling from a loose connection
i forgive the negative
they are tied to your artistic temperament
your heart
translucent
exposes wires tattered and frayed
a myriad of internal cuts and bruises
i can hold such damage
with barely a touch
soothe the gnawing of varmints uninvited
draw out a collage of smiles
patiently waiting to adorn
the you i see
i can draw your laughter
deep and resounding
i can love you unconditionally
for better or for worse
be that handy little light
one carries to duel the dark

felony figs feigning
pulpy punctured probity
mystic mist moaning
purpled eyes receding
damped desire drooping
salient severity scrunching
two temerarious Varmints -
callous ensconced embroidery
skins sans salmagundi
lusty leery lurching -
atuned atmosphere aiding
cranky coup clustering
chaetophorous Chipmunk saw,
pronto pram's metamorphose.

Disarray? Me? My house? My family?
Thank you! Yes, we certainly have earned the title, the crown and the sash.
You apparently were let in by one of the carpet chewers?
The watch dog is pretty much a come-in-and-open-the-frig-dog
Furious barking ceases the second a stranger, robber, or lunatic enters the premises.
Disarray? My writing? My painting? My leatherwork?
Thank you! Did you look under the couch too while you were incessantly snooping?
You would have found varmints, toys, a hot glue gun, pot holder, and last year’s Christmas brownie.
Oh, you did not get that far?
Disarray? You have not seen anything.
Let me show you the attic, the basement, the shed, the garage, and my mind.
That is where the real disarray happens.
Insanity runs in my family,
I am proud to admit. Not everyone
can claim this but it would be futile for
us to deny it. The man with the axe?
Grandpa Zeke. He wants the refrigerator
opened too. He and the watch dog are watching
your every move now.
Choose wisely.

Where is Shark, the cat today?
In fields quite far away.
Catching field mice, unhappy prey.
Keeping other varmints at bay.
Have not seen him since last night.
Disappearance feels right.
Mighty hunter ever bright.
Happily brings kill to my sight.
Usually he knows when I am out.
Psychic link we have, no doubt.
Roaming in the woods there about
When he comes back I’ll give a shout.
Well here’s Shark Cat, at home now.
He has a critter I’ll allow.
Something small, not big like cow.
Shark’s hunting prowess is a wow.
Uh-oh. It is still wiggling….

I’ve come to rest my weary bones and eyes of sore
horses need a barn to sleep and travel no more
the carriage is dusty and leans and squeals
if I can only have a bed and a few hot meals.
I do not take for granted as I pay for my needs
I’ve ridden this way so long where ever it leads
my journey cannot stop for I still have a way to go
my worldly treasures I haul with carriage in tow.
Have defied other directions in life to avoid the wayside
kept many varmints away with a crack of my rawhide
free to roam, no place to call home, I am on my own
no letters to write, no thoughts to recite, no end in sight.
all roads may come to an end but I must plow through
to pave the way, enlightening others of what they must do,
to be gainful in life on must ride those long and dusty roads
which will lead to opportunities and lessen the loads.
we carry much on our back not just in the saddle
we may find ourselves on a raft without a paddle,
if we float we must have hope and find ways to cope
a new mode may await on a different road that you have not rode.
