Snow Globe

                              A whining wind howls
                              Snowbirds scatter to thickets
                              Snow begins to fall.....

Cancun
Cancun and the sun
Escaping from Vancouver's cold.
They call us snowbirds
Flying south for the warmth.

But a week for us is enough.
You miss the cold after
Seven days of heat.

From 28 degrees
I'm back to minus five....

Mourning Commute
Mourning Commute

would be phoenixes
masquerade in Gotham
snowbirds alighting
outrunning the cock's crow
leaving their respective nests
cold
huddled in subterranean tunnels
awaiting the next iron worm
three piece sardines
breaststroking up steam
in relentless pursuit of false promises...

Premium Member Why Are There Snowbirds
Why do snowbirds do it?
Avoiding winter like that
No freezing rain
No winter mix
No icicles falling on your head from trees
No losing control of your car
While you slide into a forty-foot embankment.
I see you have never lived in Chicago in the winter
For your face shows me you have no idea what
I am talking about....

SNOWBIRD VARIATIONS

chirping merrily
black midst an awful whiteness
fat snowbirds seeding

once in a while
a twiggy branch comes alive
snowbird fluffing

lazy winter’s watch
overcoming tedium
suddenly – snowbirds

a beautiful frost
flaming red against the snow
winter cardinal

the frost coated limbs
winter’s cold magical scene
blackbirds brush the sky...

Ah Mikhail
Ah Mikhail, were you here to splash again with me
Through the mounds of marbles fragile white
And roll and scream delirious with childlike ecstasy
That leave uncounted the snowbirds late in flight.
Memory is a giant stain on the carpet of my mind
And the pain like footsteps pound it again and again
My son, my son, how noble now your deeds all shine
How mortal now my dreams, and life how vain....

When last the Autumn blanket crept
to seal the bed where summer slept,
its oak leaf fingers intertwined
and locked 'til springtime sets them free.
So from the winter's tempests flee
from waning days and clinging time
and loose its grip in solstice stare
- last glimmers of the sunset's glare.
The geese fly swiftly - cry in rhyme
as cold invades the season's tide
within the ebb where instinct rides
on wings of life to warmer climes....

ESCAPE OF SNOW Snow shivers on heavy branches. Lyrics of snowbirds awakens awe. Bent back of pines — tortuous cane. Wheelbarrow weighted down with snow. ~ After storm comes avalanches, Power outage and blackbird caw. Powder keg of snow from yonder pane. Eyes mesmerized ~ life travels slow. ~ For Winter, I hold… no disdain. This reprieve: there’s no grass to mow. 12/9/2017 Rimas Dissolutas Form

when florida got shy
when my river ran into your waterfall
startled egrets and alarmed herons
reached for the sky

the claws of surprised osprey let go
of wriggling fish

for a long moment
florida became a frozen lake

you could see the stunned faces
of stopped clocks
trapped beneath the ice

when we plunged
into each other unheeding
of time and place

plastic flamingos
and pink barbie dolls
flew away
in the wide open eyes
of passing snowbirds

Here I go!
Here I go!
Watch the leaves,
Watch the snow,
Look out, Tommy!
Look out, Tim!
Look at me
I'm Mr. Wind.

Hats are flying,
Scarves are whipping.
Children laughing,
Old folks slipping.
Snow flakes dancing
Through the trees
Kiss the lonely little leaves.

Snowbirds flying,
Snowflakes blow.
The little flowers
Sleep below.
Sparrows silent,
Skies are dark,
Hear me roaring
Through the park.
