By calm childhood's brook,
shafts of brash, slanting light
shone through a dewy mist.
From a stone, there I spied,
descending from a thread,
dawn's angel from the dark.

This road
does not lead to my home.
Do I ask the lake ?

Tonight, the moon
shows a wrinkled face

through venetian blinds
slanting beams of light peep in
where she sits alone
reminiscing in silence
hoping that the bell would ring

blue sky, dotted with white clouds
sun, in his last lap of race
slanting rays gleam in gold sheen
their beauty to evening they bestow

Your slanting smile
like a pendant-moon
ready to collapse
on pomegranates.

Monstrous, bug-eyed,
my pug will jump;
whenever, I touch
his snub-nose.

Death was sparring
after a brief encounter.
What was the need
for living more ?

I drift aloft with gossamer wings,
slowly slanting toward the moon,
beaming with its nimbus glow.
Like me, it seems to shift positions,
darting between forms and shadows,
darkened slopes and rounded hills.
Shimmering streams grow mute below us,
sending clear, sweet twinkles skyward—
forever gracing souls in flight.

by Maureen Staley Cary
When I hear that faint rumble, deep in the clouds,
The summer sky will darken, lead-gray
The rain will come in slanting sheets,
Forming mist as it hits hot, hard earth
The birds will retreat, like the ants,
But the earthworms will emerge from the softened soil,
Content in the break from August heat.

Huge blossoms perched in a crystal vase;
And how it sparkled!
While early evening sun came in slanting,
In intense burgundy golden rays, flaming.
Beauty blooms bounced at west window,
And colors were flashing!
In a summer turned hummer-honeybees.
Varicolored blooms grace evening- so new,
Just as pearls in green grass-morning dew!

I oiled the card of daily being
splashing the paint from glass; I pointed
slanting cheekbones of ocean streaming
on plate of jelly, I was joyed
to read the calls of some new lips
on tin fish scales; oh, it is cute,
But could you play Nocturne on ribs
of very noisy drainpipe flute?

Lyric
The Forever Bees
Spring passed without them…
Their forever hum of summer was silent;
no hopeful tending to timid crocus,
no ceaselessness in the heat of the coreopsis field,
none of their hurry in the lazy slanting of passing goldenrod afternoons.
The forever bees did not come this year…
Loveless, my neighbor’s zucchini did not bear.

We searched for your slanting eyes
as you plucked a dombra
on hills of Kazakhstan
your circles of light
dancing, leaping, gyrating
making heath grow
in bundles
It sang your mission
Heaven on Earth
Heaven on Earth
ropes loosened, dangled
Where to ?
Into One Source
where we created you
so that love can
jump again in
black lashes

Idyll (Idyl)
Idly the weary ceiling fan rotates
Air is hot but bearable
A mood for lethargy.
Sprawled on the bed my Venus lies asleep
Splintered light through slanting blinds
Highlights her naked skin.

In the quiescent quietude of a tranquil June night
Stood Queen Moon in her diadem with an entourage of handmaids
Her shimmering rays like a slithering silvery stream
Came down sliding, slanting and crashing
Turning the night into one of fluorescent effulgence

The morn dawned gray, the fog crouched o'er the sea
It spread across the land; on hill, in vale, it lay
Obscured the rolling meadow, 'till arose a breeze
As sun burned through the mist with slanting ray
A thought did find its way into my mind
That days will bide their time before they say
Now look at us in all our finery designed
To dazzle and delight, as -- our glory we unwind

A vision high and so enchanting
Of sunlight off rainbow slanting
Minuscule droplets rays refracting
Light expanding and retracting
Through prism lens colors bending
To form a rainbow spectrum blending
A never-ending arch of wonder
Beginning at the end of thunder
A warm and ethereal hue
The world awash in colors new
Of bright, fresh tones in shades of green
And picture perfect sky serene

you step like a puzzled vixen,
you sniff at damp bark
and beds of leaves,
clothed in burnt sticks and smoke,
your eyes are slanting snow,
wary of ice and shadow;
this falls between us,
you wait under trees
or at frozen gates
on evenings when I late home
carrying the basket of stones
you laid at my door.

Where and when and everytime
beauty comes to pass.
Always at a distance.
closer at it's class.
Spirits large and smaller
seemingly not meeting.
Slanting human eyes
from all the Gods are greeting.
Ora's 'round the trees
dimly being seen.
Blinding what eyes open.
Denying where they've been.
Loving what comes ready
while needing what comes later.
Patience for the soul
and pain for the creator.

Saffron sun shone brightly, though it was a rainy day,
And varicolored umbrellas were up, in wild vivid array.
All shades were abloom, on the beautiful Dahlia Avenue,
And smiles were seen, in slanting rain of silvery hue!
Such mellow yellow gold, out of violet midnight dreams-
Like the heart of motley autumn, wearing spring greens!

Like a concise rose
she crosses the lobby
knowing her goal,
carrying it out.
Tick, tock, her accurate feet
complete the flower.
A quiet perfume remains
after six o'clock
when late sunlight
illuminates the office
slanting across the empty desks.
But she has a vision,
that hides within her
like a thunderstorm
within an egg.
One day she'll untie her hair
on vast green fields
under darkening skies
and finally be.

Regard this solitary woman:
The slanting of her eyes
When she would look your way;
The treasure of her words
When she would share her heart.
The measure of her love
As she would measure yours.
Regard this solitary woman
Wrapped in silk and perfume;
Her chains are made of gold.
Her dreams are made of chains....
And somewhere in a young man's name
The reason for her solitude remains...

Dramatic Verse
In fall, Boomer Halloweens produce orange and black memories;
will I ever outgrow treat-laden bags and glowing pumpkins?
Van Gogh's flaming handiwork draws crowds in the Blue Ridge;
he paints the trees, but God does the skies.
The slanting sunlight creeps up my back,
its lengthening rays whispering “snow.”
Manic animals off their meds gather food.
Stashes forgotten, they must follow winter's diet.
Sleep comes early to me now.
In fall.

Prose Poetry
Listen to poem:
from: "Finding Them Lost" by Howard Moss:
"Thinking of words that would save him, slanting
Off in the air, some cracked, some bent;
Finding them lost, he started saying
Some other words he never meant."
Given the freedom to explain,
I'd grow voluble as air
and, dizzy, on verbal heights
I'd soar, engage in frilly flights
Of fact. And fancy you adore
elipsis, hyperbole,
precision, ambiguity,
and are enamored,
just as I, with words:
with consonant, with vow.

A crooked slanting moon
shifts the eye
comes under the chaste tree
and washes the tainted
victory.
Wolves start howling
at the tomb of unknown martyr,
man-eaters recoil
on the sugar island
and talk about destinies,
A mourning crowd walks
repudiating the death;
one day nuances of an ode
will thaw the delta
in disbelief.
The Delphic attitude
of a translucent murder
narrates the wisdom of sadness
which cannot propel the
blood stained light.
