Premium Member Lightning Takes the Forest
A flash of light
In the woods
Quick popping noise
Streak across the sky

Stars brighten
and glisten
against dark of night
as two lightning bolts strike

Animals take cover
Under fallen oaks and hickories
Felled during other lightning strikes

Fox, opossums, wolves
Huddling and resting
As cosmos fireworks
Begin their beautiful light show...

Premium Member Cozy Porch Kitten
The day was warm for November, almost seventy degrees. The cat unrolled her length
to glean the most sunlight possible. An opossum came up to drink the cat’s water, but the
cat was wise, not uttering a sound, understanding opossums do not usually appear in the day time.

Premium Member I Live In the Woods
I live in the woods.
A forest.
Much of it is untouched.
Humans have not been in it for hundreds of years.
Habitat for the wild ones.
We have seen groundhog, beaver, raccoons, opossums, fox, mink,
turtle, squirrel, bunny, deer, fox, and now wolves.
I purposefully left out the two one hundred and ten pound pregnant
pot belly pigs because that is another story....

I sit outside wondering what those bossy raccoons are doing in the kitchen.
They threw me out assuring me that spaghetti making is their specialty.
Do not let the crows in, I cautioned them. They steal my shiny jewelry.
It is not easy being animal friendly. I sit on the porch, trying not to hear
My husband’s favorite drums being played in the living room.
Obviously those bozos have let the opossums in!...

Non, hairy, haven,
The momma possum’s bosom,
Purse pouch vouches safe,
For babies facing drama,
Momma's death by car trauma!

In Honor Of: Chris Aechtner & Contest: Sanctuary

Baby opossums are so well protected in their mother's pouch that when she suffers a fatal
trauma, such as getting hit by a car , the baby possums often remain unharmed.

Premium Member We Live In a Zoo
Cat food in the kitchen
Bird seed down the hall
Dog food on the back porch
Giraffe food against the wall

We live in a zoo, a menagerie
With opossums and one snake
There is no place I would rather be
Having pets for us is no mistake

Cornmeal for squirrel with fluffy tail
Come visit us, we should charge you a fee
Buffalos arrive daily in the pony express mail
We are loving these animals, husband and me....

At first sight, her dark,
innocent beauty captivated
the spirited young redhead.
They lived, loved, breathed
through eight births
and one death, baby Loretta.

Spine stiffened, she watched
her love lowered six feet
into the bitterroot soil,
her thickened body numb,
her mind in time warp.

She tasted gritty ashes,
unable to crush the stone
lodged within her breast.

Children clung to her skirts
like baby opossums fastened
to their mother's skin....

Premium Member A Peaceful Valley Sunday----Potd---
This is where I indeed, do live!
With many churches, to support and which to give.

Murder is a most rare occurrence here.
No riots, no drunks, walking about, slugging down a beer.

Trees are luscious green, all year round.
Flowers grow in lovely silence, not uttering a sound.

Bunnies, opossums, cats at happy play.
Would that our world were as sweet, as this peaceful valley Sunday!
