Ibis
Idolized by pharaohs, monarchs and kings;
Bird of the wetlands, marshes and swamps.
Interesting forager with long bill and stilted long legs;
Sacred icon of the dynasties of yore....

Flamingo Dance
Flamingo Dance
Such a prissy flashy crowd
Pink burlesque feathers sashay left.
One leg up the other down
Drop the neck and touch the ground
Graceful poses in bright hue
Ibis dances two by two
Shuffle faster, ruffle feathers
Real life pink Flamingo dancers....

Flag of My Fathers
Red is the red rum
and blooms of chaconia…
the Scarlet Ibis
Black is the black gold
and dark souls of the slave ships…
the pitch in the lake
White is the cricket
and old bones of lost Empire…
ghosts of Trinidad

For Every Beauty, Each Loving Action
I
For every scene: washing waterfall
For any gift for my children, phonecall
For every travel you made possible
I feel so grateful, hopeful, O Eternal
II
For even in pollution, this unknown lake
Is a source of beauty: ibis, coot, drake
For ducks, too, and unknown cataracts
I celebrate Creator's provision, love-acts...

On Our Lake
The morning -
kayaks launch, voices call,
sound moves cleanly over deep waters.
White ibis and blue heron cordon cypress knees;
shallow eddies mirror the faces of our dreams.
At twilight, sherbet reflections paint
sunlight's fair, fading face
on our lake.

I Am the Ibis
I am the Ibis a sacred bird,
from distant lands of the ancients.
the land of pyramids,
lands of Arabia and Africa.
Bird of knowledge that is friend to the Gods.
Brave during storms my will is as strong
as a Hurricane.
I am the last to take shelter before
a storm approaches
and the first to reappear
once
the
storm has passed....

Ibis 101
He's treading the shallows
at the border of the lake like
a house cat kneading your lap,
his neck like radar, scanning a map
for morsels disingenuously believing
the borders of the lake are Zen,
that the mire in which they anchor
is armor against the avian, but then,
gliding guilelessly along edges,
Slowly,slowly, no need for hurry:
he never hedges the bet there's
breakfast beneath his feet,
the table set....

Endangered
Endangered species are around the world
Narcissus Bugei bulbous plant of Spain
Dabry's Sturgeon mostly now a dreamworld
Amur Leopard, Russian thirty-five remain
Nava's Wren from Mexico lost domain
Gorillas, by intense poaching
Eurasian Lynx saved by reintroducing
River Dolphins hurt from habitat loss
East African Highland Shrew disappearing
Dwarf Olive Ibis, will always engross?
In honor of Dr. Ram's contest..

Lance-Lot
Lance-Lot
by Michael R. Burch
Preposterous bird!
Inelegant! Absurd!
Until the great & mighty heron
brandishes his fearsome sword.

Wild Birds
I am an Ibis, a wading bird.
Times have become quite absurd.
My family used to enjoy the wetlands.
The cool fresh water answered all our demands.
The global weather patterns have all changed.
The water situation is definitely rearranged.
Water in our habitat did just deteriorate.
Forcing us to fly east and migrate.
We all made homes in each city.
Which is really now such a pity.
Our search for water is sad.
Our future is pretty bad....

Loving Into Eternity
Written in
the stars
light years away
beyond space
hunting eternity
an endless ibis
within such
a great vastness
One bond
deeper than
flesh and bones
floating where
humans eyes
have not seen
her shawl stretches
as echoes carry
across oceans
Blood of devotion
flies with emotions
in the spirit
of feelings
without wings
Distance is not
a barrier
forever our love
will live eternally
into the heaven's
of our dreams...
