May's Shy Kiss
Blades whisper
as I walk the grass
Impatiens blush
Wisteria hides
behind lavender
dreadlocks
As dawn peeks
above roof tops
a timid breeze
touches my cheek
and May's shy kiss
brushes
my silent lips

Personification
Orange-Red Dreadlocks
She wore orange-red dreadlocks
Danced on the horizon far away
Setting the woods on fire
Stirring up all kinds of desire
Roosters arose with voices of power
Sleeply pines in silhouette still stood
Dormant in cold and frozen twigs
She stirred the air to warm and play
Happiness she brought
Sent the cold swiftly away...

The Definition of Beauty
BEAUTY
Is the girl wearing braids in her hair
BEAUTY
Is the young lady with an afro
BEAUTY
Is the woman wearing dreadlocks
BEAUTY
Is what we are
The women of the future
Defining Beauty as we are
It doesn't matter upon our dark skin
It matters upon our confidence within
I am BEAUTY
And so is every independent young lady and child
I define my sense of BEAUTY
BEAUTY doesn't define me...

A Soul In There Somewhere
Blue hair, green hair
yellow or pink
Staring at dreadlocks
makes me think
A soul in there somewhere
cries out its grief
For it's grown up
with disbelief
In God, in Right from Wrong
its constitution weak, not strong
Take this soul to the God it craves
do not let it writhe and seethe
Free it from its cage
give it room to breathe...

Him Wearing Them Knotty Dreadlocks
A ten-foot-high sunflower man
with a gold-capped tooth in his mouth but
there ain't no plan
yet he wears the same old knotty
dreadlocks again and again
While walking himself through
Black Folk's yard in that bebop-style
no doubt along the avenue road
while smoking some of that sweet sweet Gunga
Yet, him so full of himself
rasta man young rapper
you rapscallion, did you bring the juice...

Shine, Shine, Shine, Shining Star...
Dreadlocks and smiles
in teardrops and eyefuls
which fall gracefully
and remind all look skyward
Hands held and voices
and right or wrong choices
which pull us together
and make us move forward
Lean in and step close
to ones that you love most
which never will leave you
or doubt who you are
Shoulders and strong arms
to cry and long lean on
which carry you bright
to your sky, shining star......

The Stiletto Life
The Stiletto Life
Her Infectious smile and rhythmic click-clack on the pavement,
Mask the pain from her eight-inch, pencil-thin Louboutin heels;
Flying, neat, long dreadlocks, trail her incredibly steady strides,
As, gracefully, she sashays past, turning heads and dropping jaws;
Her white dress, a slightly revealing flutter in the breezy drizzle!

Misinterpreted Look
He was looking at me
With his sunken eyelids
And his round lips
His dreadlocks that hang loosely to his face
It wasn't just any look but a stare
I concluded he had fallen for me
And my heart keep on beating
And my soul kept on yearning
While his locks kept killing me slowly
Eventually he spoke,
"Miss,your sweater is inside out"
As if stung,
I rushed to the washrooms
Confused by my love for his dreadlocks
Ashamed of my instincts
If only he could read my mind.........

My Brother's room
I wonder why his is always open
when I smell something rotten
Our kittens under his bed faints
I wonder why he closes his dome while at home
and opens it while away
Is his intentions to punish me and the kittens?
And when I am away
I pity the poor pets and neighbours
I wonder why his shoes are always clean
is the smell in my mind?
Or it’s his socks under the shoes
and why does he mock me o f my dreadlocks?
Tomorrow I am hiding all his shoes
Hopping to see his socks...
