I have dislike of all royalty who stole the people's land
Their acolytes were given titles to ensure their loyalty.
Privileged aristocracy, the guardian of transformation
Modern days robber baron is a continuum to be sure
The people walk alongside gilded horse-drawn carriages
Cap-in-hand, wave flags and accept their lowly life....

A little red trolley sits, remembering former days 
Of horse drawn carriages, filled with new marriages
Of clanging bells and merry people,
Doing chores,or walking into stores 
Rolling hills and long tall steeples
Weathered stones in grass covered cemeteries
Busy times filled with haunted memories 
Rising from the haze of long forgotten days...

Demanding fight, flight, freeze or fawn
The new version of the tale

Crystal chandeliers
The background music of

Soothed the nobility at Peterhof
St. Peterburg's bow to Versailles;
Carriages and troikas 
Moved elegantly, smartly 
Conveying crowned heads
Seeking favor from the tsar
In a great hall now guarded
By old Russian babas
Nodding, fighting sleep
As they glare at the tourists....

I have caressed
in coffin draped hugs
those who defended me,
hung limply as taps
and tears flowed
across generations.
Known the thrill
of fireworks and jubilation
rose, full faced,
in sundrenched
wind starched glory.
Wept in “half staffed” darkened loneliness
as horse drawn carriages
moved through silenced crowds.
I am neither a cause
nor a solution
but a symbol
of our best….and worst.

I am but a flag.
I look to you
to raise me up.
