River Rising -- Part Two
RIVER RISING (PART TWO)

another month of rain
and noah
has completed
an ark of stone.
so much for his faith
in god.

He was king of the under ground brewer
Everyday he'd hide away
With the hot lines he did play
Then old bleached gator scared him away...

Epitaph For George - a Lethal Wind
EPITAPH - A LETHAL WIND

Here lies George, the sad deceased

Victim of flatulence released

The result: he would expire

Stood before an open fire

These Are the Trees
THESE ARE THE TREES

these are the trees
which were planted
as seedlings forty years
ago and are now as tall
as the towers
that fell
on 9/11.

these are the trees
planted as seedlings
hiding the house
hiding the fear
of the people who live
inside incapable of escaping
the terror.

too high up white flags
cannot be seen. the end

is inevitable.

The Poetry of Cancer
THE POETRY OF CANCER
                                                (For Shelly)

My editor says
keep it simple,

so here it is:
you died on Saturday

and your viewing
was Monday.

You were a good poet
but cancer

ate through you
so fast you didn’t have

time

to write a good-bye
poem.

Now here it is Tuesday
and I am

waiting

for an email
that will never

come.

Jesus Failed
JESUS FAILED

Walking on the stormy
sea of galilee, Jesus,
glancing up
at the heavens,
shakes his fists
(at the pelting rain)
ignores his disciples
cries of pain
tires of playing
messiah miracle games.

He fills his pockets
with heavy stones
walks out to sea
alone
and declares loud
and clear
for all to hear:
I am
not to blame
for this lousy weather.

This Appalachian Town
THIS APPALACHIAN TOWN

up on the hill
the view of the ohio
river is magnificent
in the rising sun.
below a rusted barge
is puffing against
the current
working hard
to meet its
destination.
this is the rigid life
of this small
Appalachian town:
fighting the current
or stepping in
and drowning.
everyday choices
have to be made.

the barge chugs along.

Viagra Beer
Leave it to the Scottish as the royal wedding nears
To unveil their latest, Viagra infused beers
A beer to stir the loins of the newly wedded prince
A beer to shock the royals and make the Queen Mum wince
A beer that’s sure to give the Brits a stiffer upper lip
A beer that makes this Scotland brewer appear a bit more hip
A beer that says “Arise Prince Willy” – “Celebrate Big Willy Style”
A beer best taken “tongue-in-cheek” guaranteed to raise a smile

Tears of Love
Love tears are sweet
Like honey liquor
Shed in happiness and murky moments
Inevitable like death in life

Parting paints painful patterns
On lovers’ hearts’ books
Love is so binding
Yet forbidding when heartbreaking

I once received a calabash
Frothing with love like traditional beer
From a skilled brewer
My folly drained it with a quick wish

I gobbled it with a gush
I wished for more
But the giver had fled
Left drunk in sweet tears of love...
Oh! She was never to return!...
