These Are the Trees

THESE ARE THE TREES

these are the trees
which were planted
as seedlings forty years
ago and are now as tall
as the towers
that fell
on 9/11.

these are the trees
planted as seedlings
hiding the house
hiding the fear 
of the people who live
inside incapable of escaping
the terror.

too high up white flags
cannot be seen.  the end

is inevitable.
