There once was an old man we called Harry
That felt all animals were quite scary
When the black bear stood tall
He did not move at all
Cause the bear was chasing his friend Larry...

Summer Sighting
He frolicked through the grass
And then he clambered up a tree,
Gazing at the cars all filled
With wide-eyed folk like me.

The traffic slowed so everyone
Could get a little peek
At the black bear yearling (give or take),
The highlight of the week.

It's such a treat to catch a glimpse
Of wildlife in the wild.
Perhaps that bear, confronting us,
Was equally beguiled....

Ode to Tofitian Rain

What is in Tofino rain
that makes it smell so sweet?
A blend of berries, a certain strain
of sea salt, fog and peat

it smells of woodsmoke, tangy fir
and kelp washed up on shore
it smells of bitter evergreen
and dampened black bear fur,
blackberry wine that I just poured
and roasted coffee bean

it smells of maple, honeycomb
it smells of earth
it smells like home....

Premium Member No Cows To Look At
No cows to look at
I hear the truck traffic

Everything changes like clouds
The page this poem is on burns

Coming from the funeral with friends
Talking on the telephone

No trucks to grind their gears
I hear the minute hand moving

Birds and people inhabit the earth
A black bear inhabits the earth, too

A rock in the sun
Calligraphy brush

In a mind there is apocalypse
No one can hear it...

Yelling With the Crowd
From somewhere deep in the woods
A pack of dogs sound discovery;
Perhaps a 'possum or a 'coon
Or maybe that old black bear
A farmer said he saw crossing
Our dirt road--causes this choir
Of tenor cries.

I will not get my gun nor investigate
What surprised the dogs.
It's dawn and there is coffee
Left to drink with thoughts
Of the last time I was excited enough
To yell with the crowd,
Witnessing the unexpected....

It’s summer on the hill
With Day Lilies surrounding the house
Hummingbirds buzzing and chirping
Other birdsongs warbling in the trees
The black bear wandered slowly by
Then, rushed into the woods from noise
Shades of green everywhere to see
A slice of life, a peaceful place to be
As if the rest of the world does not exist
Colors, plants and the wildlife rule
If only everything could be like this

Creeper of the Night
The creeper of the night takes flight,
Into the deep shadows of the dark Enchanted Forest.
Keep your eyes peeled,
Your ears open for the questioning language of the creatures.
Beware of the Enchanted Forest.
As it gets closer to it’s destination,
it slows few feet above the ground.
Once it entered the magical place, it transformed.
Tall, dark, and husky.
There stood a black bear, then it just wandered off like nothing happened....

Cute black bear has a perfect behind and her manicured paws are so kind When she sits on a chair all the male bears just stare - her sheer beauty, it just blows their mind! A friend has given me a little black bear as a replacement for the soft toy we used to have in my husband’s car – I hope she lasts as long as our old ‘guard dog’! https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/farewell_old_friend_888761 05~15~17

A black blur of movement, caught my eye
I looked out the window to see a young black bear walk by
I was on the phone and I spoke so loud through an open sliding door
It ran away because they do not like loud noise
It is one of the best defenses from any harm
There was no time for a photo as it disappeared into the woods
They visit my yard each summer and this time it was late
It is a sight to see each summer, but worth the wait

What a crazy thing, the old woman said.
Her laugh was enormous her face was red.
upside down in a tree
alligator grins at she
a giant jump; laughing woman is dead

Glad it was her said black bear in tutu
sitting in place where magic mushrooms grew
that is not nice
alligator jumped twice
bloody battle began between the two

the bear will win said a toad by the tree
I doubt it bet a fuzzy bumblebee
bear gave a sigh
gator gave them the eye
they both ran away from murderous spree...

Pickle On the Road
When walking along on the road,
An object appeared, so I slowed.
It was probably tossed
From a car that had crossed;
The surprise on my face must have showed.

‘Twas a pickle, a deli-type spear,
Maybe packed with a sandwich? Unclear.
Crisp and green, its appeal
Would add much to a meal
Of a passing black bear or a deer.

Still, the person who flung it outside
Didn’t mean for a snack to provide.
He was likely a smug
Type of littering bug,
Maybe pickled himself, for the ride....
