It is the birthing time.
Baby turtles flap flippers
as they try to swim on sand.

The sun glares and pins -
down this struggle for life
with a burning indifference,
as hunger fulfills its promise....

most feed on insects and bird seeds of some kind

then tossed up and back
on a sheer-beaked razor edge
into a gull’s throat.

Did one escape in the frenzy?
Hard to tell
if one soft shell made it
to the ocean or not.

The caught keep swimming,

Big yellow beak heading
At me, full speed ahead
And I quickly stepped back.

Stalled claws gripped the ground;
Halting bird staring;
Obsidian eyes
Screamed in confusion;

Approached slowly.
I held out seeds,
