Like a meteor shower
Hailing down from heights unknown
TRUTH bombs dropping every hour
Into a heart where WORD has been sown
Opening up new possibilities
Unimaginable til now
The VOID in every door jam
Beckoning rhythm to bow
Sorrow and grief want to dance
With depression upon the back
Swing, two three, jump, and glide
Over the dip, missing the crack
...where LOVE embraces lack

When a jackhammer’s outside your door
It’s a sound that you cannot ignore.
You can’t focus or think
And your brain’s on the brink
Of a meltdown, like never before.
For the rat-a-tat-rat-a-tat noise
Is a sound that not merely annoys.
It gets under your skin
‘Til it seems like it’s been
Always there, as your mind it destroys.
Now a city existence has quirks
And though quiet’s not one of its perks,
There are limits to what
We can take, but it’s not
Constant rat-a-tat-tatting that irks!

Rat-a-tat, Rat-a-tat, Rat-a-tat-tat
sounds of war, tattered fife, ragged drum
In feathered cap, Yankee Doodle went to town
where he met a clever man named Madison
Wrote up a constitution, though not for everyone
rights for whites -- but not for blacks or browns...
Now it's 2 1/2 strife-torn centuries later
some love the USA; others hate her
Rat-a-tat, Rat-a-tat, Rat-a-tat-tat
so many promises ~ fallen flat
Machine-gun fire nightly in 'most every city
'Twas it all for naught ~ 'twould be a pity
Rat-a-tat-tat, hear the gunshots repeat,
children are shooting children in their school.
And yet, gun control bills end in defeat;
corporate America is no fool.
Money matters more than lives; it's a fact;
politicians fear the gun lobby's might.
And do nothing; when school kids are attacked,
except to acknowledge that it isn't right.
No show of tears can quell a mother's pain;
nor condolences or thoughts and prayers.
For words can't bring her child to life again,
and the message she hears; is no one cares.
All those who say guns don't kill, people do,
invariably know that is not true.
New year,… same drummer….. measuring the distance.

Toppled children scatter rat-tat
