SERENDIPITY
commercialized like dippity-do
— the extra hold hair gel.
sounds like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious*
so fresh; and clean —
a nonsense word used
when you have nothing else to say.
and let’s not forget serenity now**
yelled uncontrollably
when you need to calm down.

From too much zimstern, zabaglione and ziti-
Zucchini, zwieback, zeppoles, and zeps;
Zillion zitherns of zirconia
Zinging on zephyrs for the zazzy
Zemni zealous zeal for Zambonis,
Zeaxanthin zaps zinc zombie zones,
Zoographer’s zest for the zygote Zen zenith -

It was 5am, a cold, dark, foggy night
As Charles and I headed-out to the right
for the ‘Pont de Bir-Hakeim’ bridge across the Seine.
We weren’t the least discouraged by the rain.
When possible, we stick to the lower quays
the traffic-free promenades that run close to the Seine
The wind was bracing as we established our pace
turning west which put a fine rainy-mist in our face
The trick to running distance is to establish your breathing
I time mine to my steps, 4-steps-in and four-out, decreasing
to two-by-two as we move into our groove.
We’re aggressive runners, this is for fun
Exercising peers, who’ve run together for years
We have plans, and set signals with our hands
we wear LED lights so we’re seen at night
We edge the left bank - imagine the pace - the slow steady rhythms
Guys are stronger and faster but I hang-in there with him.
The Seine cruise ships are dark, moored at their last pier stops
The pizzerias are closed, as are the souvenir shops
After crossing the Saine via the bridge central colonnade,
the path becomes somewhat dense and dangerous,
a twisting forest of staircases and crosswalks sequitous
everything bottles down - competing for space -
bike paths, speeding cars, busses, and trains
On the right bank a Burger King is the first thing we see
Whoppers here feature brioche buns and yummy goat cheese
Once we clear the river area, a pre-dawn quiet claims the streets
scents rising from the bakeries make you want to stop and eat
It’s wet and dark as we wind our way, but we do this every day
five miles later, the gray ‘Pont d’Iéna’ bridge safely coveys
us back to the left bank with it’s tranquil vibe of birds awakening
Close to home now, entering the park, we tear into a sprint,
our own private, morning, mixed olympic track event
His senescence (he’s 55) lulls me into thinking I can beat him
but I never can - why is my defeat so consistent?

Dear budding poet,
Modern poetry is an evolutionary process. A poet never really stops growing and learning. Even the most seasoned of poets can discover and master new forms. I wish you a happy journey to poetic creativity. My advice is to read poetry voraciously and listen to poetry recitals.
Read poems by famous poets. Join a group such as www.Poetrysoup.com and study definitions of poetry forms. You'll soon familiarize yourself with many brilliant Poetrysoup poets, poetry terminology, rhyme schemes, meters, etc. You'll also see examples of all the poetry forms.
Poetry is a malleable art form. It can be formless, like water. Like wet clay, you can mold or shape a poem however you desire. The sky is the limit in terms of your subject matter. I strongly suggest going out in nature for a wealth of inspiration. Try writing a poem outdoors.
Poetic inspiration is likely to materialize as you're much more alert and aware of your surroundings. Enter Poetrysoup poetry contests, which will further fuel your inspiration to write more. Positive, encouraging feedback from supportive poets also keeps your creative juices flowing.

I write upon the mirror of youth’s pizzazzy.
Stunning, clear, ravishing - the Spring of life.
Enjoy the pure lilt of her eyes.
She can handle close-ups.
Boys praise unblemished frame with no experience.
Tan-Summer glow draws herself a husband.
I write upon the mirror of my Autumn brand.
Her wrinkles letting go of each pretense.
Wine cascades into grateful cup,
dispenses with the lies.
Snuggles with spouse - let’s go of bitterness and strife.
Frees herself, uninhibited, jazzy.
I write upon the Winter mirror of esprit.
She’s looking forward to the afterlife.
With tears in eyes says her goodbyes.
Endearing - the close-ups
of kith and kin warmth. See! There’s no need for defense.
Tell heaven, her life has been grand.

Hidden away from the light of day
In cubbyholes and basement flats
Are they who play computer games
And stuff their faces with chocolates.
Here is where they snicker and connive
(While rambunctious fingers press the buttons)
On terrestrial Earth, this side of the universe,
Of mice, keyboards, and controllers.
But when they crash into the wall of forever
And dispersed matter becomes reality,
The power of the sun from which they run
Traps them into the quagmire of sobriety.
There is no tomorrow, they discover;
The atemporal wall blocks the future.

The trouble’s root, the torn meniscus court.
Entertainment unashamedly crass.
The grape is richly poured — white, red import.
A schism scheme, girl’s hips are made of brass.*
She danced so lightning fast, the strikes betwixt
King Herod’s eyes. The drums, the sound of lust.
A pulse needs transfusion, breath-bait transfixed.
His greedy face excoriates a bust —
John’s dripping tongue no further screams — its ink
‘tis wet with appreciation and dread. **
She-paws and dangly skirt — the shark, her wink —
the winds of change in chamber of the dead.
Fermented pheromones, a teasing breeze.
A tantamount twister forced veins to freeze.
