Premium MemberHappy Birthday To Laura

Note: Laura Leiser has been a good friend for several years and was the one who invited me to try Poetry Soup in 2016. She leads a writer's workshop that I am blessed to be a member of, and is a talented poet in many styles, writing of nature, family, faith, whimsical topics and vignettes from life. I hope you can take some time this week to check out some of her poems. Happy Birthday Laura! (June 10th)

Creation is your most beloved theme:
"Icelandic talismans of tales sublime".
So many forms you've written, it would seem
you never lack for metaphor or rhyme.

Your faith in God so strong, with nuance blest
in poems 'giving godly grace' to all.
Heroic crown of sonnets - I'm impressed!
a masterpiece that holds my soul in thrall.

You write of moments from the life you live,
of lovely grandchildren - one girl, one boy.
As you have given freely, so I give
my birthday greeting - may it bring you joy!

So grateful for the heartfelt, warm invite
six years ago that led me to this site.

Premium MemberMatthew's Odds

Read the Grahams and Templetons.
Sifted the Calvinists and Arminians.
Tried to qualify the Mortals and Venials.
John’s comfort was lost in Hebrew’s six.

I got the faith and conviction in
The Holy Ghost and Christ the Son.
Been given clear skies and sight,
but pre-meditated sins still done.

Eternal security for some so easy,
seems wide steps on a narrow way.
Deceit often more subtle than
Branch Davidians and jungle Kool-Aid.

This - A Seed of fear?
Carried by the winds of Mount Azazel,
watered by fallen whispers in my ear?
Or taking no heed, a fool plays with sin?

Don’t want to wake up under the wrong Throne,
Just think about the ‘few there be that find it’,
Intermittent obedience and lukewarms thrown.
Always, the fear of this, has been with me.

Premium MemberThe Stepping Stone

What wondrous goal makes tiny planet Earth
a stepping stone in life's eternal sea?
What spectral promise gives its journey worth
as it conforms to cosmic destiny?
What tireless pulse gives rhythm to its flight
beyond the steady rule of moon and sun?
What answer to the never-ending plight
of why and where and how it was begun?

Alive within my beating human heart
there dwells solution that can end the quest,
for born of God, I know the truth in part...
He lodged it there with grace within my breast.

From earth-life end, I step to hallowed lands,
where my Creator waits with outstretched hands.

Premium MemberNot On the Same Page--For Contest

Hey, those friggin’ books you read
‘bout bein a metro dude
so into part-time love does not thrill
this awesome boo, no way!
Man, I am on act eight of flaps chillin’
about passion reborn with footnotes
kinda whack and sentimental;
while you dig outdated pgfs
googling for instant romance!
Seriously?
Well, if you can’t act real and be
the legend of our sweet stuff,
we’re not on the same page, aight?
Kewl, find more square books
and take a long hike ‘cuz I’m outta my way.
Fail!

Ain't An Ornery Yahoo

Old widow lady of ninety-two
Lives by herself with nothing else to do
Except sit in her chair next to the window
And stare out for hours with dreams of her past woe

I reckon she ain't ornery yahoo
With a few bricks short of a load
Doing nothing but fuss and talk for ever and tells tall tales
Ain't no telling of those tall tales are true

Whaddya think?

She sits in her chair next to the window
And stares out for hours with dreams of her past woe
Seasons have come and gone with the flowers,
 Grass and trees changing colors

She's ran off all her children, family, and friends
Doing nothing but fuss and talk for ever and tells tall tales

With a ruckus if you don't agree and resist
She gets riled up lifts up her clenched dukes and
Lands an uppercut to the mug she’s kissed

Whaddya think?

Y’all want to stay out of her crosshairs if ya can’t resist
Cause y’all open a can of worms if you persist
She carries a small pearl handle chrome plated
Stup nose 22 pistol in her purse

My Two-Faced Auntie May: For Contest

Auntie May came to visit,
and sat in daddy's favorite chair.
I looked behind her head,
but all I saw was hair.

I snuck into her room.
Her suitcase was on the floor.
I took a peek inside, then
Auntie May walked in the door.

"Why are you in my room?"
She loudly yelled at me.
And I answered her as truthfully
as a seven-year-old can be.

"Well, I over heard my daddy say
you're two-faced, and I was curious to see,
what your other face looked like.
Auntie, will you show it to me?"

The term two faced refers to the
Roman god Janus who had two
faces, one at the front of his head
and another at the back.

Poor Humpty Dumpty was a numpty when he fell off the garden wall
His poor old ma went bananas, told me to buzz off when I call

Guess I better sit on the shelf otherwise I’ll go completely nuts
I ain’t gonna take no stick from that mangy old bunch of mutts

I’ll get myself a fix of chocolate cos I could do with a little lift
But I’ll end up with a spare tyre, that blubber I’m gonna have to shift

I’m feeling so blue and sad today the gremlins are in my life
Perhaps I better go for a stroll or I’ll get an ear bashing from the wife

Maybe I’ll see some dickie birds or a cute fluffy little bunny
If I see their lil’ bob tails, oh man they look so darn funny

Next I'll grab the old gal some chox and a nice bunch of flowers
She’ll be putting on her war paint, boy that can take some hours

Now I’m gonna sit on the fence and try and get a little rest
Got my best bib and tucker on - I’m dressed in my Sunday best

Ride To a Nuthouse

Now I am sitting alone in this
Funny wagon with my boom box
and minding my own business
along with a bunch of numskulls
who thinks I am a nutcase like them—
What a drag! And they think we are
all going to a Funny Farm where
they take those who go bananas!

But I know better because
I am good and dandy--
One hell of a cockscomb dude!
All I am doing is
bamboozling them for now,
Behaving as if I am one of them—
These dolts, dim-witted blockheads!

But, YOU, who’s reading this,
can vouch for me, won’t ya?
Why? Because you are as cool as I am,
It takes one to know one!

You catching my drift, ain’t ya?

Premium MemberWin- Lose Or Place--Colloquialisms

Writing for contests, is often a crapshoot!
Some may be teasers, and others no brainers.
Results often open a new can of worms,
though sponsors with backbones, will stick to their guns!
Plagued by the screams of dissatisfied rhymers
whose dreams of a win may have gone up in smoke!
But a poet's class act, is to take it in stride.
Don't be hung up, keep your eye on prize !

Wearing war-paint is a taint on the pride
Don't have a fit, ... be quick to decide
Stoked by the turn-on of writing excitement
We are caught in the cross-hairs of P. S. enchantment !!
Write with a zest that will stick to the ribs
Write for yourself, and find joy in the race
There is no disgrace if you handle with grace
Hold up your head, whether win, lose or place!

Premium MemberPyjamas - For Colloquialism Contest

I clapped eyes on some jimjams
at me local Marks and Sparks,
but strapped for readies,
I couldn't buy them
and had to treat it as a lark.

It was a shame,
for they were prezzies.
(I do like Marks and Sparks...)
I looked around at bits and bobs,
then toddled to the park.

Premium MemberLife On the Dock

Like silent sentries in a row
the pylon docks await my arrival.
It is low tide as I step
onto the gangway.
Crusty barnacles cling tenaciously
to the pylons, as salt water
laps the rocky shoreline.

A lanky blue heron
carefully picks it's way
between the fingers
of the dock slips.
A cool breeze picks up
and the boats respond
bobbing to and fro.

Halyard lines clang
against the masts of sailboats
as weather vanes turn
toward the prevailing
northwest winds.

The pungent smell of sea salt air
and the cool mist against my face
evoke thoughts of escape
and high sea adventures.

How I long to sail away
without a care
and maybe never to return.

The glories of the ocean breeze
waft gently over my face
while prism rays draw me
toward the lapping shoreline
and I feel young and free.

This place is where I am truly me
where my spirit is released
and as I breathe in
the salt sea air
I give myself over
to the sea.

Wie leiser Gesang
Der Untergang der Sonne
Am weiten Horizont

Vanishing Colours / Verblassende Farben

When colours vanish
In early evening light
I write a new poem

Soon outside sounds diminish
Towards a calm and cosy night

----------------------------------------

Wenn Farben verblassen
Im früh fallenden Abendlicht
Schreib ich ein neues Gedicht

Bald werden draußen Laute leiser
Für eine ruhig schöne Nacht
