Isn't it nice when the world's upside-down
when people are crazed with-OUT Covid around
When so many dark things seem to happen
when nuclear war can again be imagined
Yes, isn't it nice that poets lean back and peck
at keyboards indifferent to supply bottlenecks...
And what's going on now in Kyiv, Ukraine
does not occupy five-fifths of their brain

Sundays we hears de preacher's prays
Hopes ends on ropes, swings 'n sways
Gots ya nothin' jus' coz yer black
Laws gets bent but ya pays no mind
Give up tryin', no peace ta find
Gots ya nothin' jus' coz yer black
Three fifths human ain't enough
Dat yoke's too heavy, way too tough
Gots ya nothin' jus' coz yer black
Whitey gettin' mo, always will
He don't care if blood does spill
Gots ya nothin' jus' coz yer black
Forget 'bout de chillun ages past
They growd up broken, if they last
Gots ya nothin' jus' coz yer black
Sorry baby, I done no good
Best not born in this neighborhood
I tried to do de best I could
Gots ya nothin' coz yer Mamas black

not to be diminished
your fifths carry me
to a realm of impossibility
where one dares to dream
far from the root
damned to a life of iniquity
octaves spun in figure eights
your eyes, demure
an opal of exchange
dying in and out
inexperience, enchantment
sated, heart
fetal by choice
fatal by chance
fated faith in dire romance
black and white
black and white
tuned,
keys just right
sung aloud
bathed in salts of earthed
tones
seduced
shadows serenade the scene
and not seen

If it's a fair game all can win.
If it's a fair game the running
and sweating is equal
and the results can be timed.
If it's a fair game, when the clock runs down,
no miracle is asked or given, no tricks unveiled.
If it's a true game,
a zero sum invites the victor
and consoles the loser to lockers
and fifths of whiskey.
If it's a fair game no writing is required,
no comma misplaced.

The Large Hadron Collider was built deep beneath the Earth
to help reveal the secrets of the Universe's birth.
I'm not quite sure what benefits this expensive research brings
but I wish that they would give answers to more important things-
Like, when you're in a rush, why all the traffic lights are red,
why every night the missus takes up four-fifths of the bed.
If love has got no spikes or blades, why does it often hurt?
And how does boiled beetroot know you're wearing a white shirt?
So, Scientists, splitting a proton just to find what it unlocks,
maybe in the black hole you'll find a pile of my odd socks?

"A History Of..."
As it has come to be
Foundations of slavery define my destiny
Relentless jealousy continues our oppression
Only the Black American is subject to such obsession
African American, naw, I prefer black myself
Me being a native to America ever since my first breath
Every act of discrimination, every possible form of abuse
Reflections of the Word Of God being just one excuse
In actuality, only hate can bestow such cruelty upon a fellow man
Can you imagine your mother tortured with observation as your only stand
And that is the history that I and others like me must endure
No humanity exists in my ancestors being three fifths of a human and that's for sure
Something wicked has been revealed....after all, my people are continuously killed.....

You know me better than I know myself
You crave me while I crave our lord
With every fiber of my being
I want that moment back that moment
The holy spirit arrived within me
So divinely separated from man
My being one rib five fifths human being
Why woman only one rib of man
The rest from him his holiness
Nestled beneath my breastbone
An yet you crave me while I desire
Our lord I follow his footprints
Through the sand snow sleet and rain
While you man continue craving my pain

they say i don't fit their ideal
i'm not the kind that they're used to
they say i'm outside of their mold
and don't behave as I've been told
they say there's no place here for me
to jus' go back, to being out of the blue
they say my sexuality sets me apart
never like them, to be able and smart
they say i should go to where i began
'cause here, i'm maybe three fifths of a man
they say a gender such as me
can only be subservient to their command
they say their faith has led them thus
to proclaim my existence sub-humanity
I say to them, "Will there ever be
a time when you will treat me equally?"
"No" is the reply

An arrow
nocked by a god
and loosed
beam-straight . . .
Tick.
Tock.
The old clock
would cut it into
fifths,
fourths,
halves,
whole seconds even, and . . .
Tick.
Tock.
The old clock
told us we were part of it.
A clock marks time still,
but . . .
. . . . . .
in silence now;
time’s become insidious
and sly
and moves on tiptoe:
close your eyes and . . .
. . . . . .
it’s gone.

I wish I'd never found the coroners report
Empty bottle of Valium
Empty bottle of Imiprimine
More empty bottles
Two fifths of Vodka
One empty
One still full
Garage door closed
Hose from exhaust to wing window
Wasn't I enough for him to live for
Why daddy
Why did you leave me
My heart has been breaking for 36 years
Couldn't have lived at least for me

Her life didn't unravel well
Fact: it has been a slow hell
Sadness and disappointments
She sits and lives through much worry
Till time claims her frail shell being
Three fifths of a family
Husband high always doped
Eighty five years of fake!

A Lily is one of nature’s most special gifts
I’d pick them in ones, twos, thirds, fourths, and fifths
The exotic scent, arousing my nerves
Such a figure with the most desired curves
A Lily is mysterious
The colors drive me delirious
A mark of uncontrolled psychic power
No doubt this girl is the best flower
The Saskatchewan Lily burns my heart
Forever capturing my love, unable to tear it apart
Out in the wild it is strong and alive
Spending time with you, I grow, I thrive
Liberating my life
My love, my wife
In the cool midnight we walk
Your heart, I want to unlock
A forbidden love affair
Most willing to do any dare
It’s a given we’d be a swell pair
Your beauty and quality is so rare
Who wouldn’t want you to be their Lily?
To keep you warm, protect you from the pain that’s so chilly
Keep me coming, wanting more and more
When you’re not with me, it’s a dreadful sore
A Lily is what I love most
I will hold you, hold you close
For when the night comes I will run to you
I’ll be your one, tried and true

Echoes that rebound
on walls of night mist,
floating on sound,
chance not to be missed.
A concerto infused,
glistened in stars,
notes hanging gently
cradled in bars.
Mythical muse
transcribing the sheet,
floats into them,
softly they meet.
A Soprano-pure heart
keening a sorrow
wrung from the strings
no wish for tomorrow
Merging their souls,
vibrating as one,
this rhythm has beat,
no need for the drum.
Majestic wavelets
soothing the soul,
wanting for nothing
but a musical scroll.
Lodestar to fifths
vitulas pure form,
builds to crescendo
bowed in pure storm.
Wreathed in dripped tears
cried from their love,
wrung in the music
reigned from above
Stretched out at length
to its final ascend,
sound has now found its
refrain to transcend.
Euphoria the silence
that levels the night,
wings striking softly
in musical flight.

Drink all night,
And next day,
Time tested method,
To keep fear away
Of course sanity
Goes as well,
Lucidity, oh what the hell,
Hasn't done
That much good for me
As I suppose,
You plainly see,
Charge the trenches
Bayonnet gleams
In a field
Of horrid screams
And if you make it
To tomorrow,
All that is guaranteed,
Is lots more sorrow.
