As the dark clouds of history
Rumble overhead
As the vile with fake smiles
Follow through with what they said
We share a moment of truth
One not defined by ai
As large as a moment of silence
As small as a hi
There are strange times indeed
Marked with displaced mourning
As families gather around digital fires
And heat themselves with global warming
While the tone is dark and dim
This is not so much a early warning
Just acknowledging a bit of reality
And wishing you a good morning
A stalled monsoon trough over central Nepal
caused continuous torrential heavy rainfall
Slopes pushed up moisture from the Bay of Bengal
The catastrophe was looming large to befall.
Sudden breach of a moraine dam
Triggered Glacial Lake outburst floods
A surge of water and debris devastates
downstream, catching communities off guard.
Landslides continued to collapse slopes,
forming temporary dams that later burst
Steep valleys amplified runoff swift and fast
Flood of fury of all time unleashed the worst.
A compound climate disaster of twin sciences
Meteorology and geology to decipher in depth
monsoon extremes, unstable glaciers, terrain hazards
Perished hundreds of lives and left many homeless.
Sparse sensors, lack of predictive models a curse
Warrant real time glacial monitoring at source
With closely spaced weather station networks
And cross border early warning systems
…….Narayan Gadagkar
We were both operating together,
vibrating at an oscillating frequency -
short-band radio signals reaching
no greater than brief steps away.
It was love, but it was also that infinitesimally
narrow gap between heaven and hell.
A bulbous red on/off button,
the size of a large tomato or small planet,
kept our brains alert
to any nuclear explosions
that might otherwise have destroyed
those thin strings of real intimacy we could
have accidently blundered into.
In the end, slips of the tongue
led to neither truth nor lies,
only figures of speech.
Friends and on-lookers
watched as we turned off
all the early warning signs, one by one -
then to no one's great surprise,
we were done.
Make sure you do not need the toilet before stepping into a lift.
If you drop something pick it up before a packrat or a magpie sees it.
A good book is always worth having when in a waiting room,
Waiting for a bus or train,
Or outside a clothes shop waiting for a partner or friend,
To finish trying on everything in the shop.
Learn animal sign language,
For early warning of Earthquakes, floods and twisters.
Make a list of everything you give for free to the charity shop,
So you do not end up buying some or all of the items back.
Be prepared to make a run for it if you hear the words,
"Is this of any use to you".
Check potential partners for signs of hoarding.
When you child says but Dad,
Always best to stop what you are doing,
As chances are you are about to make a dumb mistake,
That can be used against you for years.
Always have a pencil in your pen drawer,
As finding a pen that works,
When you need one is never a given.
Planning a trip ahead of time,
Leaves more hair on your head.
Dying old leaves flutter in breeze,
Trees take it easy, who’d believe?
Grey leaves fall that green grow on trees,
Man grieves, trees cannot this believe.
Light leaves from life on a short lease,
A blessing ‘tis, few would believe.
A grave’s not just to grieve, bent knees—
A truth, gravestones fail to believe.
Should memories at birth not cease,
Lifelong lasts grief, hard to believe.
All such wisdom’s for mundane ease,
Said in solace, but who’d believe?
If hair turns grey, skin shows up crease,
It’s early warning, who’d believe?

Oh night owl
My constant companion
With luminescent eye's
Piercing through full moon
To ward off vampires and
werewolves alike
And notify an early warning
alert call
Slayers to arm's
Silver , Garlic
Stakes , Crosses
At the ready
Battle commences at the stroke
of dusk
And ends when the sun rises
For those who survive
Only to resume hostilities
tomorrow night again
The Early Warning French Window
David J Walker
The unmistakable tapping
At the protruding
French windows in
The breakfast nook
Is the early warning system
I’ve relied on
betraying the otherwise
Silent arrival of a wintery day
Sleet and ice announce its
Comings and goings
before the unseen dawn
The darkness extended to noon
Gray will be the color of today
Pitched against the icy white
And I might just stay
Right here
Watching the world from my
French Window

Appreciation Amidst Irma©
After watching Irma terrorize Florida and the Caribbean
This is what appreciation looks like
I appreciate that
I have hydro with which to make my morning coffee
That the roof is still on my home
The car I drive is on four wheels and not on its side
There is a place to jog this morning free of debris
The roads to get to work are safe and passable
My job is waiting for me at its usual place and time
The basement is high and dry
The bus will arrive to take the kids to school
And it is not a wading pool
There is no search and rescue
Nor a curfew
No evidence of a storm
Well rested after a night in bed
No howling winds and banging instead
Hunkered down in the dark would not have been a lark
Thank goodness for the early warning system
The many helping hands
So many agencies to heed the call
Standing up against the wall of flood
Thank you to all the brave souls
Who were out on patrols
We appreciate that which we have
And a speedy recovery for those that have loss
Of any kind

A-n early warning advice
N-ever lets you feel afraid;
A-llowing you to be safe,
B-ecause the dangers fade.
E-arly warning advice
L-ets you heed the reminder;
L-isten to the Lord's counsel,
E-ither ear must carefully hear.
B-ring an early warning advice,
E-very day, every night;
R-emember God sixth of July,
W-ere it not for Him, there'd be no light.
E-vade the devil's lies,
G-od has opened your eyes;
A-s you travel the world, hold an early warning advice.
I finger the rim of her goblet,
And speak with a slurring lisp:
"The floor won't clean itself,
no matter how many times I scream at it;
that's why I'm thankful you're in my life:
Because I rarely have to scream at you
more than twice."
- This is the early warning sign:
That it's nearly my bed time
Petals closed,
Pale colour,
Bending leaves,
Bound roots,
This season is not like others,
The drought, the cracking earth,
The war, the calamity,
Had all contributed to its sadness,
Others are even worse,
Pele-mêle,
Here and there,
Lying on the ground,
As though they had aggressively been,
De-rooted, cut off from their earthly warmth,
And suddenly an unexpected storm,
Poured from the sky, lightning,
A bolt of thunder and,
Torrent of rains,
Then back again, to life,
Petals invitingly open themselves,
Leaves standing up like a hound, vigilant dog's ears,
And roots vibrate as an early warning radar,
But still no smell, no scent,
A rose that does not smell, it is not worthy of the name.
Coast watchers, coast watcher in the Solomons,
Mad Aussie Coast watchers,
Mad Aussies behind the Japanese lines,
Sucking coconuts, coast watchers,
When JFK’s PT109 was cut in half, who got him,
The coast watcher, Evans got him saved his life,
Downed pilots yes they’d spot ya,
From Rabaul right down the slot ,
The Japanese were hotter,
Every island seemed had one,
crazy Aussie or Kiwi coast watcher,
Of 42 as Admiral Halsey said ,
An early warning on a raid,
Aussie Teleradio caller read ,
40 Jap. planes, the bearing made,
Australia had these men,
who worked as planters in the islands,
District officers some of them,
With natives there to guide em,
Gaudacanal, big island Aircraft Carrier,
Knew when Japanese came down the slot,
Dauntless dive bombers, Yanks were there,
Ironbottom sound still holds em yeah,
Japanese ships still parked, in lots,
Carrier Enterprise fought battles there,
Was bombed, but didn’t die,
Coast watcher saw Jap. Carrier where?
And Yanks they filled the skies. 2am 6-nov-11 Don Johnson
This is a test,
this is only a test,
of the early hubris
warning system.
The first fifty years or so
you didn't pay any attention
when we knocked you on
your butt.
With all the arrogance of youth
you hopped right up and
trivialized our warnings.
"I'm good, what's the big deal?
Take your best shot"
Well our best shot would
have left you
Dead!
What do you think about that?
We gods reserve that for those of you
too prideful to take a hint.
You're not getting up so fast now.
These little shots will do
to remind you to get rid of
that dam ego.
First
frost
of fall,
winter calls
an early warning-
Autumn patterns red-green on white.
