Imagine a thousand fireflies blinking at the same time,
not a fly and not a bug but a glowing, flashing beetle;
as a child I caught one in a jar and named him Cecile,
in a marsh among the long dense grass they climb.
Father said, let Cecile go for his life is only a few days,
so now, I just stand and appreciate their lantern displays;
imagine a thousand fireflies blinking at the same time.

Premium Member Confession

Criticism slips so easily
From unempathetic tongue
That we even blame ourselves.

Still are we not to appraise ourselves
And others, all the time...
Praying for Grace's wisdom?

Shame and blame
Are often all we hear
But surely are not love?

There is no God but God,
Jesus but a shadow of His Love,
Can we claim the same?

Though we are His children,
Let our pride be in Christ's blood,
Not in our own deeds.

Such grace, such beauty, such love,
Loved by God before creation...
Teach me Your ways, oh Lord!

through pine tree shadows

Poet's notes:
Hoards of monarch butterflies have an amazing migration which is more bird-like than that of any other insect. They migrate thousands of miles following the same path of their ancestors, even returning to the same trees that their parents inhabited to mate and lay eggs. I love the suggestion that their path might be traced by pine needles that have been disturbed and rearranged as they pass.

Exercise Becomes Me

I once knew a poet named Cecile
Call her skinny and hear her spiel
   I'm petite with small bones
I have fat and rolls she groans
If I called you names how'd you feel

So she decided things had to change
Lifting weights at first felt strange
      Her trainer pushed gently
         Encouraged intently
  Her life she happily rearranged

Now building bone density and power
Her muscles sprouting like a flower
        Strength is now her friend
      Workouts are now her trend
  It takes discipline and willpower

No longer thin rather lean and fit
Liking the changes she does admit
         Active body and mind
        Healthy diet combined
   This lifestyle she'll never quit

Big Deal

I once knew a poet named Cecile
She thinks her poems are a big deal
      Saddened when not placed
         Heart sinks in disgrace
C'mon let me win and hear me squeal

Dear Cecile

Dear Cecile, when you upped and left, did you
happen to notice that someone had poured a can
of paint over the Bentley’s bonnet?
and the other curious thing…my golf clubs have been
found in various places around the town.

I’m also getting a lot of emails from the Swiss bank
asking why so much cash has been withdrawn from my
investment account, and assuring me of their future loyalty.

Mother has been on the phone in tears, saying that a
woman with a foreign voice, has been calling her a lot
of rather unpleasant names.

It’s all very strange;
anyway, I thought I’d send you this email, in the hope that
you might be able to cast some light on this mess:
Incidentally, did you iron a shirt before you went, can’t find
any clean clothes,
                            yours, Toby.

A Simple Touch

Over my eyes,
the unveiling of a secret kept
within my breast.

Just a simple touch --
the songs spilling out of your eyes
your hand in mine.

Sudden snapshot
And the light beam brings such focus
the dark gunshot

Not a shred of doubt,
just a simple touch to let me know
Your deepest thoughts.

My Lifetime Friend: My Mother

MY LIFETIME FRIEND: MY MOTHER

Throughout childhood and adolescent days,
She was my staunchest supporter,
And through teen years and young adulthood
I was glad to be her daughter.
As a mother-in-law and grandma,
She’s there whenever/wherever she’s needed,
And if this was to be her lot in life,
She’s definitely succeeded.
But whatever she is to other folks;
A friend, sister or other,
She is to me, and will always be
MY LIFETIME FRIEND: MY MOTHER!
