DAILY GRATITUDE CASTLES IN THE SAND

Today I’m grateful for the knowledge…the ability to understand 
that I don’t need money or anyone’s permission
to build a castle in the sand.

You came in like thunder—
wild, loud, and sharp with flame.
Eyes like chaos, smile like fire,
never still, and never tame.

We shared a bed when we were small,
built kingdoms out of pillow forts.
You held my hand in quiet dark,
and we survived in whispered sorts.

But life came fast, and you let go—
chose smoke and speed, the chase,

Swirling, twirling
Crisp and white,
It’s a snowflake
Kind of night…

Crystals shimmer
By moonlight,
Building castles
Till daylight…

Sandcastle Dreams

We built our kingdom of sand and dreams
A fortress of shells and seaweed streams
We dug our moat with buckets and spades
And prayed the tide would not invade

Our walls were high our towers tall
But storms came and watched them fall
The sea devoured our sandy home
Leaving us stranded feeling alone

Gone are the days of carefree play

Blue Marker Castles

I’ve always had the sneaking suspicion I’d never grow old.
I mean, when I was younger, I scribbled plans in a notebook.
Drew clumsy castles with blue marker and proclaimed loudly 
that I’d own one one day.
But when you’re a kid, “old”’s just around your twenties,
miles away from that wooden gym floor and your friends
sitting criss-cross applesauce

In the old days
castles were built from sturdy solid rock 
with arrow loops for arrow protection  
and curvilinear structures irregular to the eye.  
They were built with survival in mind 
appearing uniform grey from a distance 
but up close like a monument of  
mosaic  humble rocks.
