Under the Stars

The cobalt sky has many eyes;
they're brightest just before sunrise
as starlight.

Sprinkled amidst the indigo
we stop to let the sandman sow
his stardust.

Glittering `cross the peaceful night
we view a shooting star take flight;
we're starstruck.

The sky becomes a starlit show
as sea reflects its silver glow,
so starbright.

In awe we kiss and say goodnight.
I watch as you walk from my sight,
soft . . . starlit.

When the Sandman’s near
I can almost hear
his soft footsteps breaking ground.
With his tender touch
my eyes feel so much
as he sprinkles sand around.

I don’t want to sleep
but I want to keep
all the dreams he has for me.
So I welcome sand
from his gentle hand
and I drift off peacefully.

How

nice are

Etherees.

You simply add

a syllable to

each new line you write till

you finish with line ten. . . or

start with ten syllables, ending

with one. Rhyme them or not, but meter

gives flow, so . . . take up your pen now and GO!

12/15/15 by Andrea Dietrich for the Poetry Writing #1, sponsor, Broken Wings

I choose to show an Etheree poem because it is such a fun and easy one for us to write. I even explained how to do it inside the poem itself. This 10-line form was created by American poet, Etheree Taylor Armstrong of Arkansas. It should focus on one theme and was actually created as a form that does not worry about meter or rhyme. However, I enjoy using meter to give flow and rhyme to add interest. A side note: the syllable count of the total poem adds up to 55. I was born in '55, and 5 is my lucky number and my life Path number in numerology, so that is another reason I adore this form!!

I also have examples of the etheree form shown at Shadowpoetry.com along with example by Marie Summer with very clear definition of the form and its other variations. Here is the link:

Premium Member Summer Solstice - Alouette

Watch the sun appear
On this Solstice clear
Over Stonehenge monoliths.
Sing the sacred song
Honoring the throng
Of the ancient spirit’s gifts.

Let the sun stand still
As we feel the thrill
Of Midsummer’s energy.
Summer has begun
Now our hearts are one
As we mark in harmony

Power of the sun
That our Solstice's spun,
We gather to celebrate.
Let us be aware
Of the love we share
Where still Druids congregate.

The Solstice is a time when the Sun is at the highest (Summer) and the lowest (Winter) yearly altitude as measured from the equator in the Northern Hemisphere. The word “solstice” comes from two Latin words—“sol” (Sun) and “sistere” (standstill) -- indicating that the Sun comes to a stop before reversing its direction. Along with the Spring and Fall Equinoxes, Solstices have been considered in many world’s traditions as the most spiritually powerful days in a calendar year. While it marks the astronomical beginning of Summer, in ancient traditions this time period was known as Midsummer and is celebrated throughout the world in very similar ways even today.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice occurs on the 21st of June, as the Sun leaves the astrological sign of Gemini and enters into Cancer. This longest day of the year is the day for celebrating the life-giving powers of the Sun, giving gratitude to the joys of life, love and manifesting dreams into reality.

Their love will grow

I Saw It In the Mirror a Loop Poem

The prompt for our group was "I saw it the mirror, I saw it in my face"

If eyes are windows to the soul I saw mine in the mirror
Mirrors don’t lie they are simply a reflection
Reflections bear witness to our personal reality
Reality is our truth desired or not it is there
There is no running from what hides in our soul
Souls are seen in the mirror and I saw mine in my face
Face what’s harbored in my soul…. this is my journey
Journey if you dare it is a centripetal force

Summer now is here.
Fireworks will appear.
All the towns put on a show
lighting up the skies,
as with widened eyes,
children watch with hearts aglow.

Grownups too will be
very happily
enjoying their kids' delight.
Before summer flees,
we make memories
watching skies ablaze at night!

To Find a Better Life

To Find a Better Life (puente)*

“I can’t read or write
but experience taught me
wrong from right”
were grandpa’s final words to Roberto
as he began his journey on the migrant trail

~to find a better life~

he’d suffer hunger, thirst
and blistered feet to
leave the mixteca world
of Chiapas to become
a stranger in a strange land.

*Puente is a recognized form of poetry I crafted in 2008. For more information about the form look in the ‘Invented Poetry Forms’ section at this link::

Paths We Choose Unfinished Wip

Don't ever
Lose sight
Today is where
To believe in yourself

Up before our dawn
You perceive the gray
Not realizing for what I long
And You asked me not to stay

Our life, it seems, has come to an impasse
I choose to love you forever
Resetting our shiny compass
Wishing each other the best

To our own endeavors

Forsaken Angel -Wip-

Lil white flakes falling to the ground,
Covering the dead roses all around.
Healing the wounds left by your knife,
Salvation for the poor, mourning girl's life.

Petals fall like dust from a forsaken angel's wings;
Beautiful like the song that my heart still brokenly sings.

She kneels beside an old gravestone,
Remembering the skies her heart had flown.
Now that heart lies broken,
As she cries over your love token.

Petals fall like dust from a forsaken angel's wings;
Beautiful like the song that my heart still brokenly sings.

Lil Sally

Voices in my head are babbling everything vicious.
I can't take it anymore, Life has been a tyrant to us for so many years.
Time to let loose and not let the super reign over us with his fears.
Yay, daddy! I wanna go to the park! I've never been there before!
Not a problem, my dear, we shall go to the park...
Huffing and puffing, Lil Sally hears her very first victim.
Who be the unlucky fella, we're gonna call him Tim.
Sadly, he ain't got a clue what's coming at him.
I plunged Lil Sally right through the side of his sternum.
Daddy, daddy!
Hearing his screams makes my atoms jump like rabbits!
Looking at the gushing blood makes my mind go rabid!
Feeling his blood splatter makes my heartbeat rapid!
Smelling the fragrance of his blood makes me wanna taste it!
Tasting his adolescent blood makes my stomach lust for more of it!
My sweet little boy, don't resist your beautiful death, embrace it!
Your mummy and daddy would've loved to see how magnificent it is!
One stab, two stabs, three stabs, blast it, I'm just gonna slice and dice you in half!
Look at my fine cutting, just like my daddy, a transcending psychopath!
Oh sharp little baby, won’t you take a breather for a minute?
No, daddy, I want to savor every delicious droplet!
Alright baby, enough talking, how bout I grab you that bloodthirsty shiny goblet?

Notes
This verse (adapted from one of my WIP rap) is made as an outlet for me to vent my frustration so I'm sorry if it in anyway disgusts, offends or even scares you. But if you're interested, the poem is about a personified machete named Lil Sally and the wielder, or "Daddy", who is a psychopath that could no longer deal with life's problems and also considers Lil Sally to be his life companion, and their experience with their first cold-blooded murder of a young boy.

A Wink

Tell me truth today, I won't flinch.

I've noticed your smile with a wink;
Yes, your gesture made me to think;
Should I not take it as infringe?

I don't know, if I'm little slow.
Is it an emotional binge?
Can't stop to think, yet can't find link;

Tell me truth today, I won't flinch.

**********************************************************
Poetic Form :: Octain Refrain
It was invented by poet Luke Prater of Britain in 2010.

It comprises eight lines as two tercets and a couplet,
either as octosyllables (counting eight syllables per line),
or as iambic tetrameter, whichever is preferable.
Trochaic tetrameter also acceptable.
The latter yields a more propulsive rhythm, as opposed to iambs, which lilt.

As the name suggests, the first line is a refrain, repeated as the last
(some variation of refrain acceptable).
Rhyme-scheme as follows -

A-b-b
a-c/c-a
b-A

A = refrain line.
c/c refers to line five having midline (internal) rhyme (e.g. here/sneer),
which is different to the a- and b-rhymes.
The midline rhyme does not have to fall exactly in the middle of the line,
in fact it can be more effective and subtle, depending on context,
to have it fall earlier or later.

Alternative layout/stanza-structure:

Refrain lines out on their own, with the middle six as two tercets -

A
b-b-a
c/c-a-b
A

Alarmed

Ding
The dryer just went off
I swear the timer just said 10 more minutes
Time to put my happy face on
And leave for work

Don’t forget to brush your gums
With fluoride issued toothpaste and
Wipe your butt with bleached trees
Made in some Chinese factory

Time to exit your box shaped cage
Made from plaster and trees
Open the door of your dinosaur recycler
and

Ding, Ding, Ding
The car screams with the door open
Your already at work

I swear that drive was at least 20 minutes
But just as you open the door of the office factory
Your boss dressed in a black latex suite
Walks out with a wip and a latte

and he slaps your ass
And you smile and thank him
With your happy face on

Ding
Oh
Won’t you look at that
Is it lunch already?
I swear I had

Ding
Oh Dang
What a day
Time to stop pushing paper made from trees
And start getting ready for my trip home

Into my gas guzzler I go
Seat Belt made in China on
Happyface can come off
And the day can begin
I can’t wait to get home and stretch my toes and

Ding Dong
Pizza guys here

I forgot cash, how am I supposed to tip the pizza guy?

Ding Dong
One second
You yell
Ding

Dong in your hand
Your jacking off to some chick who’s body is
Shaped like an hourglass
By some guy with a massive cock
And you just wish your little rooster crowed like his did
But her Butt looks like a tomato and oh
OH

A slice of pizza drips onto the floor
DAMN
That sure felt

Ding.. Ding.. Ding..
It’s your 5:30 am alarm
You wake up, pants half down
Pizza sauce on your forehead
Dick smells like cheese

You throw your cum stained shirt into the washer
While you get yourself some coffee beans made in Argentina
and

Ding
Time for the dryer
As you sip on your black coffee
In the shower

Ding
The dryer just went off
I swear the timer just said 10 more minutes
Time to put my happy face on
And leave for work
