Best Shepherds Poems
Joseph
and Mary
traveled on a
donkey
to give birth
in Bethlehem,
but there
was no room
in the town's inn
In the
silence of
the starry night,
born in
a manger
the dear Savior
Angel
announces
to the shepherds:
"Today
nearby is
born a baby
God's son
the Savior,
Jesus the Lord
Angels
sing: "Glory
to God in the
highest,
peace to His
people on earth.
Shepherds
came to the
stable to pay
homage
to the new
Infant Jesus.
Magi
came adored
offered Him gifts

On a far away hill a glorious star shone so bright
As shepherds watched their flocks at night
An Angel of the Lord came down
And the glory of the Lord shone around
The Angel had no gold or diamond under his sleeve
Nor scented beautiful roses to give
He came to herald the gospel story
With many angels appearing in a heavenly glory
Gloria! Gloria!! The hosts of angels cry
We bring you good tidings of joy from on high
To you this day in the city of David a child is given
To crown the earth with joy and the love of heaven
When all hearts is filled
And the songs of Angels are stilled
When the star in the sky is gone
And Christmas begins at dawn
A voice was heard in the sky
A glorious voice was heard from on high
Shepherds heard a voice and found a Lamb
They found a savior, they found the I Am

Then the Shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. Luke 2:20

[Line one is an old schoolboy version of the first
Line of ‘While Shepherds’. I wrote the rest of verse
one based upon it, but was then astounded to
discover ‘my verse one’ word for word identical
online. As such, I must claim this poem as a
collaberation.]
While shepherds washed their socks by night
And hung them on the line
The Angel of the Lord came down
And said those socks are mine
Fear not he said though they be red
You washed them not with whites
Glad tidings of great joy I bring
They weren’t in with my tights
If you see David down this way
He’s bound to say this line
I’ll separate the colours, Lord
And things will turn out fine
O laundry maid did you not read
The instructions displayed
I must complain, look at this stain
Don’t think that you’ll be paid
My laundry sack produced forthwith
A purple, once-white thong
I also think that thong has shrunk
Can’t get the damned thing on
O God my thong it sure is high
How it hurt my cod-piece
Good grief I can’t wear it again
It slips right up my crease

Lyric
A Shepherd tends to his sheep
watching over them to protect
His desire is to keep them all close
To see them all gather
from the call of His voice
He shall provide and lead them to water
so they shall not thirst
He shall lead them to green pastures
for their hunger is satisfied
The Shepherd is love and comfort
but yet so few will return the love
and seek for his guidance and knowledge
for they do not understand how all have gone astray
For they might see a few green plants
begin to bloom and wander off from the Herd
in search of trying to eat on their own
maybe a mud puddle in view as they run
to drink it before the others take notice
These sheep grow more confident in providing for themself
and wander further as each day passes
seeking from their own wisdom
while pushing down a corrupt path
causing confusion to escape their winding maze
The Shepherd continues to call
for the ones which have got lost
He longs to see them come out from the wild
His mercy and love forgives them of where they have been
while making a new creation
so they shall love and teach of their escape
Many sheep shall hear His voice and know this is Him
listening carefully to be lead back Home
To be thankful He never quit calling
and the desire to feel the Love and Comfort once felt
To rejoice in living in His Herd

There is a common remedy for those who wish to sleep
They recommend to close your eyes and count imagined sheep
Just lie down and think of them lined up in single file
And count them bouncing one by one over a farmer's stile.
Sheep are very docile many hopeful sleepers find
And easily controlled by a less than wakeful mind
But yet there is a number who find the task a toll
Which does not help them sleep at all, because they lose control.
Their sheep are unco-operative: they do not jump on cue
They're likely to do other things that sheep just should not do
They play leap-frog and some hang-glide or tunnel underground
Or make the counting difficult by shuffling around.
So, many lie awake at night and hear the ticking clock
Counting down the hours as they struggle with their flock
All alone they battle long through till the morning's light
The sad and unsuccessful sleepless shepherds of the night.
Barely awake they suffer by the sleepless light of day
By night they try to slumber while their sheep cavort and play
Their woollen nerves warped, wefted, on fragile mental looms
They alternate sleep therapy with doctor’s waiting rooms.
So, if you are the fortunate and get your eight hours sleep
Be grateful for your fortune and your well disported sheep
And give a thought for others, who are not so kindly blessed
Whose sheep are so unruly and whose sleep is so distressed.

The manger was empty and bare.
But that didn’t matter,
because Love would come there.
Joseph and Mary found it sufficient,
she being full with God’s own son.
Thus in that night came Love omniscient.
An angel told shepherds of the birth.
They journeyed in joy to the place
and saw that Love had come to earth.
Wise men came led by a star’s holy light.
They brought gifts, worshipped the babe,
and knew that Love was in their sight.
Thus the prophecies of centuries long past
were fulfilled in some stranger’s manger,
and Love. . .Love came to earth at last.

Christmas
Christmas comes in long nights of winter
Honoring a child born so long ago
Restoring hope for peace on earth
In angel’s songs and shepherds bowed low
Sleeping child upon the hay
Taking Bethlehem by surprise
Magi from afar revere the new king
A humble child born before our eyes
Simple rhyme celebrates all that we treasure when days grow long with winter weather.

Acrostic
There was a glorious star, shining,
Bright in the heavens, piercing.
It lit up the night sky, like lightning,
Showing upon a village sight, conceiving.
All was calm, even the bustle from that great day,
For travelers who sought out their homeland pilgrimage,
Were worn out from their travels, of so far away.
Even a couple of Nazareth, looking for a place to stay.
Not far, and up on a hill where the sheep graze,
Was found a curiosity by these shepherds, with heads raised.
What a sight they did see in these midnight skies.
What did this mean, this holy light to their eyes?
Then came another light from above,
Growing brighter, filling all with peace and holy love.
At which occurrence commenced angelic singing,
Bringing the shepherds joy, as they began kneeling.
Over in this village, though not known to those around,
Was the source of this miracle, who made not a sound.
The birth of The King, the Savior of worlds renown,
Unto us in a lowly manger, the meekest circumstances around.
The lost would be found, and the beggar, not turned down.
Many of the pure worship him, as the One True King.
He brings exaltation to all who follow Him, earnestly.
His is the only way, He saves, and brings peace.
He is our exemplar, glorious, and most excellent reward!
Come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
He brings us eternal life by His side!
Alleluia, for coming down, on our saving night!

Free verse
Gone are those times, if ever such times were seen
When rustic shepherds shepherd their flock on nutritive green
Shepherds now lead their sheep to calamity and damnation
But today, the sheeps cry out for urgent and drastic redemption
Weary and tired in their age-long captivities
Now interested in their awakened sensitivities
To each other, they said, there's something we can do
This is our land, the land was here before us
With milk and honey it flows, its territories an oasis of safe haven
Calm was the land, then things began to happen
Our shepherds, our trust, our hearts has broken
And today, their leaky umbrellas we have broken
Falling from darkness to a place of uncertainty
Everything is moving with no recorded velocity
Crawling from the known to the unknown
The sheep sheepishly arrived at the unknown
The change, everything she's changing
No change is this, only a changeling
Hoping for a relief as time and tide passes
Alas! More darkness our territory encompasses
Hired shepherds, their sacred duties have abandoned
In vain hope their wickedness to us by us shall be pardoned
Shepherd umbrella and shepherd broom are just but alike
Our resort and determination to live in all they dislike
For decades something evil has been withholding us
At last we found out it was nothing but ourselves
Tell the lazy sheep, their laziness eschew
Death sentence, their dominance on us ensure
Let sentiment not guide our affairs as mortals
Common sense, our resort controls in total
For our woes, our sentiment endlessly compounds
In unison, our freedom, genuine minds propounds
Cease then that grief, and let those cards decide
If emotion rules us, be that emotion guide
If passion rules us, be that passion pride
If reason, then good reason our minds provide
Their piercing brooms, our flesh have broken
Shall tomorrow, at moon light by grace be broken

Political Verse
I know I am not perfect by any means
I know I have messed up immensely
I know I have strayed from your path
But you looked passed all that.
You accepted me the way I was.
Teaching me lessons and
Showing me love.
You are there when I am at a loss for words.
You give me the strength it takes to face my lions and push on.
You are the voice in my head saying don’t give up.
Don’t lose faith when times are tough.
Extend your hand in a time of need
Because everyone needs help back to their feet.
Sing my name and spread the truth
Because one day I will be back for you.

There is a picture in my mind
Of grazing sheep on a remote hillside
The shepherd is mindful of his flock
Guarding each of them with pride
His watchful eye then detects
One little lamb, - that strays away
Unaware of intimate danger
The consequence of being astray
He ventures into the underbrush
With a keen eye, and familiar voice
Only when it's safely back in the fold
Can He be content, and rejoice
Our Heavenly Father, gave a parable
To signify His ultimate love
How much more He cares for you
Than a sparrow, lamb or dove
The lamb knows the shepherds voice
There is a bond between the two
No stranger does it recognize
The Master's voice, is always true
Along our journey, wolves may howl
And threaten us throughout the night
The Shepard has promised us security
We are never, beyond His sight
