Best Safe Poems
Out of the burrows and hedges and dreys
Heads began bobbing and eyes were agaze.
Rumours were twittered and grunted and squealed:
‘The combine is coming to harvest the field!’
The moles and the voles and the rabbits and hares
All hurried and scurried and scattered in pairs.
The hedgehogs and ladybirds, pheasants and shrews
Did all that they could to distribute the news.
Then all made a dash for old wise badger’s sett;
The only safe refuge in face of the threat.
There, in the deep hollow they felt the vibration
They shivered and shuddered in great trepidation.
The thrumming and thundering monster machine
Soon passed overhead... and then all was serene.
And out of the hollow came heads, tails and paws
Another day safe from the harvester’s jaws!

I chose this poem because not only is it one of my personal favourites, but to this day, I've no idea where all these little creatures came from! Written early on in my poetic endeavours, it made me appreciate fully the amazing powers of the imagination!

Are your mind and heart open
Are you safe
For the weary and forsaken
Are you safe
Does empathy over prejudice prevail
Or do different perspectives tip your scale
For the weak and the mistaken
For the outcasts and the shaken
Are your mind and heart open
Are you safe
A ship is safe in the harbor,
But that's not what ships are built for.
Because in the sum of our human gleams,
We have created the vessel for our dreams.
Its purpose: to retrieve the alien shore,
To scout, seek, achieve and explore.
A ship is meant to fly and fly,
To seize the horizon and capture the sky.
And the few of us with the intrepidity,
To brave the virulent vortex velocity
We are the wealthiest of men ever to dream
And ever to combat a sea or a stream.
And the harbored ships that fritter away,
Slowly begin to rot and decay.
Never has there been a greater waste of a day,
Than that spent harbored,
Than those of us who stay.
He kept a small room
he wasn’t in it very often
but it was there and he knew it
it was safe
for though life had opened roads
that needed to be trodden
and he was often far away
his room was
waiting for him
in it was his bookcase
teal blue stained wood
shelves of a life explored
childhood memories
books about dinosaurs and the moon
pictures and piggy banks
old record albums and
his Titanic collection
there were two hickory chairs
old world charm in light pink brocade
a gift of decades past
and his library desk, a rare find
and one to keep for its
mahogany leather embossed top
its drawers crammed with 50 years of
incidentals, papers and letters
and brochures
on its walls, his oils and watercolors
kept guard
his paintings from a long ceased dalliance
in art
he kept a small room
to visit
for though he believed that home
is where love is and can be anywhere
he also knew that a seed planted
can grow and grow
but its roots must survive
The ship we have
known
is sailing again
It is sailing through
the ocean of pain
Through the sea
it sails
right on course
Soon it will reach
the islands
the islands of temptation
the isles of bliss
No storms there, no sorrow
Our rest is assured
Before we land
on the blessed
isle
We will taste the fruits
of the life
we have known
Yes, and we will dance
among the gardens
where we see
dawn rise once again
over the ocean and the verdant lands
"Somewhere Safe Little Ghost, in your Mirrors"
You asked me,
what happens when we go -
then what next?
I replied to you,
“God, only knows, little ghost”.
You asked me,
“When you visit, after you go -
how will I know you’re there?’
I replied to you,
“Look for me
in your mirrors,
the windows to inside
never lie, little ghost.”
You asked me, then,
“What if I’m scared?
Will you visit me then?”
I replied,
“You won’t be scared.
You’ll be looking for me in everything,
you’ll know me inside out, by then.
I'll always be with you, I'll always be there."

I hung up my cell phone two

Mary C. and I wanted to call
our mutual friend, Starshadow.

on three occasions the robot
interrupted my personal my

did not respond. They promised
to call me back within 42 or 48

Until tomorrow, feel safe in my warm embrace;
don't feel the rage of those frightening storms...
whisper a passionate wish--- a sentimental phrase.
Stars won't appear to delight, excite and appease;
and with gloominess and clouds to marr our days...
until tomorrow, feel safe in my warm embrace.
We are stupefied by the butterflies's frantic dance;
they swirl with joy, then slowly land on our shoulders...
whisper a passionate wish--- a sentimental phrase.
Shunning faith and obedience is to live without grace;
God has blessed us and given us true happiness...
whisper a passionate wish---a sentimental phrase.
And should unfaithfulness ever bring us disgrace,
let that thought quickly vanish into darkness;
until tomorrow, feel safe in my warm embrace...
whisper a passionate wish---a sentimental phrase.
In my thoughts there floats an island tranquil, warm
That is sometimes sunny, sometimes sweet with rain
Sound, the harbor that's my refuge thru each storm
Where my hopes, like flowers, bloom to ebb the pain
Through the darkest gloom, that shelter will transform
All my nightmares, grim, 'til naught but dreams remain
When I yearn to taste that breeze and count its sighs
I'll hoist each day's cares and gently ... close my eyes.

Never knew the space between time and you
Fractions divided, pulling us apart . . .
This wasn't my desire, this point of view
Distraction, less connection of the heart
Perhaps the plan exceeds our existence
With what happens next, the isolation
Pulling us apart, with only a glance -
Starving we are, for communication
Give me one plus one, I know equals two
I am kept safe in what’s logical . . .
Aching for the space between time and you,
Without a new norm, anything special
This wasn't my desire, this point of view
Give me one plus one, I know equals two

"I feel safe with you, totally.
No one makes me feel more secure than you do
whenever you are with me,
and so I submit myself to you willingly,
fully exposing to you all of my vulnerabilities,
knowing that you will never hurt me and always protect me.
It is only because of you and your loyalty to me
that makes me feel so tranquil, so complete.
You never let me go hungry, provide me with comfort I can't believe,
very rarely do you ever turn away my company,
and at those times when I see you helpless and weak,
I will assume your leadership responsability
and try to make you feel safe again, like you always did me,
I willingly give to you my undying loyalty,
because I always feel safe with you, whenever you are with me."
- The above is how animals think and why they do the things they do.
It's the equivalent of humans saying to one another, "I Love You."
I know my words are safe with you
They flow from my heart tried and true
I have nothing to fear
You will protect and not harm me
For my beauty is what you see
To my heart you are near
I’m free to expose how I feel
You cherish what you know is real
I flourish with your praise
I’m not careful of what I write
I know the truth you’ll bring to light
My thanks to you I raise.

I'm so sorry to leave you dear, hard to say good bye to one so new,
The nine months and few hours in my arms held, are far as I can go.
Your fireman guardian angel will protect and find a home for you.
I must let go tiny fingers born in pain of child birth as you withdrew,
And sure my brown eyed girl will find a family with love to grow.
I'm so sorry to leave you dear, hard to say good bye to one so new.
Away now I must go, from new born dappled in soft rosy hue,
I pray they will be kind and bring a joy I'll never know.
Your fireman guardian angel will protect and find a home for you.
The station door now lit, no longer hides my tears from view,
Though fragile life started off in painful plan only God could bestow.
I'm so sorry to leave you dear, hard to say good bye to one so new.
The days go by slowly in whispered memory of winds that coldly blew,
and sound of a child's cries, left bereft, a bitter pill to swallow.
Your fireman guardian angel will protect and find a home for you.
I saw you once again on TV with your loving parents who adopted two.
So wonderful they call you Naomi, though loss seemed only a moment ago.
I'm so sorry to leave you dear, hard to say good bye to one so new,
Your fireman guardian angel will protect and find a home for you.
I wander the night
Afraid to stand still
Home is not safe
The air holds a chill
My eyes flit around
Darting like mice
Watching wearily
My hands feel like ice
I shiver and chitter
From more than just cold
My feet shuffle slowly
Fear barely controlled
I finally reach it
A place that’s secure
Cold, dark and uncomfortable
But I will endure
Played The Safe Notes In My Lone Retreat
That fear was always darkness in disguise
A high cliff, a frail rope and my hanging.
Inspired hope not enough, word to the wise
Fear is darkness and roaring loud banging.
I played the safe notes in my lone retreat
Seeking warm meals to soothe my tepid soul.
Just barely enough sweet dessert to eat,
With that coward's safety as my main goal!
That fear was always darkness in disguise
My life was safe in it being so wild.
Living just one lousy day the grand prize
Safe comfort sadly sought like a small child!
Pray tell? Why show this discovery now?
Fear now defeated but I know not how.

young man and wanting the world to kill me.
I fought it every damn day, fought people too.
Yet fate said no, you'll not get your wish to die young.
You will grow old and face that reality as well..
